ms Magellan (built 1985 as “MS Holiday”, last refurbished in 2015) was one of the first Carnival Cruise Lines ships. The vessel was operated by Carnival between 1985-2009. In the period 2010-2014 the ship was renamed “MS Grand Holiday” and transferred to the Carnival Corporation’s subsidiary Ibero Cruceros (Spain). In November 2014 was officially announced that the vessel will join the fleet of CMV (Cruise And Maritime Voyages) under the name “MS Magellan” (starting operations in March 2015). Of all Magellan cabins, only 14 (the suites) are with a private balcony. The ship offers a variety of well-appointed inside and outside staterooms. The number of single cabins is only 2 (both located on Baltic-Reception deck 5). Wheelchair accessible are 21 cabins (located on decks 5, 6 and 11). Cruise accommodation are graded according to their deck position and sizes. The number of cabin categories is 18.

Follows the review of ms Magellan staterooms as furniture, amenities and complimentary services:

Each of the Magellan cruise ship cabins has en-suite bathroom (shower cubicle with plastic curtain, single-sink vanity, WC, hairdryer, bathrobes), sleeping area (twin bed or 2 twins /some convertible to double, bedside tables, Stilform mattresses), living area, wardrobe (ample drawer-hanging-storage space), mirrored vanity/dressing table with a chair, direct-dial phone, safe, mini-bar / fridge), individual air-conditioning (no thermostat, only a twist knob for controlling the cool air flow), flat TV (news and movie channels, plus CMV ship info channel for shore excursions/tours lectures, port talks, schedule events, cruise director announcements, etc), wall lighting, nightly turndown service. Some rooms are equipped with additional Pullman beds for 3rd/4th passenger. Most lower beds are L-shaped configuration. Toiletries (unbranded bath products) are regularly replenished and include shower gel / shampoo (wall-mounted) and two soap bars.

Guarantee Inside cabins (category IG, location on Baltic Deck 5 and Atlantic Deck 6) are rooms with allocated numbers at ticketing stage. Cabin location can’t be requested. Most IG rooms are likely to be interior (without a window).

Standard Twin Inner (category 1) are with Caribbean Deck 4 location.

Standard Plus Twin Inner (category 2) are with Baltic Deck 5 location.

Superior Twin Inner (category 3) are with Atlantic Deck 6 location.

All the Magellan ship’s suite accommodations are located forward on Navigator Deck 11. The cluster includes six RS-Royal Suites, four DL-Deluxe Suites and four JS-Junior Suites. These are the ship’s balcony cabins, each featuring a private veranda with lounge furniture (1 table, 2 chairs). Suites additionally have a larger, well-furnished sitting area, private veranda, fixed queen bed (convertible to twins), two TVs, DVD player, tea-coffee maker, walk-in closet, sofa bed (for 3rd and/or 4th passenger), larger bathroom (shower / bathtub, enhanced bath amenities). The list of suite-only bonus amenities includes bathrobes, slippers, daily replenished fresh fruits and flowers, complimentary umbrella, world atlas, tote bag, daily newspaper (based on itinerary / ports of call), welcome gifts (bottle of Champagne, bottled water, chocolates on the pillow), priority services (embarkation, disembarkation, tendering). The list of complimentary services includes laundry (throughout the voyage), DVD hire, in-cabin dining (breakfast service, pre-dinner hors d’ouevres), restaurant dining reservations (upon request), shore excursion reservations.

All De Luxe Suites are with partially obstructed views due to lifeboats. Royal Suite 1102 (bow-portside) is wheelchair accessible but has only shower (no bathtub).

Room service is 24-hour, but not complimentary. Room service menu includes Caesar salad (GBP 8), soup (GBP 3,50), baguette with cheese and salad (GBP 7), burger with beef (GBP 13), homemade cake (GBP 6), beverages (tea-coffee GBP 1,80). Complimentary in-cabin Continental breakfast is available between 7 – 10 am (cereals,, breads, pastries, yogurt, fruits, juices, hot drinks).

The Magellan ship has no self-serve laundry rooms (launderettes). Dry cleaning is also not available. At extra charge are offered laundering and ironing (priced between GBP 2-6 per item).

Single cruise cabins

ms Magellan single staterooms are only 2 (numbers 5005 and 5006 on Baltic Deck). They can be booked with single occupancy rates (no single supplement required). All single-occupancy rooms are equipped with 1 lower and 1 upper bed, and have en-suite bathrooms. However, there are a total of 150 Superior Twin inside and oceanview rooms allocated for single occupancy. They can be booked at 25% supplement).

