Knowing that different people required different kinds of emergency care, Crittenton Hospital Medical Center has created an emergency department that focuses specifically on the needs of seniors.

This special unit offers amenities like eight private rooms staffed by a specially trained nursing team and appointed with larger print items, softer lighting, and soothing color schemes. The unit also features additional safety measures such as non-slip flooring, bed alarms, and hearing assistive devices.

“Our goal is to enhance the care we provide to the growing senior population in our community,” says Glenn Garwood, director of emergency services at Crittenton. We can better meet the needs of our older patients by offering this dedicated, senior-focused care environment.”

As the senior population continues to grow, so does the number of emergency department visits by those 65 and older. According the latest data by the National Center for Health Statistics, a total of 19.6 million emergency department visits in the United States were made by persons aged 65 and over. Garwood says by enhancing the care experience for seniors the hospital hopes to reduce number of preventable hospitalizations, decrease length of stays and reduce readmission rates.
