ms Columbus (built 1988 as “FairMajesty”, last refurbished in 2017) as MV Pacific Pearl was the smallest and oldest among the P and O Australia ships. The vessel was previously operated also by Princess Cruises as Star Princess (between 1989 and 1997, link to the 2001-built ship). In February 2016 was officially announced that the vessel leaves PandO Australia in 2017 to join the fleet of CMV (Cruise And Maritime Voyages) under the name “MV Columbus”. Columbus cruise ship rooms

Of all Columbus cabins, only 64 (8%) are with a private balcony. Of those, 28 are De Luxe Balcony rooms and 36 are Junior Suites The ship offers a variety of well-appointed inside and outside staterooms. The number of single cabins is 150. Wheelchair accessible are 6 cabins (located on decks 8 and 9). Interconnecting are 16 staterooms. Cruise accommodation are graded according to their deck position and sizes. Follows the review of ms Columbus staterooms as furniture, amenities and complimentary services:

Each of the Columbus cruise ship cabins has en-suite bathroom (shower, single-sink vanity, WC, hairdryer, bathrobes, bath products), sleeping area (twin bed or 2 twins /some convertible to double), living area, wardrobe (ample drawer-hanging-storage space), mirrored vanity/dressing table, direct-dial phone, safe, mini-bar / fridge), individual air-conditioning, flat TV (news and movie channels, plus CMV ship info channel for shore excursions/tours lectures, port talks, schedule events, cruise director announcements, etc). Some rooms are equipped with additional beds for 3rd/4th passenger.

Guarantee Inside cabins (category IG, location on Reception Deck 5) are rooms with allocated numbers at ticketing stage. Cabin location can’t be requested. Most IG rooms are likely to be interior (without a window).

Guarantee Outside cabins (category OG, location on Columbus Deck 8) are rooms with allocated numbers at ticketing stage (usually 3 weeks before departure). OG rooms are with either porthole or picture window.

Standard Twin Inner (category 1) are with Reception Deck 5 location.

Standard Plus Twin Inner (category 2) are with Main Deck 6 location.

Standard Twin Oceanview – Obstructed (categories 6B-Boat Deck and 6C-Columbus Deck) are with midship location. All these rooms are with partially or fully obstructed windows, but offer easy access to the ship’s restaurant and lounges.

Standard Twin Porthole (category 6P) are all located on Pacific Deck 4. Each room has a porthole window.

Standard Twin Oceanview (categories 6-Reception Deck 5 and 7-Main Deck 6) are with a picture window.

Standard Plus Twin Oceanview (category 8) are located on Columbus Deck 8 and Boat Deck 9. Twelve of those are connecting cabins. Numbers 8101-8102-8118-8119-9136-9137 are wheel-chair accessible cabins. They are all equipped for passengers with mobility limitations plus their travel companions.

Superior Twin Oceanview (category 9) are with Upper Deck 10 location and have picture windows. Rooms 10302 and 10307 are with obstructed views.

Superior Plus Twin Oceanview (category 11) are with Upper Deck 10 (midship) location.

Premium Twin Oceanview (category 12) are with Navigator Deck 11 location (highest cabin deck). Such a position offers great sea and port views along the Columbus cruise itinerary route, as well as easy access to swimming pools, outdoor deck areas and the Plantation Bistro.

De Luxe Balcony Oceanview (category DL) are 28 rooms in total, all with Navigator Deck 11 location. Each of the balcony staterooms features a private veranda with lounge furniture (1 table, 2 chairs).

Junior Balcony Suite Oceanview (category JA) are also on Navigator Deck 11. These Mini Suites additionally have larger sitting area, private veranda, double bed (convertible to twins), sofa bed (for 3rd and/or 4th passenger). Their bathrooms are larger and with bathtubs.

Single cruise cabins

MV Columbus single cabins are 150 and can be booked with single occupancy rates (no single supplement required). All single-occupancy rooms are equipped with single beds and have en-suite bathrooms.

Standard Plus Single Inner (category 2S / on Columbus Deck 8) is sized 150 ft 2 / 15 m2. Rooms 8103-8104-8107-8108-8111-8112 are with twin beds (convertible to double). All other 2S-Standard Plus Single cabins are with a single bed plus sofa bed and Pullman bed.

Superior Single inner (category 3S / on Upper Deck 10) is sized 190 ft2 / 17,5 m2. Most rooms are with twin beds convertible to double.

Standard Single Oceanview-Obstructed (category 6BS / on Boat Deck 9) is sized 145 ft2 / 13,5 m2. All single outside rooms are with partially or fully obstructed windows.

Standard Single Oceanview (category 7S / on Main Deck 6) is sized 190 ft2 / 17,5 m2. Each of these rooms has a picture window.

CMV Columbus Deck Plans Review

CMV Columbus cruise ship deck plan has a total of 775 staterooms for 1546 passengers (max capacity is 1855 guests) served by 700 crew/staff, 11 passenger decks (out of 13) with 4 restaurants, 8 bars, 2 swimming pools, 2 jacuzzies, 12 elevators.