Standard Plus Single Inner (category 2S / on Magellan Deck 8) is sized 150 ft 2 / 15 m2. Rooms 8103-8104-8107-8108-8111-8112 are with twin beds (convertible to double). All other 2S-Standard Plus Single cabins are with a single bed plus sofa bed and Pullman bed.

Superior Single inner (category 3S / on Upper Deck 10) is sized 190 ft2 / 17,5 m2. Most rooms are with twin beds convertible to double.

Standard Single Oceanview-Obstructed (category 6BS / on Boat Deck 9) is sized 145 ft2 / 13,5 m2. All single outside rooms are with partially or fully obstructed windows.

Standard Single Oceanview (category 7S / on Main Deck 6) is sized 190 ft2 / 17,5 m2. Each of these rooms has a picture window.

Standard Plus Single Oceanview (category 8S / on decks 8-Magellan and 9-Boat) is sized 190 ft2 / 17,5 m2.

Superior Single Oceanview (category 9S / on Upper Deck 10) is sized 190 ft2 / 17,5 m2. The pairs 10101-10107 and 10102-10106 are connecting single cabins.

Handicap / wheelchair-accessible cruise cabins

For CMV Magellan cruise passengers with disabilities, there are a total of 21 accessible cabins equipped for passengers with mobility limitations plus their travel companions. All staterooms are with wider entry doors (2,8 ft / 84 cm; bathroom door’s width is 2 ft / 58 cm), turning spaces, beds with open bed frames, lowered vanity in the sitting area, amplified phones, captioned TVs, wider bathrooms (roll-in shower, fold-down shower bench, grab bars, lower sinks and closet rods, raised toilets, hand-held shower head).

Handicap rooms numbers are 1102 (Royal Suite), 5086, 5089, 5090, 5091, 5093, 5095, 5096, 5097, 5098, 5099, 5137, 5188, 5195, 6075, 6081, 6084, 6085, 6088, 6153, 6208.

All handicap cabins feature a convenient location near the ship’s elevators.

All passenger decks provide elevator access. All onboard dining venues, bars and lounges offer wheelchair access and seating.

CMV Magellan Deck Plans Review

CMV Magellan cruise ship deck plan has a total of 726 staterooms for 1417 passengers (max capacity is 1834 guests) served by 500 crew/staff, 9 passenger decks (out of 12) with 4 restaurants, 4 bars, 2 swimming pools, 3 jacuzzies, 8 elevators, a distinctive Carnival “Fun Ship” winged funnel. Stairs are often more steep than normal and lifts are relatively small.

The ship’s interior features wide corridors and stairways and expansive outdoor deck spaces. The cruising experience is traditional British (home-like). The ship offers lounges with comfortable seating, cozy bars, several indoor and outdoor observation areas, open-air deck games. Alcoholic beverages are priced reasonably (no extra service charge is added).

Dress code is daily casual and evening elegant (suit or jacket with trousers for men, cocktail dress or trouser suit for women). On each cruise there are at least 2 formal nights (6-night and longer itineraries). In the onboard restaurants are not allowed flip-flops, shorts, sleeveless tops.

Cruise And Maritime’s gratuity is GBP 5 pp per day, automatically added to your CMV onboard account. Gratuities can be altered by contacting the Reception staff. Shipboard currency is in GBP.

Magellan deck 3

Medical Center is the ship’s hospital operated by resident doctors/physicians and nurses on 24-hour call duty. The infirmary (open between 9 am – 7 pm /doctor hours 9-11 am and 5-7 pm) is equipped with defibrillators, external pacemakers, pulse oximeters, an ECG (electrocardiograph machine), thrombolytic and lab equipment. Treatments at the ship hospital are equivalent to a private doctor’s visit. All treatments, tests and medications are at extra charge. The only exception is Bonine (seasickness medication) also available for free at the ship’s Reception (24 hours). General health insurance policies do not apply, so buying cruise health insurance is recommended.

The ship’s physicians are independent contractors and render medical services at a customary fee. The basic fee doesn’t include medication, tests or treatments. Payments are made via the Cruise And Maritime Voyages boarding card.

Magellan Lounge (793 seats) is the ship’s 2-tiered theater (main show lounge) furnished with soft-benches, chairs and tables. Daily, the lounge hosts cooking demonstrations, itinerary-related port talks, shore excursions related presentations, expert guest lectures (themed on history, politics, culture, etc). The evening’s live entertainment program offers stage shows (performed by a resident show team of comedians, singers, dancers) and live band music. The theater’s evening shows are two (each 40 min long) with 2 sittings – early (at 8:15 pm) and late (at 10:30 pm).

