Dave left the car and walked towards the building. Pete glanced at David, with his blond hair and blue eyes he had to be one of the most handsome men he had ever met but he had no wife or girlfriend. Instead he lived by himself in his old apartment. Outside the building looked pretty and safe but inside it looked like it was going to collapse on itself, a fact that Pete often reminded him. But he figured he had no right to speak as his own apartment was in the same state as his friend’s.

It was 11 pm and Pete was parked outside David’s building waiting for him to come down. Two days had passed since he talked to David and now they were going to do it. Pete seemed very certain when talking about it but now he was not so sure. I will go out tonight and if things get too crazy we won’t do it again. He was dwelling in his thoughts when he felt someone approaching his car. He looked out of the window and saw David wearing a hockey mask. He rolled down the window and David was laughing.

He opened the newspaper and saw a picture of the house he and David raided the last night and the title 4 Wounded in Gang War. It was with little surprise that Pete noticed that the article was written by David Smith. “A group of 4 men were found unconscious in their house in what the police said as a product of a gang war for control of drug trafficking in that area. None of the victims lost their lives but all four were gravely wounded with two of them entering a coma.” The article also mentioned the discovery of the clandestine lab and that the identities of the attackers were unknown which was a big relief for Pete.

“We’re famous old Pete.” David laughed “Don’t worry, the police has no idea we did it, I made sure of that. There’s also another thing I wanted to talk with you about.”

Pete found himself alone in a dark corridor whose only light source was a dim light bulb hanging on the ceiling. He did not know where he was or how he got there but he kept walking anyway. As he kept walking the light bulb seemed to always be at the same distance from him, never closing in. The walls were white but had blood splattered across them. After walking for a while he found a man sitting against the wall. He approached him and realized that it was the men they had killed and that he had a hole in his head. He left him be and kept walking until he reached the end of the corridor. In front of him was a window where he could see that the outside world was nothing but darkness. On his left was an old, white, wooden door which he opened without hesitation.

Pete stepped inside the dark room. It seemed empty and he couldn’t see anything except for a mirror hanging on a wall. He walked towards it and saw his reflection: he had the mask on. He tried to get it off but he couldn’t, it was like it was glued to his face. He used both hands and still wasn’t coming off. He was screaming at this point and then he finally managed to remove the mask. He stopped to regain his breath and when he looked into the mirror he was horrified with what he saw: his face wasn’t his face, it was David’s face that appeared in the mirror, smiling.

Pete woke up sweating and screaming. For instants he expected to be in that dark room but soon he realized that it had all been just a dream and he was at his lonely apartment. God, what a terrible nightmare.

“That woman walking down the street. She saw the car.” Pete looked around and he saw her. Beige coat, long, curly, blond hair. He recognized her immediately. Dear god, it’s Ellie! What is she doing here? Maybe she came to visit her father. Shit man, keep it cool.

It was that last word that broke his heart. He heard Ellie’s father screaming as well but he was no longer paying attention. He spaced out and started walking aimlessly through the empty streets. Monster…. I am a monster. It had started to snow but Pete didn’t mind. In fact, he hoped to freeze to death right there. But he didn’t, instead he found himself back at his apartment building.

There was police tape in his door which he busted through indifferent. He just did not care anymore. He sat down and turned on the TV: …the shootout that ended moments ago has claimed the lives of 14 police officers in this Christmas evening. Strangely, none of the bodies of the three criminals were found and the police are now conducting searches. This crew is suspected to be behind the… Pete turned off the TV and closed his eyes. Luckily I won’t have to open them again.

He woke up two hours later for no particular reason. For a moment he expected to feel Ellie’s comforting hand but when he reached his hand there was nothing there. He looked at his phone and wasn’t surprised when he saw that he hand a voice message from David. What surprised his was the message itself: Hey, Pete. You scared us a lot when we saw jump out of the window. Are you okay? Anyway, I know you have plans with Ellie but I was wondering if you could stop by and maybe have a drink. The usual stuff you know. I will be waiting.