On board, self-service launderettes (passenger use laundry/ironing facilities) are located on decks: 6-Main and 10-Upper. Laundry services on board are not complimentary /included in the fares. Smoking on the CMV Columbus ship is permitted only at designated outdoor public areas.

Columbus Deck 2 Plan – Caribbean / Spa

The Spa Deck layout has the ship’s Wellness Centre (accessible via 3 passenger lifts and by stairs from the Atrium). The complex includes the following facilities:

Thermal Suite (Sauna, Steam Rooms)

“Aqua HealthSpaFitness” (Massage Rooms, refexology, acupuncture, facials, scrubs, couples massage room /with shower and 1 whirlpool)

The 2-leveled Gym has modern equipment (no panoramic windows), a separate room for classes at surcharge. It provides personal trainers for Fitness, Pilates and Yoga classes.

Beauty Salon (hair cutting, styling, coloring, manicure, pedicure, waxing, teeth-whitening, botox, barber services).

Columbus Deck 4 Plan – Pacific

Fiesta Deck layout has the ship’s Medical Centre and 20 staterooms. Deck 4 is accessible via 6 passenger lifts and by stairs.

Along with public restrooms, here are the portside-location cruise cabins from 4102 to 4140, all of which are category HH oceanview staterooms (each of them has a Porthole window).

Columbus Deck 5 Plan – Reception / lobby

Plaza Deck layout has cruise cabins from 5101 to 5217, of which Oceanvew rooms (categories G/forward and GG/mid-ship) and Inside (categories N, O and P /forward).

Next is the Columbus’s Atrium – a 3-decks high open-floor design area. Here are located the ship’s Reception Desk (guest services, assistance, information), Shore Tours Office (shore excursions booking and information on CMV cruise tours) and “Onboard Cruise Sales” office (discount booking of CMV Columbus cruise deals while on the ship). The Atrium’s Lobby level is served by the Hemmingway’s Bar (portside lobby bar serving the foyer).

“Essentials” is a convenience store (selling lotions, toiletries, etc).

The Taverner’s Pub & Casino has a limited seating, offers off-shore gambling on roulette/blackjack tables and poker machines, and complimentary casino gaming lessons for beginners.

Columbus Deck 6 Plan – Main

Main Deck layout has cruise cabins from 6101 to 6239, of which Oceanvew rooms (categories F/forward and FF/mid-ship) and category M-Inside.

Part of the Atrium’s level 2 is one of the ships all three “Tax & Duty Free Shops” / Shopping Galleria (this one is with portside location). These shops sell liquor, tabaccos, brand cosmetics, perfumes, fashion clothes and accessories, luxury jewelry and watches at duty-free prices (up to 40% off their retail prices). Check the “Pacific Daily” onboard newsletter for special shopping offers and promotions.

PANDORA shop (luxury jewelry boutique) opens after the scheduled refurbishment in 2015.

Also part of this Atrium level is the “Raffles” bar serving specialty cocktails.

Deck 6 has a self-service launderette.

Columbus Deck 7 Plan – Promenade

Promenade Deck layout starts with “The Palladium Show Lounge” – 2-decks high theatre hosting large-scale show productions in the evenings with live music, magic and comedy performances by guest entertainers. The daily program here has Jackpot bingo games and trivia quizzes. The Palladium Bar serves the theatre and the foyer area.

The other two of all three “Tax & Duty Free Shops” are here (located portside and starboard).

With starboard and portside location are the “Photo & Video Gallery” areas, with the “Expressions Studio” for professional video-photo services).

“Tech Store” sells duty-free photo/video equipment and accessories.

The “Connexions Bar” serves the two open-air Promenade deck areas.

“Captain’s Club” is an English pub bar with a nice selection of local and international beers.

The ship’s “Art Gallery” displays art items (also available for purchasing). The gallery is the venue hosting the onboard art auctions.

The “Waterfront Restaurant” the dining room which operates with open-seating and a la carte menus (“Your Choice Dining”) for breakfast and lunch, and offers 4-course dinner menu. Tables seats from 2 to 10 guests. Dining Room times vary (sea / port days): Breakfast (7:30-9:30 / 7-9am), Lunch (12-2pm), Dinner (5:30-9:30pm).

Part of Waterfront Restaurant is the “Wine Room”. It serves the CMV line’s “Chef’s Table” dinner package. The “Chef’s Table” is a gourmet private dining package for up to 14 guests (surcharge PP apply, reservations required), inclusive of cocktail reception, canapes by the Columbus ship’s Executive Chef, and a tour of the galley.

Columbus Deck 8 Plan – Columbus

Columbus Deck layout starts with “The Marquee” theatre (balcony level 2).

“The Internet Cafe” has a limited seating and several Internet computers (charges per minute apply, Internet packages start from 100 mins)

Cruise cabins from 8101 to 8185, of which Oceanvew rooms (categories E and EE, and the obstructed view grades I and H) and Inside cabins (categories M/forward and the smaller in size TT/mid-ship location).

