Today we’re bringing back some athlete spotlight action!  We know you guys love your specific class hour and specific coaches, but knowing those CFSB’ers outside of your regularly attended class is never a bad idea!  With that I’ll introduce you to Tommy Lisack!

Tom and his wife Stacey!

How long have you been a member of CFSB?

About a year and a half

What do you do for a living?

I work for CBS, overseeing music content programs and artist relations for the broadcast network’s interactive division and it’s shows.

How did you hear about CrossFit and/or CFSB?

I was looking for a different approach for working out and something new and came across the website. I stopped by for the free Saturday AM class, and signed up for on ramp right after that. It’s been phenomenal ever since and exceeded what I was looking for really.

Do you have a favorite class hour?

I struggle working out in the AM and feel my body is not fully awake yet, so I like taking out all my stress from my work day out at the gym. I feel like I am more energized, get a better work out in, and gives me a great outlet to kick my mind out of office mode. All the coaches have been great, are fun and know how to push you.

Favorite TV show growing up?  What about now?

I may be dating myself but Dukes of Hazzard was my go to when I was a kid. Now, ESPN is always on in the background at home, which drives my wife crazy.

Tom getting his summer sick pack on!

What’s your favorite cheat meal?

Ice cream, or pretty much anything with chocolate on it.

What do you love about CFSB?

CFSB has been a great change for me and when I think about why I love it and why it’s a priority for me – aside from being a great way to stay in shape, it’s a fun community of people who encourage and push each other. Nothing ever gets boring because each day is different, and when you are committed to it, it has an extremely positive impact on you both mentally and physically.

Who/what has been the biggest influence in your life so far?  Care to expand why?

I had cancer when I was 18, and went thru chemo and radiation treatments for the next 8 months. It was by far the worst part of my life, but also in an odd way the best in terms of what I took out of it. The experience has made me who I am today and been the biggest influence on my life and everything I do, think, and say and just how I view things around me.

What did you do for fitness before CrossFit?  Did you play any sports growing up?

Before CFSB, I never did any weight training. Growing up, it was baseball and some crazy long distance running in my teens at a pace that seems insane to me now. I needed a change and wasn’t getting what I used to out of running so that’s what brought me to CFSB.

What are some of your hobbies outside of CrossFit?

Playing golf, and just hanging with my wife Stacey and dog Wrigley.

Do you have any advice for members new to CrossFit?

Don’t do it if you can’t commit to it. If you commit to it and can make it a priority in your schedule, I think everyone at CFSB would agree that you will gain something very positive in your life out of it.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Happy Hour:

Friday, November 1st we will be doing a gym Happy Hour at The North End (Bar) at 7pm.  Let’s ditch the spandex, pony tails, and sleeveless shirts, get fancy, wear regular clothes for a few hours and get chocolate wasted!

Barbells For Boobs:

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We will be holding our B4B event on Nov 9th at 9am. Don’t forget to visit our Barbells for Boobs Team Fundraising page and join our team to help raise money for this awesome cause. So far, we have raised $5,166. That’s just over 50% of our goal of $10,000. Congratulation to Rebecca Dreilling, Laurence Sotsky, and our very own (who ALSO happens to be running the whole CFSB B4B campaign this year!) Megan Kane for being our current fundraising leaders. We’re off to a great start, but we can do even better with your help!

ROCK CLIMBING! Friday November 29th at 7:30pm at Hangar 18 in Hawthorne.  Its about a 15 min drive from the gym with no traffic.  If you have never been climbing before, it is a ton of fun! It can be a great workout or just a fun way to supplement your training. It’s very easy to learn the harness and ropes system and safe as well.  I want to know how many people are interested and then we can get a group rate going which is $4 cheaper per person than the regular rate of $30 for all access, gear rental, and a belay lesson (which is where they teach you how to take in the slack from the  person climbing and how to lower them down safely).  If you have never been before and are anxious about the belay/harness stuff then you should take the lesson.  However, if you want to be brave, screw the lesson and just get all access and gear rental the cost is $21.
