River Royale (built 2006, last refurbished in 2014) is one of the Uniworld ships in France – together with River Baroness and the “Super Ship” SS Catherine. Uniworld France river cruise boats, just like the rest in the fleet, are referred to as “boutique ships”. Each of them is well-known for the decadent-style decorations, museum-quality original artworks and classy furniture. The shipowner Uniworld operates some of the best luxury river cruise ships in France with all-inclusive deals and impeccable service. River Royale cabins review

Follows review of River Royale staterooms as furniture, price-included amenities and complimentary services:

All River Royale cabins feature boutique decor and decadent-style, high-quality furniture. Each of the passenger accommodations has 2 twin beds /convertible to queen, with bedside tables and lamps. The signature Savoir beds are handcrafted, with under-bed suitcase storage space, luxury bedding sets (100% Egyptian cotton), duvets, pillow menu. The list of included amenities in all cabins includes: en-suite marble bathroom (WC, sink, shower cubicle, towel warmer, waffle bathrobes, plush towels, slippers), bottled water (replenished daily), magnifying mirror, luxury bath products, L’Occitane body products (/shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, body lotion), 2-3 built-in closets, flat HDTV (with infotainment system, satellite reception, movies-on-demand, “View From the Bridge” /real time webcam views), desk, table, chairs, safe, hairdryer, individual climate control (thermostat), 110 / 220 V power outlets.

The only Suite (cabin #326 on La Gironde Deck) features a French balcony (opening window by the sleeping area), floor-ceiling window (by the lounge/sitting area), two bathrooms (one WC/sink, one with 2 sinks and shower /no bathtub). The bed is  /with fixed queen (not convertible to 2 twins).

River Royale cabins in categories C1, C2 and C3 are same as size and furniture. The only difference is the French Balcony in Category 1 rooms (an opening floor-ceiling window /electronically controlled).

Categories C2 and C3 are non-opening window staterooms. Category 2 rooms on Bordeaux Deck 2 are with full-Picture Window. Category 3 rooms on the boat’s lowest deck (Durance) are with water-level location. Each of them has two Porthole Windows positioned high-up on the riverside wall.

River Royale cruise ship deck plan has a total of 65 staterooms for 130 passengers served by 41 crew/staff.

Uniworld ship Royale features 4 passenger decks, 1 restaurant, 2 lounges with bars, spacious sun deck (shaded-seating, Cafe, passenger-use bikes, deck games, whirlpool), Gym, Spa, Sauna, self-service laundry facility, 1 elevator (connecting decks 2 and 3 only).

River Royale Deck 1 Plan – La Durance

All staff and crew cabins, along with the crew lounge/dining facility are located after the midship passenger staterooms. Aft are located the boat’s propulsion room, fuel tanks, sewage-treatment plant.

All service and storage spaces are forward, including the ship’s fresh-water storage and ballast-water tanks.

La Durance Deck cruise cabins from 101 to 109, all of which are Picture Window staterooms in category 3 “Deluxe Outside Double” (with water-level location and 2 non-opening windows).

River Royale Deck 2 Plan – Bordeaux

Elevator (level 1 of 2)

Le Bordelais Restaurant is the ship’s single-seating capacity dining room with classic European and also regional cuisine specialties. The food is high-quality, with locally sourced ingredients. Bordelais Restaurant is waiter-served, and operates with preset dining times depending on the daily scheduled port activities. Breakfast (7-9 am) is buffet-style (large station is located in the center) with cereals, selection of breads, pastries, cheeses, cold meats, fruits, yogurt, smoothies, sausage. There is a designated chef for made-to-order eggs, omelets and other dishes ordered separately (at no extra charge). Lunch (12:30 – 2 pm) is usually waiter-served (excepting days with scheduled port excursions that require time changes). Lunch menu options include soups, carvery, salads bar, hot dishes, pasta and sandwiches, desserts, with local delicacies also provided (like sausages and wiener schnitzel). Dinners (7-7:30 pm /starting after after the Main Lounge’s cocktail hour) are waiter-served (until 9pm). The 4-course dinner menu has several starters, 2 soups, 3 entrees (fish, meat, vegetarian), desserts, cheese plates. At dinner, the complimentary wines are itinerary-based (reflecting the sailing region), and steaks and chicken are always offered on request. At breakfast and lunch, a la carte menu is also provided.

The dining room also hosts the Royale ship’s formal events (including the Captain’s Welcome / Farewell dinners).

Reception Desk provides 24-hour guest services (assistance, information, Sauna/Spa reservations, Claret Room dinner reservations, purser services).

