One of the first mobility classes I took with Cody, my good friend and mentor. Savana, Kelly and I always got yelled at for talking during class:)

A few months into joining the cult. The good cult:)

It’s true, I’m leaving the Southbay. A lot of you know this already, but this is my official announcement and farewell blog. It was a tough decision to leave not only the Southbay, where my family lives, but also to leave CrossFit Southbay. I’ve been a member of the gym since 2010 after months of my friends telling me I had to try it. Did my on-ramp with Forrest, where we officially bonded during long talks about the benefits of CrossFit and how to make the gym better. Total geeks, in addition to me wanting to yell at him every time he coached me because I swore I would never workout like this again after college soccer. But I’m so glad he pushed me because he helped introduce me to an amazing lifestyle, community and career! It’s been so fun coaching (I enjoyed every 6am class:)), teaching mobility and doing these weekly blogs! I just re-read one of my first blogs here and it was pretty entertaining.

The first class I taught at CFSB, teaching midline stability

More recent mobility class…..the gym has come a long way since I taught my first class!

My first descent overhead squat…..after falling a few times (please ignore the shoes).

Before I tried CrossFit I had been doing personal training at a studio in Hermosa. Forrest  convinced me to coach at the gym and It was the best thing I did because I was able to spend more time at the gym and get to know all of you! I seriously consider the gym my second family. Although the members have come and gone since 2010, the community aspect is amazing and I still keep in touch with the old members who have moved on. I spent long hours in the gym in 2011 when I was still in physical therapy school, working and working out. Some people thought I was crazy working during PT school, but it really helped keep me sane through all the studying. It was a great outlet where I could workout, have fun with great people and practice what I was learning!

This little booger was such a great addition to the gym and I will miss him too!

Mobility certification with my mentor Dr. Kelly Starrett. I totally had finals the next week for PT school but couldn’t miss him visiting CFSB!

After I graduated PT school in 2011 I was able to bring my career into the gym and start helping athletes, which was an amazing accomplishment because I had always wanted to blend my career with the sports world. And CrossFit has allowed me to do that, which I will be continuing in Denver. I will be doing exactly what I do at CFSB (mobility and PT) at a gym called CrossFit Colfax. An old member of CFSB actually coaches there (Sergio) which is how I was connected with them. I plan to have that as my main location and reach out to the other 21 or so gyms in the area as I get settled. My goal is to continue educating people on the importance of self-maintenance for injury prevention and performance enhancement, as well as help people recover from unavoidable injuries. One of the hard things about leaving CFSB is that this goal I’ve created for my career has been based off of working with all of you. You motivated me and continue to every day, trying to find ways to improve and help everyone move better. I care about everyone’s health and well-being at the gym and am on the search for someone to take over my role when I leave.

Halloween WOD….Crossfit Colfax doesn’t have a lovely hill like this but there will definitely be some adjustment with the altitude!

Just another fun Saturday morning WOD <3

I think the hardest thing about my decision to move was the fact that I had complete control over every aspect. Sounds like an easy situation, but there were so many options! Although I have a job lined up, I didn’t decide to leave necessarily because of that job opportunity. I have a great career set up in the Southbay at the gym and the other clinic that I work at called Physioworks. My move was more based on the fact that I grew up in the Southbay and it’s time for me to try living in another state. I’ve definitely done my share of traveling, and lived in places like Italy, Boston, Seattle and Davis. But in the long-term I’ve been a California resident and it feels like the right time in my life to try a new area. I’ve always been drawn to Denver, looking for school internships there and visiting friends. When I was out there last September I finally realized that Denver was the next spot I am supposed to be. So Colorado, here I come! My last day of work will be around Jan 24th and then I will be starting my roadtrip to Denver the following week. I will still be teaching mobility class until then, as well as PT for those who want to get in a session before I leave (you can schedule here).

Getting to work the CrossFit Games in 2012 was unreal!

And hanging out with this guy was awesome too…

WODing in style

I thought about mentioning all the people at the gym who have made an impact on me throughout my years here, but that would seriously make this blog PAGES LONG. There were so many reasons why I started coaching at the gym and continued to stay these last few years, with the main reason being you guys! I am blessed to have worked with so many amazing coaches, staff and members. I will miss all of you so much and I can’t even begin to tell you how much you have all made an impact on my life. I will still be following the gym happenings and will be back to visit family/friends. I will still be writing for Tabata Times’ Ask the Doc column, and possibly doing a blog for CrossFit Colfax. The easiest way for you to follow me will be through my facebook page Missy Physical Therapy. And come visit Denver! I can’t say that I can house you:) But I will definitely WOD with you…..and maybe take you line dancing!

The first gym I will be working at in Denver

My first Mobility class at CrossFit Colfax a few weeks ago. It won’t be the same as CFSB, but it definitely seems like a great community.

My journey with CrossFit has been many things, including very humbling and rewarding. Although I resisted it, I fell in love with the workouts and was part of the 5days/week crew. My frequency has lessened in the last year, mainly due to injury issues and work schedule. However I also tend to fluctuate with my workouts routines because I like the variation. Currently I’ve added more yoga into my routine, in addition to soccer, running and CrossFit. Who knows, maybe I’ll go back to 5 days/week of CrossFit in Denver. No matter the frequency of my workouts, I will always love CrossFit and be grateful for all that it has given to me.

I’m realizing I could continue on for pages, so I will stop now. I promised myself only to re-read for edits so the tears don’t keep coming. So I apologize for any repetitiveness. I love you all from the bottom of my heart, wishing you the best in life. And never stop mobilizing! I will still find a way to bug you all from Denver

Move well. Live well. Be well. xoxo
