Proving that ballet doesn’t need to be performed on a stage, a group of ballet dancers have pirouetted onto the streets, flitting amongst crumbling brickwork, industrial bridges and graffiti. Caught on camera by photographer Omar Z Robles, the project has taken Instagram by storm under the hashtag #ozr_dance.
The unusual backdrop breaks the traditions and conventions of ballet, showing that it is a beautiful art whatever the surroundings or costume. Fascinated by the human body, Robles aimed to displace associations of ballet through the street ballet project, showing the workings of the body within an urban setting, saying, “I’m in love with how you can express and create all these beautiful lines and movements with just the human body”.