Travel Desk (Uniworld Royale’s Cruise Director office) provides information on the daily-schedule program (onboard/port activities). It also serves the Uniworld line’s tours/excursions booking and future cruise booking programs.

During the ship’s 2014 refurbishment, the Boutique and the Patio Lounge (Internet Cafe) here were replaced by, respectively, “Blues Cafe” and “Claret Room”.

Claret Room is a wine bar and a specialty dinner venue (complimentary, capacity 12 seats, with sommelier service) used for local food and wine tastings. All the food and wines served here are complimentary (45-min long, reservations required) and offered 3 times throughout the voyage. They feature fine wines from a local winery, plus a selection of local (charcuterie food) specialties and cheeses.

Blues Cafe is a specialty coffee and tea bar. The Cafe has a station with coffee machine and water dispenser. Prior to going on excursions/tours, guests can fill up here their water flasks (supplied in all passenger cabins).

In the rear is located the boat’s Engine Room.

Bordeaux Deck cruise cabins from 202 to 231, all of which are non-opening window staterooms in categories C3 (smaller window) and C2 (with 1 Picture Window).

River Royale Deck 3 Plan – La Gironde

Salon Gascogne is the boat’s Main Lounge & Bar. This is an indoor observation and show lounge with dance floor, full-service bar (named Aquitaine Bar) and stage for the live evening entertainment. In the evenings, here are offered live music performances by resident duo (pianist/singer) and by local guests (post-dinner show). During the day, Salon Gascogne hosts the Uniworld Cruises’ enrichment program, which includes cooking demonstrations and guests lectures (themed food and wine, art and music, culture, architecture, etc). A traditional pre-dinner event here is the Cruise Director’s talks. They offer information and tips about the next-day scheduled Uniworld excursions (complimentary) and optional tours (cost extra) ashore.

From the terrace outside the Gasgogne Lounge, there is a staircase access to the Sun Deck’s forward section. In the Lounge there is a 24-hour station for complimentary specialty coffee/tea (with cookies and candies).

Boutique Shop (relocated to the Gascogne Lounge in 2014) sells special occasion gifts, luxury jewelry and watches, Uniworld logo merchandise, itinerary-based souvenirs.

In the boat’s rear section is located the Wellness Center, consisting of Fitness Center, Spa (massage room) and Sauna Room.

Serenity River Spa (massage room /at fee) has panoramic windows (portside views) and is serviced by a professional masseur.

Fitness Center is the aft-located semicircular gym room with large panoramic windows. It is equipped with exercise bikes, 1 rowing machine, 1 treadmill, free weights, fitball, yoga mats.

Laundry Room is a self-service facility with a washing machine (detergent is supplied), dryer and ironing board (no dry-cleaning).

La Gironde Deck cruise cabins from 301 to 329, all of which are French balcony staterooms in categories C1, plus the boat’s only one S-Suite (cabin #326 /aft-starboard, with fixed queen bed).

River Royale Deck 4 Plan – Solei/Sun

Navigation Bridge (called “Wheelhouse” on river cruise ships) is passenger accessible and telescopic (can be lowered for passing under low bridges). By the Bridge there is a station with bicycles and Nordic walking sticks for passengers, offered complimentary on all Uniworld tours and excursions ashore (including on individually organized tours). All bicycles have locks, helmets are provided on request.

Sun Deck is a spacious outdoor relaxation and sunbathing area with shaded seating (two retractable awnings), padded chaise loungers and tables with chairs. The sundeck is the ship’s smoking area, and the best vantage point to enjoy the unobstructed countryside views along the River Royale itinerary route. Weather permitting, in the mornings here are held complimentary exercise classes (including Zumba, Yoga, Aerobics).

Blue Fox Cafe (added during 2014 refurbishment) is a multipurpose lounge, designed as a conservatory. It is glass-enclosed (with retractable roof and glass walls), with live plants for decoration and 14 tables (capacity 2-2-6 seats) Depending on the weather, the whole structure can be opened or closed. The Blue Fox Cafe doubles as an alternative dining venue with waiter service and light lunch menu (pizzas, pasta, burgers, seafood, salads, soups, sandwiches). After dinner, here are served drinks from the Aquitaine Bar. Twice per River Royale cruise, here is offered themed dinner menu with classic French cuisine dishes (complimentary). The al-fresco cafe also has an outdoor seating area (around the structure) furnished with ironwork tables.

With mid-ship location is the Deck Games area – with Giant Chess and shuffleboard.

In the rear there is a sunbathing area with a Jacuzzi (whirlpool bath) and 10 sunloungers with cushions.
