Aberdeen-based media and communications agency AVC Media was today announced as winner for a prestigious national award up against brands such as the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics Opening and Closing ceremonies, Nokia, and Sainsbury’s.

The firm, which won the Award for Innovation category at the IVCA LiveCom awards, had created an event for offshore drilling contractor Stena Drilling which provided visitors with a full offshore experience.

Spencer Buchan, managing director at AVC Media , said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won an IVCA award.

“The team worked extremely hard to pull together the project and integrated a number of AVC’s services including media productions, event management, audiovisual hire, creative design and augmented reality to bring the entire offshore experience to life.

“To be the only Scottish agency nominated for the award and then win really is a testament to the great work being produced here at AVC.”

Eirik Reinertsen, Stena Drilling marketing & business development manager said: “We are delighted for AVC to have won this prestigious award.

“The Stena Drilling Exhibition had the aim of showing the whole company, including the owners, all the integral aspects of the drilling industry and in essence how it is to work offshore on a drilling unit.

“The exhibition was visited by over 3000 delegates and the event was an enormous success. Again congratulations!”

IVCA is Europe’s largest professional body for business and public sector communicators which, in partnership with UK Trade and Investment, promotes excellence in live and experiential communications both in the UK and overseas.

The awards ceremony was set up to celebrate creativity and effectiveness in live events and experiential marketing.

Stena Drilling Ltd commissioned AVC to event manage the exhibition which provided visitors with a unique offshore experience.

The event, which happened in September 2012, showcased what it is like to work offshore for Stena Drilling - simulating everything from the survival training and helicopter check in, right through to working on the drill floor in such positions as driller and crane operator.

The first of its kind, the AVC team was tasked with sourcing equipment and materials to make the event as realistic as possible including one of the key attractions of the event, the tunnel which recreated the experience of stepping off the helicopter and arriving offshore.

To add to the realistic effect, wind machines, scent machines with diesel exhaust, ocean and oil machinery, and wave projections were also used.

Also nominated in the category was the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the audience pixel hardware and content, Nokia Lumia live project and Sainsbury’s Paralympics Customer & Colleague Activation Programme.
