Photographer Frank Herfort's artist statement opens with the line: "The whole world is frozen in a condition of waiting." His photo series entitled Time In Between - Fairy Tale Of Russia depicts this notion perfectly. Each subject appears to be stuck in a specific moment, never to age or move on from the scene in which they exist.

"The people in these photos seem to be totally absorbed in a deep, paralysing, enchanted slumber."

The subjects in question were photographed in Moscow, Saint Petersburg and other places in Russia. Herfort discusses the contrast with Western Europe: "In Western Europe everything is so neatly defined, so specific. A waiting room is a waiting room, an office is an office. In Russia, in contrast, rooms are open to interpretation, many-layered and not so prettified. And I also noticed that there seem to be many more people just sitting around in them."

During his travels, the photographer asked many different people to pose for him. Rather than choose a classic style of portraiture, he instead manipulated the set-up to make use of the often melancholy atmosphere of the location.

We think there's something hauntingly beautiful about Herfort's work. You can discover more on his website.
