GOLF TOURNAMENT TO BENEFIT USC-VHH FOUNDATION

USC Verdugo Hills Hospital Foundation, together with Keck Medical Center of USC, will hold its annual golf classic on Monday, Sept. 8 at Oakmont Country Club. Proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit USC Verdugo Hills Hospital Foundation.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. followed by a barbecue lunch at 11 a.m. The tournament will commence at noon and a special wine auction/reception and awards dinner will be held at 5 p.m.

VHHA ANNOUNCES NEXT MEETING

Verdugo Hills Art Association is having its next meeting on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. at the La Cañada Flintridge Community Center. There will be a presentation about the history and techniques of Impressionism titled “From Paris to Pasadena.” Presenter Betsy Woodford is a local, award-winning oil painter in the impressionist style. She is also a member of the California Art Club and the San Gabriel Fine Arts Association.

A $5 donation will be collected to attend the meeting.

CAMPFIRE PROGRAM

The next campfire at Deukmejian Wilderness Park is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 6 and the public’s help is needed! The community is in control of the programming for the evening.

Do you have a favorite thing that we should share with our campfire audience? Is there a plant or animal or some other natural wonder that the world needs to hear about?

Please submit the name of your favorite animal, plant, etc. to be considered for the campfire presentation. Our selection committee will review the topics and select a few of your favorite things for the Sept. 6 event.

The evening will start at 6 p.m. with 30 minutes of nature games in the picnic area. At 6:30 p.m., the party moves to the amphitheater area for crafts. The campfire will begin at 7 p.m. with the topics to be announced and will end with roasting marshmallows and making s’mores. All are invited for all or just part of the evening.

GLENDALE QUILT GUILD NEWS

On Wednesday, Sept. 10 the Glendale Quilt Guild featured speaker is textile artist Marcia Stein. She will present her series of large-scale pictorial quilts based on her travel photographs. We’ll journey with her to Santa Fe, Italy, England and the South of France, where she will show us her favorite scenes and explain how she created the quilts they inspired. A trunk show will be included.

The workshop the following Saturday will be ‘Picture This – From Photo To Fabric.”

FREE WORKSHOPS FOR CHILDREN

The Church of Scientology – Mission of the Foothills is hosting free workshops for children on how to make good choices in life. ‘UNFINISHED SPACES’ AT BRAND LIBRARY & ART CENTER

The Brand Associates’ REEL ART Series presents the award-winning documentary “Unfinished Spaces,” a film by Alysa Nahmias and Benjamin Murray. The film chronicles the story of Cuba’s ambitious National Art Schools project, designed in the wake of Castro’s revolution. The project was neglected and forgotten and eventually rediscovered as an architectural masterpiece.

Special guest Dr. Ken Breisch will make a brief slide presentation showing other modernist experiments that, unlike the art schools project, did come to fruition in Cuba after the revolution. Dr. Breisch will also lead a discussion and answer questions.

The screening will take place on Thursday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at Brand Library & Art Center (Recital Hall). Admission is free and open to the public. Complimentary parking is available in Brand Park adjacent to the library and an entrance for disabled individuals is accessible on the east side of the building.

RAPP IS BACK

After a restful summer, RAPP (Read And Practice Peacemaking) returns with another film presentation.

“The Revisionaries” documents the debates and the politics surrounding the Texas board of education as it wrestles with some members’ desire to include Creationism in the science curriculum. “The Revisionaries” will be shown on Friday, Sept. 12, 7:30 p.m. at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church. HEALTH CONFERENCE PLANNED

ARMUNITY, a program of Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services and other partners that addresses Armenian community health and wellness, and Glendale Community College are co-hosting an integrative health conference on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3  p.m. at the GCC auditorium.

Called “Healthy Living in a Changing World: Integrating health care from a holistic perspective,” the event is free and open to the public and will include professional panel sessions, an Expo fair with booths, lunch and raffle prizes. MUTT STRUT RETURNS TO CV PARK

The 4th Annual California Council of the Blind 2 and 5K “Mutt Strut” walk/run will take place on Saturday, Sept. 13 at Crescenta Valley Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Everyone is invited to bring a canine friend, whether a trained guide dog which assists a blind or visually impaired individual to safely and efficiently traverse their community, or the family pooch which gives so much unconditional love and companionship. In addition to the human and doggie camaraderie, plenty of food and drink will be available.

All proceeds go to promote the programs and services of the California Council of the Blind, the largest and oldest self-help organization of blind and visually impaired persons in California. CCB oversees several successful programs to assist members and nonmembers alike including a scholarship program that has assisted scores of blind and visually impaired students to achieve their educational goals; a no-interest equipment loan fund so that blind and low vision individuals may obtain or retain remunerative employment; a crisis fund to help with financial emergencies; and many others.

