The Legend of the Spider-Prince: Rebel is a fabulously written fantasy novel about a young boy named Wyl. Wyl is a mere 12 years old but has lived the life of a rebel outlaw. The medieval-like setting is a perfect backdrop for this fairy tale story full of action, intrigue, and the intricacies of royal court life.
The book jumps right in and I was placed in the middle of preparations for a battle. The author has created a lot of words for this fantasy world so it is not a quick read; you must really pay attention to follow the story. There is no glossary so you must figure out their meaning from the context. What I appreciated about it was the author showed up the world and did not spend too much time building it. I have read some books where the author spent so much time and detail building the world, that it became a bit tedious. But once you get into the story, you learn the words and they become part of this marvelous realm you are discovering.
I really liked Wyl. He was young but also very brave and fearless. And he makes mistakes. Lots of them. But his heart is always in the right place; he is trying to do the right thing and takes his punishments like a man. The rest of the cast of characters are numerous and interesting. There are many different kingdoms with different customs, diverse ways of life, and settings.
The ending is magnificent. I seriously could not read it fast enough for wanting to see what was going to happen. It left me breathless! I am so glad this is part of a series. I love reading a series and young Wyl definitely still has a lot to learn and I can’t wait to read about it.

I loved fairy tales as a child, but could never get enough of them until I learned to read for myself. I spent my formative years with my nose in a book or playing dungeon master for my sisters long before there were actual games requiring one. Our Barbies fought Klingons, conquered the galaxy—and always had room on their spaceship for horses.
