Co-worker discovered body on second floor of Office complex



Gordon Smith, the owner of Shearwater Proprty Management, was shot to death in his office.

CAPITOLA—Who wanted the owner of Shearwater Property Management dead?  That is the mystery that the Capitola Police Department has to solve in their first murder of the year.

A co-worker discovered the body of 63-year-old Capitola resident Gordon Smith just before 8 o’clock in the morning on Saturday.  Officers from the Capitola Police Department responded to Shearwater Property Management on the corner of 41st Avenue and Jade Street.

Once there, they found the body of the 63-year-old victim lying face down on the floor in his office.  After further investigation, the officers discovered that Smith had been shot multiple times.

“It appeared that Mr. Smith had been dead for several hours before being discovered.” Capitola Police Captain Tom Held said.  The Capitola Police is working this investigation with assistance from the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office and the department of Justice.  The Capitola Police Department is hopeful that the Department of Justice Forensic Team can provide more evidence in this homicide case.



Shearwater Property, where the shooting occurred, is located upstairs in this office building on 41st and Jade in Capitola.

The victim, 63–year-old Gordon Smith was the sole principal owner of Shearwater Property Management, which was founded in 2011.  The business had annual income of over 100,000 dollars.

As of this time, police have not discussed any possible motives in his case and are not ruling out any possibilities.  No suspects have been arrested in this case.
