BNM reported that the investment bank’s total risk weighted assets improved 8.6%in April 2010, and this will continue as the economy and investing activities grow. With encouragement from the government, the demand for investment banking in Malaysia had increased.

Consumer Banking in Malaysia 2010

Prior to 1997, commercial banks were only allowed to accept demand deposits from the public or engage in foreign exchange operations. Meanwhile, finance companies forte were hire-purchase whereas investment banking activities were carried on by merchant banks. The banking industry Malaysia since then had changed drastically, with support by the government in the banking sector.
