Cruise Itinerary

Nov 21: Phuket, Thailand

Phuket is one of the region’s economic powerhouses—millions of tourists visit the island every year, enjoying the many delights that are offered in this established resort island. Phuket is a modern, vibrant island with more than 6 million annual visitors, a number that is only increasing year-to-year. If you’ve never been to Phuket, you will likely love it; returning visitors will find a new island that eagerly greets its next wave of tourism. Koh Phuket is linked to the mainland by a causeway, and the rest of the world by an international airport. Its indented coastline and hilly interior make the island seem larger than its 48-km (30-mile) length and 21-km (13-mile) breadth.

Nov 22: Day at Sea

While we’re at sea, enjoy wine tastings, designer boutiques, language and dance classes. Take in a matinee movie, check the market or your e-mail in the Internet Point, slip away with a novel from the library to a sunny chaise or with a movie to your suite. Or just take in the sun pool side. The choice is yours.

Nov 23: Port Blair, India and Ross Island, Andaman Islands

The Andamans lie on the ancient trade routes between India and the Far East. They were known to mariners from as early as the 7th century. Among the first western visitors in the 13th century was Marco Polo, who wrote of the inhabitants as being “hostile people who would kill and eat any outsider that ventured onto the islands”. However, it was later established that cannibalism was not a practice in the islands. The islands were first settled by the British in the late 18th century when Captain Archibald Blair, on behalf of the British East India Company, founded a naval station on Chatham Island, now known as Port Blair.

Originally chosen by the British as the capital of the Andaman Islands, today Ross Island is characterized by a series of old buildings, left behind from a gilded age of occupancy between 1858 and 1941. Among the relics are a church, bakery, three clubs, printing press, government offices, Chief Commissioner’s house, tennis courts, an ice-making plant and a cemetery – all now in ruins. Since it has been neglected, creeping vines, fig and banyan tree roots overgrow and encase many of the old buildings giving the place a mysterious, haunting and timeless beauty.

Nov 24: South Cinque Island, Andaman Islands

South Cinque is home to some of the most spectacular beaches in the Andaman Islands. A 1 km (0.6 mile) wide sand bar connects South Cinque to North Cinque Island and the two islands are sometimes referred to as being a single Cinque Island. The Cinque Island Wildlife Sanctuary is a specially designated National Park Area with many coral bommies fringing the island. South Cinque Island also belongs to the Mahatma Gandhi Marine Park where more than forty coral species have been recorded in an impressive example of the biodiversity of this region.

Downtown Yangon is easily navigated on foot and the farther-flung areas can be reached without hassle by taxi or rickshaw. A fast-paced traveler could cover the best of Yangon in two days.

Nov 30: Lampi Island, Myanmar (former Burma)

Kyunn Tann Shey (Lampi Island) is a large and mountainous island of the Mergui Islands located in the Lampi Group. Lampi is officially uninhabited but does host fishing nomads who stop to camp on the island’s shores. It is rich in biodiversity, mangroves and coral reefs, and is big enough to hold wild animals – for a while it was even rumored to shelter a small herd of elephants. With rainforest and a fringing coral reef, Lampi’s outstanding beauty is enhanced by monkeys and hornbills in the forests, and sea eagles soaring in the blue skies overhead. Lampi was established in 1995 as Myanmar’s first marine national park. Ashore you can witness some of the area’s exotic flora and fauna.