THE STORY OF WEATHERWOLDE CASTLE

Tujunga’s Weatherwolde Castle, built in 1928, was almost lost to the wrecking ball in 2005 to make way for new development. On Saturday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m., Little Landers Historical Society hosts William Malouf, Weatherwolde’s owner, for a presentation of the history of Weatherwolde Castle and how it was saved from demolition. The presentation will take place at Bolton Hall.

Malouf specializes in preservation and restoration of historical structures. Following a successful battle by Sunland-Tujunga community members to keep the home from being demolished, he and his wife Tara stepped in to buy this unique home and restore it to its original glory. He will tell attendees about historical documents and artifacts found in the home that clear up some of the rumors and mysteries surrounding Weatherwolde Castle.

This program is free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.

RATTLE PRESENTS ‘BLAST FROM THE PAST’

Rattle magazine will host the next installment of the 2014 Rattle Reading Series on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. Every second Sunday, Rattle continues to gather a selection of performers at Flintridge Bookstore from around the country for a series of poetry readings to celebrate the magazine.

The September Rattle Reading Series presents a collection of Los Angeles poets from previous issues of the magazine. What did we publish back then, and what have they been up to lately? Paul Suntup’s poem “Olive Oil” appeared in the summer 2004 issue. Lynne Thompson has appeared in Rattle seven times, making her one of the magazine’s most frequently published poets. Her most recent contribution was “Antilles. Lesser.” in summer 2010. Steve Westbrook’s “Cumberland Gap” also appeared in that issue, and was a semi-finalist for the Rattle Poetry Prize.

POPs PRESENT MOVING PRODUCTION OF ‘TOSCA’

Pacific Opera Project presents six performances of Puccini’s “Tosca” in Pasadena. Made possible by funding from over 150 backers through a successful Kickstarter campaign, this will be POP’s most ambitious production to date with a stellar cast and a 22-piece orchestra.

“Tosca” will be the 13th fully staged opera produced by POP and will incorporate a staging device rarely seen in theatre (much less in an opera with a full orchestra): moving the entire production from one location to another throughout the performance. This “Tosca” will take place in three separate venues, all within St. James Church that each represent another location within the opera.

31st ANNUAL DAY OF THE DEAD ALTARS & EPHEMERA

The Folk Tree presents its 31st annual Day of the Dead Altars & Ephemera exhibition from Sept. 27 – Nov. 2. The show features traditional altars honoring loved ones who have passed, as well as installations dealing with broader contemporary issues and concepts about death. Also on view is a large selection of work in various media by local artists and Mexican folk art commemorating this major Mexican holiday, which falls on Nov. 1 and 2. LEARN FARSI AT THE YMCA

The bookstore of the Friends of the Sunland-Tujunga branch of the library, which is located inside the library, is filled with used books on almost every subject. There are books on psychology, religion, self-help, cooking, classics and many more subjects. It is open during library hours (except evenings). Prices range from 10 cents to a few dollars. All books are donated.

All monies collected from the sale of these books support the Sunland-Tujunga Branch Library in purchasing new books, DVDs and equipment. The Friends also support programs for children and young adults as well as adults. It is a 501(c)3 organization, so donations are tax deductible. Arrangements can be made to pick-up large donations. Little Landers member Craig Durst determined the exact location from which each old photo was taken and reproduced the same photo taking into account the time of year, time of day and weather conditions to duplicate each of the original pictures.

“Then and Now” will be available for viewing at Bolton Hall through October.

Bolton Hall is open to the public on Tuesday and Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free.

FREE DIABETES COMMUNITY EDUCATION CLASS

The Diabetes Care Center at Glendale Adventist Medical Center invites the community to a free diabetes community education class held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the hospital (Committee Room A).

Participants will learn more about living with diabetes – care and treatment, healthy eating strategies – the importance of blood glucose monitoring and AIC and tools for healthy life style to reduce the risk of complications.

BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP AT Y

The Crescenta-Cañada Family YMCA, in partnership with the La Leche League, is hosting a monthly lactation and infant development support group to help support new mothers. This monthly group meets on the third Friday of each month from noon-1 p.m.  This group is free and open to the community and will answer all breastfeeding related questions that new mothers may have.

The Y is also offering a Mindful Parenting Course designed to help parents connect to their children and raise them to thrive. This course is adapted from the work of Dan Siegal, M.D and will focus on reducing daily stress while connecting with your child. The classes meet weekly on Tuesdays. The course is open to all and there is a fee to attend.