Hampton’s Lounge & Bar (72 seats, open between 11:30 am – 12 midnight) is a classy piano bar and also hosts daily arts-crafts classes. This lounge has a grand piano, wall-mounted large TV, plenty of comfortable sofas and tub chairs, small round tables. Like the Captain’s Club, this is a great place for pre-dinner drinks. Evening entertainment program offers live musical performances (singers, resident pianist). The Hampton’s Bar also sells beers priced between GBP 2,80-4.30. Beer selection includes (canned and bottled) Heineken, Bass, Becks, Guinness, Franziskaner, Boddingtons, Corona, Grolsch, Cider Strongbow, John Smith’s Smooth, also non alcoholic beer, Shandy and the Bitburger draught beer.

Shopping Galleria is the area for the ship’s two duty-free shops. They are open between 9 am – 11 pm (seadays) and between 7:30 – 11 pm (portdays). The shops sell perfumes, cosmetics, jewelry, books, chocolates, alcohol, cigarettes (GBP 4,50), also clothes (gowns, dresses, shirts, T-shirts).

Kensington Restaurant (344 seats) is the smaller, midship-located dining room. Most tables are round-shaped (6-8-seats) plus some square-shaped 4-seat tables with leather seating. Dining tables are even-numbered. The restaurant is open for Breakfast (8 – 9:30 am) and Lunch (12 noon – 1:30 pm / seadays only) and Dinner (with 2 assigned sittings – early 6:15 pm, and late 8:30 pm).

Waldorf Restaurant (514 seats) is the bigger, aft-located dining room. Most tables are round-shaped (6-8-seats, 2-seat tables available upon request). Dining tables are odd-numbered. Breakfast (7:30 – 9 am) is self-service and offers an omelette station plus traditional British meals (cereals, yogurts, baked beans, grilled vegetables, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages). Lunch (12 noon – 1:30 pm) offers self-service (salads, desserts) and waiter-served main courses (usually 2 soups, pastas, meat/seafood dishes). Dinner is waiter-served, with 2 fixed sittings (early at 5:45 pm, and late at 8 pm). Dinners are served (6-course) offering soups, appetizers (incl vegetarian), main courses (incl fish dishes), desserts (incl chocolate cake, a variety of ice creams, fresh fruits, cheeses).

Both Kensington and Waldorf restaurants are complimentary (cruise price inclusive). At extra cost is “Surf and Turf’ (an alternative dinner option with lobster and steak) available on selected evenings at surcharge GBP 22 pp. Pre-ordering is required (at either of the dining rooms during lunch).

Magellan Lounge (upper level)

Photo Gallery has on display photos made by the ship’s professional photographers. It is staffed between 10 am – 12 noon (seadays) and between 9 am – 1 pm and 6 – 10.30 pm (portdays). The photographers are available around the ship and in dining rooms on select evenings. Photos cost GBP 11 per photo. With promo offers you buy 3 and get 3 for free. Photo-video packages cost GBP 136 (12 photos plus DVD), GBP 226 (17 photos, DVD, ship calendar.) and GBP 346 (25 photos, DVD, ship calendar). These packages are often sold at discount prices.

Internet Cafe has a total of 7 PC stations. Wi-Fi packages cost GBP 10 (2-hour), GBP 15 (4-hour) and GBP 35 (12-hour). Dedicated staff assistance is not available.

Jade Wellness Centre (aft-starboard location, open between 9 am – 9 pm) consists of sauna room, steam room, 6 treatment rooms (for massages, 1 is for couples), relaxation area (with comfortable seating), hair salon. Spa massages are reasonably priced and offered in 30-45-60-90 min sessions (honey massage, stone massage, herbal compress, shiatsu, thai, seashell therapy). Body treatments (scrubs and wraps) are in 45 min sessions (priced between GBP 45-65). WISHPro (anti aging treatment) is offered in 30 min sessions (priced from GBP 57 for 1 session). Facials are in 45 min sessions and priced between GBP 40-70 (cleansing, reviving, aromatherapy, deluxe caviar, eastern, Anti-Jet Lag, teen facial). Sauna and steam rooms are complimentary. Relaxation lounge and showers are complimentary only for passengers having spa treatments.

Part of the Jade Centre is the Beauty Salon & Sauna providing professional hairdressing services (styling, coloring, treatments), as well as manicures/pedicures, epilation, make-up.

The Mall is a carpeted indoor promenade area with panoramic seating along the starboard windows. On select days, here are set up stalls for fun demonstrations, such as food carving, towel folding, cooking demos.

