There has been a huge trend in recent years of using paper planners again. Within this trend is the even trendier option of a new style called Bullet Journaling. Bullet Journaling (or BuJo for short – which is a great abbreviation for text, but hard to actually take yourself seriously when you say it) is most often done in a journal with a light dot grid pattern all over instead of lines or boxes.

Many Bullet Journals or Dot-Grid Journals have numbered pages so you can index your lists and layouts and easily access them (brilliant!). Having the numbered pages with an index in the front makes it easier to switch from a planner style to to-do list to master list to scrapbook.

The key and the draw of Bullet Journaling is that a Bullet Journal can be anything you want. You can create elaborate layouts or just make lists. You can skip a week or even months and there are no unusable pages to make you feel like you wasted something. Bullet Journals are probably the most open-ended journal. It’s a perfect system for the type of person who can never get what they want in a pre-printed planner.

→ Some things people track in their Bullet Journals:

goals, water intake, menu planning, vacation planning, budgeting and saving, movies to watch, TV series binges, books to read, things they have accomplished (a done list), last time list (last time they changed their oil or flipped the mattress), mood trackers, monthly or weekly planners, seasonal things they want to do, work goals, exercise tracking, recipes to try, craft projects list….the list is endless and the way to record it is as well.  Are you ready to start?

Tips on Starting a Bullet Journal

• Get a Journal. Although technically you could use any blank book to Bullet Journal, there is something about the dotted grid that truly helps you create boxes and write better. It’s some kind of weird paper magic. There are a few different kinds, but one of the most popular is the Leuchtturm 1917. A high quality and nice feeling journal

• Just start. If you do any research on Bujo you will find lots of articles that tell you exactly how to set up your Bujo. Just reading these lists can make you give it up. If you’re the kind of person who wants a lot of structure and how-to’s you’ll probably love those tutorials. But, if you’re the type of person that starts putting things together before reading the instructions, I’d skip it. There is no wrong way to Bullet Journal. So, just start with what you want to keep track of. There are plenty of pages to add all you want later

• Keep a separate list for your Bullet Journal. This could be on your phone or a little notebook. You will find yourself thinking of all kinds of things you’d like to keep track of through-out the day, but may forget when you’re sitting in front of that blank page.

• Get inspiration, not expiration. There are a lot of Facebook groups, Instagram profiles and Pinterest links about Bullet Journaling. Following these communities can give you lots of ideas. It can also make you feel like you’re not doing it right and may make you want to quit. Just take what inspires you and leave the rest.

• Invest in some nifty tools. Find some pens you love using (we recommend Stabilo Pens, Gel Pens or Tombow Markers. Find some washi tape you love. There are many rubber stamps that are made for specifically for planners and journals.Using stamps or stencils to create the layout means you can design it any way you want.
