Your day begins with a drive up Ørneveien (Eagle Road), enjoying magnificent views of Geirangerfjord en route to the beautiful Eidsdalsvatnet Lake. Norway’s original capital, Trondheim was founded as early as 997 by the Viking King Olav Tryggvason, who gave the town the name Nidaros. 4A SVARTISEN GLACIER

Situated near Ørnes, Svartisen is Norway’s second largest glacier. Your Hurtigruten ship will make a stop to allow you to transfer to another smaller boat for the excursion. It’s important not to forget your camera for this part because you will now be in the realm of the sea eagle, Europe’s largest predatory bird. Tromsø is located beside the mighty Arctic Ocean, surrounded by towering mountains. 6B BIRDWATCHING SAFARI

On this tour we travel to the small fishing village of Gjesvær. Along the way we will receive an introduction to the local flora and fauna, before visiting one of the world’s most exciting nature reserves, Gjesværstappan, which lies approximately 15 km west of the North Cape. From the vessel we can study Finnmark’s largest flock of puffins, together with large numbers of kittiwakes. During the nesting season this area teems with life as mighty sea eagles hover above in search of prey, while guillemots, razorbills, cormorants, Arctic skuas, northern fulmars, Brünnich’s guillemots, and the large northern gannet fill the air with a cacophony of shrieks and screeches. 6C A TASTE OF LAPLAND

From our port at the fishing village of Kjøllefjord we start with a short bus journey up to Oksevågvassdraget and continue into the mountains. Here, you’ll head to a Sámi camp and meet the Utsis, a Sámi family of reindeer herders who will welcome you into their lavvo dressed in traditional costumes. You will hear about the traditions and the Sámi people’s way of life, and will also get to hear a traditional Sámi joik (song). You then go out to see the reindeer where you can try your hand at lassoing. 7A THE RUSSIAN BORDER

The only town in Norway where East meets West, Kirkenes represents the turning point of your Hurtigruten voyage. We start with a short tour of the town, before the bus takes us deep into the surprisingly fertile landscape. Here you can take in the expanse of green hills, dotted with scrubs, birch and pine trees that manage to survive despite the harsh Arctic climate. The region has experienced an exciting and at times hugely dramatic history, so this also promises to be an educational morning. Next up, we make a stop at Storskog – the border station between Norway and Russia. Unfortunately we cannot cross the border itself, but you are permitted to take pictures and are normally able to purchase Russian souvenirs. From here we travel to the small mining community of Bjørnevatn, before heading towards Pasvikdalen, which boasts an imposing landscape filled with rolling green hills and robust trees, an area known to have Norway’s largest population of brown bears. Back in Kirkenes we make a stop at the impressive Prestfjellet Mountain, which overlooks both the town and your waiting Hurtigruten ship. Back to Itinerary

7B RIVERBOAT TO THE RUSSIAN BORDER

By the time you reach the jetty, the river boats will be ready and waiting to take you up the Pasvikelva, a river with a cultural history dating back thousands of years. This is the place to hear about the history of the Sámi people, the sacred Princes Boris and Gleb, St. Trifon of the Pechenga Monastery and to see the rich animal and plant life that thrives in this area. Reindeer, fish and bears make this one of the most exciting wilderness areas in Norway. 7H BIRDS OF THE ARCTIC

Norway’s Varanger region is one of the most attractive and popular bird-watching areas in the Arctic due to it being directly in the path of birds migrating from east to west. The advantageous biotopes combined with the rich resources in the adjacent Arctic Ocean attract myriad species and numbers of birds. Indeed, this is the only place in Europe you are likely to spot the rare Steller’s Eider. We will learn about this and other interesting species throughout the day. Just off the coast of Vardø is the island of Hornøya, Norway’s easternmost point and a breeding ground for some 70-80,000 Arctic seabirds. This area is also a melting pot of Sámi, Finnish and Norwegian cultures, all of which we will learn more about as we go. Back to Itinerary