Casino Royale (100 seats) has no its own bar. Seadays opening hours for the slot machines are 10 am till late. Gambling tables (blackjack and roulette) are open between 2 – 6 pm, and between 8 pm till late. On port days, the Casino is open between 8 pm till late.

Livingstone Library (20 seats) offers staff assistance between 9 – 11 am and 3 – 5 pm. This is quiet room furnished with antique leather sofas and chairs. It has a nice selection of books (all in English), news papers, jigsaw puzzles, popular board games.

Shackleton’s Conference Room (26 seats) on 5-night and longer itineraries hosts arts-crafts classes. Among those are millinery (hat making), bead jewelry making, calligraphy (writing designs), making decorative cards. While all classes are complimentary, some require onboard purchasing of the needed materials.

Nansen Card & Bridge Room (40 seats) is the lounge dedicated to bridge playing. The room is furnished with ten 4-seat tables (plush chairs). Here can also be played popular board games (incl Monopoly and Scrabble).

Scott’s Nightclub (86 seats) hosts daily fitness and dance classes (incl ballroom dancing). The ship’s disco features a large dance floor and nightly DJ programming, and also offers karaoke. The disco opens at 8 pm (till late, usually up to 5 am).

Sinatra’s Lounge & Bar (84 seats, open between 11:30 am – 1 am) offers portside views. The lounge has a grand piano and is furnished with bucket chairs and small round tables. Decor features B&W photos of movie stars.

Captain’s Club (191 seats, open 7 am till late) is the right place for pre-dinner cocktails. Most cocktail drinks cost GBP 4-5. Specialty tea and coffee drinks cost around GBP 3. This lounge has a stage for live performances, large dance floor, and is served by its own bar. Daily entertainment options include word games and trivia quizzes, beanbag bowling, bingo, deck quoits. Nightly, here are offered live music performances (singer, jazz quartet)

Magellan Deck 10 Plan – Columbus / promenade

The fore-located Navigation Bridge and the adjacent Captain’s Suite and officers quarters are inaccessible for passengers.

Raffles Bistro (230 indoor seats, 210 outdoor seats) is the ship’s self-service buffet restaurant. Weather permitting, meals can be taken outside. The Raffles Buffet has tea-coffee stations (24-hour open). Portion of the restaurant functions as Pizzeria (open between 12 noon – 6 pm) offering 2 different types of pizzas (vary every day) of which one is vegetarian and the other is with either beef, ham or chicken. The Bistro offers Breakfast (early 7 – 7:30 am, and regular 7:30 – 10 am) with cereals, bacon, sausages, eggs, cold meats, porridge, cheeses, fruits. Lunch (12 noon – 2 pm) offers soups, salads, main dishes (incl vegetarian, pasta, meat, fish), desserts. Afternoon Tea service (3:30 – 4:30 pm) offers scones, mini-sandwiches, pudding, also, salads and bread and butter. Dinner (6 – 8:30 pm) offers meat dishes (roast beef, pork, chicken, vegetarian) and desserts (incl chocolate puddings, fruit crumbles, sweet sauces, ice creams).

Main Pool is the bigger, rectangular swimming pool located midship.

Lido Pool (aft, overlooking the stern) is a round-shaped swimming pool flanked by 2 whirlpools.

Lido Bar (open 9:30 am – 8:30 pm) serves the Lido Pool (aft) deck area with drinks and refreshments.

Eros Bar (224 seats, open 9 am till late) is an outdoor bar serving the Main Pool deck area with drinks and refreshments. It also doubles as the ship’s Grill Bar offering complimentary grilled food (between 12 noon – 2 pm). The bar has all outdoor seating. Lunch food choices include burgers, hot dogs, chips, salad, desserts.

Columbus Deck is also the ship’s Promenade Deck, although this is not a full-circling around the ship promenade.

Magellan Deck 11 Plan – Navigator / Boat

Navigator Deck has cruise cabins from 1101 to 1115, all of which are forward-located SUites in categories JS-Junior, DS-Deluxe and RS-Royal.

Neptune Observation Bar (29 seats) is an open-air bar with outdoor seating and a stage for live performances.

Deck 11 also has outddor play areas for playing deck games (shuffleboard, giant chess, ping-pong, foosball (table soccer).

Gymnasium is the ship’s complimentary Fitness Centre (midship location) with Technogym equipment (3 running machines, 2 ski exercise machines, 3 stationary bicycles, free weights). The gym room has a dedicated area for aerobics classes and windows overlooking the Main Pool (on the Columbus Deck 10 below).

Magellan Deck 12 Plan – Sun

Sun Terrace (capacity 50-seats) is a sunbathing area with a round-shaped whirlpool. The ship’s sunloungers are metal-framed and colored in blue.
