On July 9, 2014, the Stay Family was shot and executed one-by-one police say by a suspected family member. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, 33-year-old Ronald Lee Haskell went to the home of his ex-sister-in-law on the 700 block of Leaflet Lane in a FedEx delivery suit and attempted to deliver a package. Instead of good intentions, according to investigators, he was attempting to find his estranged, ex-wife who was not at the house at the time.

When no one in the family would reveal his ex-wife’s location, investigators say that Haskell began to hold his nieces and nephews hostage until all family members arrived. It is believed, according to police and reported by CHRON, Haskell tied up the children ages 4 – 15 and their parents, Stephen and Katie Stay, made they lie down and shot each one execution style.

CHRON said the children, Cassidy, 15, Bryan, 13, Emily, 9, Rebecca, 7 and Zach, 4 and their parents, Stephen, 39 and Katie, 34, were all hit with bullets. What Haskell did not know, is one of the bullets may have only grazed the oldest child.

Police were called to the scene by 15-year-old Cassidy, who miraculously survived her gunshot. She told authorities that she played dead until her ex-uncle left. According to reports, she was able to give specific information about Haskell and where he was heading. It is believed Haskell was going to the children’s grandparents house to allegedly attempt to murder them as well.

Because of this brave child’s actions, and quick thinking investigators, deputies were able to corner Haskell in a nearby subdivision and take him into custody before he murdered the grandparents. Reports say he had a standoff with police, during which time he held a gun to his head.

According to authorities Haskell will be arraigned on July 11 on a capital murder charge. It is believed, according to the WSJ, Haskell previously worked for FedEx and that his how he had access to a uniform shirt.
