Winner of the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra’s Inaugural Len van Zyl Conductor’s Competition in 2010, CPO resident conductor Brandon Phillips began his music career in the New Apostolic Church where he learned various instruments and also choral training. He studied bassoon and viola at the University of Cape Town, receiving his Diploma for orchestral studies and B Mus Honours in solo bassoon in 2005. Phillips currently is also  principal bassoon of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra  and artistic director and conductor of the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.

Albie van Schalkwyk has established himself as performer in a number of fields over the past 30 years. One of the leading chamber musicians and vocal accompanists in South Africa, he has also performed as soloist with SA orchestras, performed solo recitals, given master classes for singers and accompanists, worked as a music producer for the SABC, and arranged music for various combinations, including Broadway musicals and operas for 2 pianos and orchestral pieces for 3 to 8 pianos. He was appointed Associate Professor in Piano and Chamber Music at the College of Music, UCT, in 2009

Samson Diamond, leader of the Odeion String Quartet at the University of the Free State, and concertmaster of the Free State Symphony Orchestra (FSSO), is a graduate of  the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK, where he obtained both Bachelor of Music Honours Degree First Class (2006) and his Master of Music Performance (2007) degree with distinction. He has played extensively in the UK as a freelance musician, and has appeared as soloist with the East African Symphony Orchestra in Tanzania and the major South African orchestras.

Cellist Anmari van der Westhuizen, adjunct professor at the University of the Free State, studied at the University of Stellenbosch, the Mozarteum in  Salzburg,  the Hochschule für Musik in  Cologne and holds a PhD in Music Performance from the University of Pretoria.  She has won many prestigious competitions including the ATKV Forte Competition, the SABC Competition and the Oude Meester Competition. She has performed as soloist with all the major orchestras in South Africa performed as a chamber musician and soloist in Australia and widely in Europe.