The reason for the obstructed views in the mid-ship outside staterooms are the ship’s all 14 service boats (of which 8 lifeboats, 4 tenders, and 2 rescue boats)

“The Oasis” retreat, served by Oasis Bar (aft-location, lower level 1 of 3) is an adults-only outdoor relaxation area with premium sun loungers, couches and deck chairs. It has for decoration fake plants, 2 hot tubs (on lower level), and a bar serving drinks.

Columbus Deck 9 Plan – Boat

Boat Deck layout has mostly cruise cabins (numbers from 9101 to 9177), of which Oceanvew rooms categories E and EE, and with partially obstructed view are the staterooms in grades II and H.

With aft location is the level 2 of 3 of “The Oasis” adult-only deck areas.

Columbus Deck 10 Plan – Upper

Upper Deck layout has cruise cabins from 10100 to 10307, of which Oceanvew rooms (categories D and DD/mid-ship) and category L-Inside.

Aft is the upper level 3 of 3 of “The Oasis” open-air retreat complex.

On deck 10 there is a self-service launderette (forward location).

Columbus Deck 11 Plan – Navigator

Navigator Deck layout has cruise cabins from 11084 to 11195 of which Mini Suites (category AB), Balcony rooms (category BA), Oceanvew (category C) and category K-Inside.

In the ship’s aft section are the children’s club lounges, plus a netted outdoor playing area plus an open-air deck area with a paddling pool.

The “Trumps & Aces” club (kids 3-6 yo, must be toilet-trained) has toys, educational games and kids fun activities supervised by certified staff. In the “Trumps & Aces” there is a Nursery Room where babysitting service is available between 10:30pm-1am (charges apply). The list of activities here includes arts/crafts, music, cartoons, parties, “Sleepyheads Storytime” (story telling).

The “Crafters Studio” club (kids 7-10 yo) offers as activities arts-crafts, movies, scavenger hunts, pirate games, iPad learning, PS and Nintendo gaming consoles, themed parties, air hockey, table tennis, sport tournaments, karaoke, talent shows, kids-only dinners held in the Plantation Restaurant.

Columbus Deck 12 Plan – Lido / Pool

The fore-located Navigation Bridge and the adjacent Captain’s Suite and officers quarters are inaccessible for passengers.

“Salt Grill” (portside) is a specialty restaurant (surcharges PP) run by celebrity chef Luke Mangan (reservations-only, closed on port days).

“The Cafe” bar (starboard) serves the pool area with light snacks and drinks.

The Columbus ship’s pool area has 2 large swimming pools (the forward one is adults-only). The area is served by the Splash Bar (swim-up bar), “The Grill” (complimentary fast food choices with AU BBQ fare /charges apply at dinner, after 5pm) and an Ice Cream Bar (charges apply; offers “New Zealand Natural” ice cream, including the CMV’s “Choc Hokey Pokey” flavour). In the evenings, here are organized open-air deck parties.

At the “Aqua Hut” guests can hire snorkeling equipment for shore tours, or to purchase “Tabata” high quality snorkel equipment.

The “Plantation Restaurant” is the lido buffet restaurant. Dining times here vary (sea / port days): breakfast (6:30-11am / 6-11am), lunch (11:30am-2:30pm / 11:30am-3pm), and dinner (5-9pm).

The “Luna” room is an Asian-cusine specialty restaurant annex (cover charges PP aplly). Luna’s menu features Japanese and Thai food specialties.

The Plantation Restaurant has an outdoor terrace served by the Plantation Bar.

Columbus Deck 14 Plan – Sun / teens

Sun Deck’s layout starts with “The Dome” – an indoor observation lounge during the day, covered with glass roof. This lounge has ample seating, large dance floor, a full service bar and floor-ceiling panoramic windows for 180°port and ocean views. Late in the evenings (after 10:30pm), The Dome becomes a disco nightclub.

The “V8 Simulators” room has high-speed car racing simulators, with a collection of some of the world’s most famous car racing circuits (charges per session apply).

There is a Walking/Jogging Track and Deck Games: area (quoits, giant chess board, golf putting green, shuffleboard).

The ship’s “Big Screen” is a large-size outdoor LED screen for movies, live sports games (including NRL/AFL) and show programs. There is a stage for live music and show performances, including the “Pacific Cirque” show.

Located aft are the other two of all four teen-kids lounges by the Cruise Maritime’s youth programme. The “HQ” club is for kids 11-14 yo, and the “HQ+” club is for teenagers (14-17 yo). These venues offer as activities film making, dancing classes, teen discos and “jams” (teenagers can form a music band for live performances), contests, sports competitions, talent shows, movies, Karaoke, Nintendo/PS console games, themed parties.

The Sun Deck also has outdoor sporting equipment for unique open-air activities, such as bow-ladder- and funnel climbing, trampoline jumping, net racing, Bouncing Bridge, racing through the ship, and even flying on ropes around the Atrium area.
