Local Tavern s Fish Bar in Painesville a pretty good catch
I d always heard good things about Chester s Legacy Tavern in Painesville, so I was disappointed to learn it had closed its doors before I had a chance to check it out.
However, I was excited to learn about the space s new identity, the Local Tavern s Fish Bar.
After all, the two Local Tavern locations, in Willoughby Hills and Mentor, seem to have a local following, and I love seafood, so I figured this would be a winning combination.
And it is, although the restaurant feels like it s still getting its legs its sea legs, if you will under it just a bit.
When you walk in Fish Bar, you find yourself in a small bar area with a few tables. I thought it was odd for a bar area, but, as we were being seated in another room with a much larger bar, I realized it must be mainly a spillover area for when the place is really hopping. We were seated among a row of booths that run parallel to the bar in what s a pretty fun but relaxing space.
Our very friendly server, Felicia, was quite attentive, taking our drink orders right away. My dad went with a Columbus IPA, while I chose the house pinot noir, and I was very happy with it for its $5 per glass glass price tag. The restaurant has a decent, but not overwhelming, selection of wines and beers.
I couldn t get my dinner
fake Michael Kors partner to go for anything really daring in the way of an appetizer we could split; the man had read some online reviews and was sold on getting a bowl of the Main Lobster Bisque ($6.99), which is topped with smoked paprika whipped cream. (Yes, that sounds amazing.) Trying to watch my carb intake, I ordered the Menage Mussels ($11.99). You might expect from the confusing name that you d get a sampling of mussels prepared three ways, but instead you must choose between arrabiata (spicy Italian), fresh chive cream and
Thai sweet chili with coconut milk. A huge fan of Thai food, I went with the last option.
When they arrived in a big bowl with a couple of pieces of crostini, the mussels had their good and bad points. That Thai flavor came through boldly and was delicious. On the other hand, most of them were soft and a little slimy. I m guessing that means they were a little undercooked side, but I m not sure. I am sure they were the softest mussels I ve ever had in a restaurant.
The
Michael Kors discounts bisque, on the other hand, was a taste sensation. I was given a taste or two and picked up on the smoky
cheap Michael Kors handbags outlet flavor without knowing about that unusual cream at the time. That is one easy to recommend bowl of soup.
Along with the appetizer and soup sections of the menu, there are selections of items under Freshly Shucked Blue Point Oysters, salads, sandwiches and burgers and From the Land the Sea (entrees). In fact, many of the choices at Local Tavern s Fish Bar have nothing to do with seafood. Tempting choices include the Blue Flame Burger ($11.99), which boasts American cheese, a fried egg, bacon and Blue Flame sauce; Butter Fried Chicken ($11.99), a buttermilk battered chicken with slaw, mashed potatoes and biscuits; and a couple of steaks, including the Cowboy Ribeye ($26.99), a 16 ounce cut of angus beef with mashed potatoes and sweet corn.
We were there for seafood, however. They have some
fake Michael Kors of the things you would expect, such as the trendy fish tacos ($12.99) with crispy mahi mahi, and staples such as crab
Michael Kors outlet legs ($29 for a pound and a half/$12.99 for a half pound) and lobster tails ($16.99 for one or $29.99 for two). On a normal day, I d probably order the Seafood Puttanesca ($13.99), which is pasta with shrimp, mussels, calamari, capers and garlic white wine and spicy tomato sauce, but, again, the carbs.
Dad went with the Gently Fried Walleye ($14.99), lightly breaded fish pieces with a choice of a variety of fries and Mom s slaw. (You can get perch instead for the same price.) I chose the Cedar Grilled Salmon ($13.99), which features two pieces of honey chipotle glazed salmon grilled on thin cedar wood and served with cucumber cream sauce. Because I was watching carbs, I stuck with one of the sides that accompanies it, the sauteed spinach. But,
cheap Michael Kors outlet because I just had to try it, I swapped out the other side, barley wild rice in favor of the lobster mash potatoes that come with a highly justifiable $3 up charge.
Our entrees arrived in a timely manner, both plates looking quite appealing. I had but one small complaint with my meal that the pieces of salmon weren t larger. And that s because they were absolutely delicious, easily the tastiest salmon I ve ever had. That honey chipotle glaze was everything I hoped it would be, and the creamy white cucumber sauce complemented it nicely. The spinach was nicely seasoned, but it would be an outright lie to
cheap Michael Kors say it could in any way compete with that lobster mash. Oh my, those seafood infused potatoes were seriously good. I was planning to have only a bite or two of what was a very generous portion but probably had six to eight during the time the plate was in front of me. (Believe me even that took restraint.)
Dad s walleye platter arrived looking more like an open faced sandwich, the several pieces of breaded
Cheap Michael Kors handbags walleye sitting atop and around some bread. We thought it was an interesting presentation but seemed a bit pricey for about $15. I had a taste of the fish and thought it was perfect just what I would have wanted had I ordered it but my father felt the breading was too much and took away from the fish. The skinny fries were fine but nothing to write home about, and Dad thought that Mom s slaw was a bit memorable.
I d like to see Fish Bar tighten up a few things. They could do away with their small print paper menus for something more substantial, and a website would be nice. (You can find their menu in the photos on their Facebook page.) Food wise, they could use another tempting seafood entree or two. These are all minor things, to be sure. And not necessarily in that order.