8A BREAKFAST AT THE NORTH CAPE

On this excursion you can experience the immense North Cape, together with large parts of West Finnmark. The North Cape plateau stretches 307 meters (1,000 feet) above the churning Arctic Ocean and the special experience of witnessing it is well worth waking up early for. Here, at the very top of Europe, we will enjoy a hearty breakfast and see an impressive 180° panoramic film about the North Cape region through the four seasons. On your return you make a short stop to visit a Sámi family. From Honningsvåg, we drive through an underwater tunnel that connects the town with the mainland. The bus will then travel south along the majestic Porsangerfjord before heading back towards the coast to Hammerfest – a place that has undergone a dramatic change since it became the host municipality of the high-tech Snøhvit offshore gas field project. 8B THE NORTHERNMOST TOWN IN THE WORLD

Established in 1789, Hammerfest is the northernmost town in the world. On arrival here, the bus will take you to the Meridian Column, which is on the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites and commemorates the first official measurement of the exact size and shape of the Earth. From here we also have a spectacular view of Melkøya and the Snøhvit field (LNG). The town of Hammerfest has a long, eventful history; back in 1891 it was the first town in northern Europe to get electric street lighting produced purely from water power. As we head up Mount Salen, you will learn more about Hammerfest’s unique history, whilst also getting an insight into both Sámi history and culture and Europe’s first LNG factory (Liquid Natural Gas). Once at Salen’s peak, we can experience great views over the town and our waiting ship. With its exquisite glass mosaic window, there is perhaps no more beautiful way to experience the Arctic Cathedral than by attending a midnight concert. 8D REINDEER SPOTTING IN THE SUMMER NIGHT

On this excursion, we take you by bus from Mehamn through the magnificent scenery of mainland Europe’s northernmost peninsula, Nordkyn keeping our eyes peeled for reindeer. On this trip your guide will explain the geography of Nordkyn and give you a better understanding of exactly how far north you are. The first stop of the tracking mission is made on the barren landscape in the middle of the peninsula, approx. 300 meters above sea level. From here you can see for miles in all directions and often one can see reindeer grazing nearby, sometimes very close to the road. High quality binoculars will be supplied to enable you to observe the reindeer without disturbing them. While searching for the deer, your guide will tell you about the Sami people and their relationship with the reindeer, the area’s fishing heritage and human adaption to life at 71 degrees north including the weather and light & darkness through the changing seasons. We arrive at Camp Summer Night just in time to enjoy the lovely view of Kjøllefjord and your Hurtigruten ship making a beeline for the harbour. Here, you can enjoy a snack (including reindeer meat with homemade bread and lingonberry jam) while your guide explains the history and tells myths about the local area. During this trip, you will be required to participate in food preparation by frying meat over an open fire. When the clock strikes three in the morning it’s time to leave the camp and head back to your waiting ship for a well-earned sleep! Back to Itinerary
9A A TASTE OF VESTERÅLEN

Harstad to Sortland is one of the real classics in Hurtigruten’s excursion program. Today we will experience history, beautiful scenery and a selection of breath-taking sights. We begin with a short sightseeing through the streets of Harstad, before moving on to the Trondenes peninsula. Here, you visit the white medieval church, which is one of our premier cultural heritage sites from the late Middle Ages. You are truly on historic ground and in Trondenes Historical Centre, you’ll find an exciting exhibition complete with sounds, smells and original objects from the region throughout history; from the Viking and Middle Ages, to the present day. The bus then takes us across Hinnøya Island, where we can enjoy a view of beautiful fjords, steep mountains and large fertile agricultural areas. Moving on, you will cross the Gullesfjord by ferry, which will give you a chance to enjoy a hot drink and some freshly baked cakes. The tour then continues along the Sigerfjord to Sortland where you rejoin your ship. 9B LOFOTEN ISLANDS

Throughout history Lofoten has been the home and workplace of generations of fishermen; indeed, the Lofoten fishing season, in spring is still vital to the people and the local economy. Many people associate Lofoten with its precipitous, dramatic and often fabled mountains, together with its picturesque fishing villages, but Lofoten is so much more. You’ll find quiet bays, white sandy beaches, sheltered fjords and, perhaps surprisingly, large green agricultural areas. It is said that the light in Lofoten is unlike anywhere else in the world, which is why artists from Norway and abroad have always come here for inspiration. In Henningsvær, we will visit a gallery where several Norwegian artists portray the beauty of the archipelago and we will also see a slide show that captures the unique atmosphere here. 9C SEA EAGLE SAFARI

Just north of the Trollfjord is the realm of the sea eagle and it is here that a smaller vessel lies ready to take you out to see the king of the birds close up. First you accompany the Hurtigruten ship into the Trollfjord where you will see it turning around in the narrowest of spaces, a magnificent sight alone! The eagle safari begins in earnest when you leave the Trollfjord, starting with the gulls, which dive for fish right from your hand. You then pass through a narrow seaway flanked by a range of steep mountains. This is where the sea eagles dwell and can be viewed as they come flying in to get a share of the banquet. We let these beautiful, rare birds of prey circle the boat a few times, before we throw fish into the sea for them to dive in and collect. It’s all so close, so wild and so rare that some people forget to take pictures, but if you’re lucky, you may observe several majestic birds. From here the safari sets its course for Svolvær and you are left with the experience of seeing the King of Birds up close – memories that will stay with you forever. Back to Itinerary
9D LOFOTEN BY HORSE

Enjoy a horseback ride through the magnificent scenery of the Lofoten Islands! You’ll be picked up at the port in Svolvær and taken to meet your Icelandic steeds at the Hov Horse Farm in Gimsøy on the Lofoten archipelago’s Atlantic coast. Once here, it’s time to saddle up, and experience the wonder of a sunset trot through the powdery white sand, over hillside and past exciting relics from the Viking Age. As an island, Gimsøy has the greatest concentration of ’saga’ relics and in Hov, these monuments are etched into the landscape. Join us on a high-octane excursion by RIB (rigid-hulled inflatable boat) into the fantastic Lofoten archipelago. 10B UNESCO VEGA ARCHIPELAGO

The Vega Archipelago was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2004, a status gained due to the unique coexistence between the eider ducks and the islanders. Your tour around these islands will give you an insight into local village life as we travel by boat from Sandnessjøen, through the island kingdom of Vesterøyan. We pass small dwellings on the way to the fishing village of Nes, situated on the main island Vega. Here, you visit the “E-house”, a museum and documentation centre dedicated to eider ducks where we learn about the tradition of keeping eider ducks as domestic pets. Here you will experience the landscape of the eider ducks, with their exciting and colourful nest-architecture, and also gain more knowledge about the historical background of the tradition, and how the eider down is cleaned and made into quilts. 11D TRONDHEIM CITY WALK

A walk through Trondheim is a journey through its 1,000-year history. The harbour was developed during the second half of the 19th century, and you start your walk here at the quay. You walk up to Stiftsgården, the royal residence in Trondheim, and continue to the market square to take a closer look at the statue of the city’s founder, the Viking King Olav Tryggvason, which towers over this busy square. From here, you continue to Nidaros Cathedral, the national monument of Norway. You cross the old city bridge with its red gateway, known to the locals as “the portal of happiness”, and enter the area of the city called Bakklandet, which has managed to preserve its charming wooden architecture. Originally this was the industrial part of the city, but now the old factories have been renovated into desirable housing surrounded by boutique shops and gourmet restaurants. And it’s here that you find the world’s one and only bicycle lift which has to be seen to be believed!

11C THE ATLANTIC ROAD

8.2 km long, built on a total of eight bridges and surrounded by picturesque landscape, The Atlantic Road is one of Norway’s most visited tourist destinations and was the winner of the “Engineering Feat of the Century” prize in 2005. The tour begins with a short sightseeing tour of the clip fish town of Kristiansund before continuing to Averøy. From here we visit Kvernes Stave Church, which is believed to have been built in the first part of the 13th century. The church, which is a one-nave stave church of the ”Møretype”, is beautifully located on Averøy and is brimming with stunning ornamental artefacts. Afterwards, we go to the ”Bjartmars Favorittkro” tavern, where we are served the speciality of the house ‘Bacalao’, made from local ingredients and served with fresh bread. We finish with a scrumptious caramel pudding and a cup of coffee/tea, before we continue along the Atlantic Road. We finish the trip in Molde with a short sightseeing tour of the city that famous Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen called “The town of flowers”, but is today known locally as “the city of roses”.
