We’re adding this year’s victories to the full rankings list
This summer, I lost my mind decided to rank all 94 of Mike Gundy’s victories at Oklahoma State. If you want to see the original rankings along with the explanations, they’re right here.
This season, Gundy reached his 100th victory. Plenty has been said about the fact that Gundy has won 100 games at his alma mater. His achievement at Oklahoma State is rare and nothing to be balked at (and why, when we debate paying or keeping him, I get mad at people). OSU’s 10-3 record means Gundy adds 10 victories to his total, bringing him to 104 wins in his head coaching career.
To make this all fit in one post, I’m just going to adding this year’s wins to the full rankings and only include the reasoning for the 10 new wins:
104. Savannah State (9-1-2012) Cowboys win 82-0.
103. Grambling State (9-26-2009) Cowboys win 56-6.
102. Florida Atlantic (9-16-2006) Cowboys win 48-8.
101. Missouri State (9-6-2014) Cowboys win 40-23.
100. Lamar (9-14-2013) Cowboys win 59-3.
99. Central Arkansas (9-12-2015) Cowboys win 32-8.
98. @ Florida Atlantic (9-8-2005) Cowboys win 23-3.
97. Texas Tech (9-15-2009) Cowboys wins 24-17.
96. @ Kansas (10-13-2012) Cowboys win 20-14.
95. Troy (9-11-2010) Cowboys win 41-38.
94. Montana State (9-3-2005) Cowboys win 15-10.
93. Arkansas State (9-17-2005) Cowboys win 20-10.
92. @ Central Michigan (9-3-2015) Cowboys win 24-13.
91. @ Kansas (10-11-2014) Cowboys win 27-20.
90. vs Arkansas State (9-9-2006) Cowboys win 35-7.
89. Missouri State (9-2-2006) Cowboys win 52-10.
88. Southeastern Louisiana (9-3-2016) The Cowboys got up 31-0 before Southeastern Louisiana scored their only points of the game. OSU held the Lions to 194 total yards. It was nice to have football back, but it was still a 54 point blowout that got boring quickly. Cowboys win 61-7.
87. @ Louisiana-Lafayette (10-08-2010) Cowboys win 54-28.
86. Louisiana-Lafayette (9-15-2012) Cowboys win 65-24.
85. Kansas State (10-5-2013) Cowboys win 33-29.
84. Sam Houston State (9-30-2007) Cowboys win 39-3.
83. Rice (9-19-2009) Cowboys win 41-24.
82. @ Baylor (11-17-2007) Cowboys win 45-14.
81. Florida Atlantic (9-8-2007) Cowboys win 42-6.
80. Missouri State (9-13-2008) Cowboys run away 57-13.
79. @ University of Texas at San Antonio (9-9-2013) OSU wins 56-35.
78. @ Kansas (10-22-2016) For most of the first half, OSU couldn’t escape the Jayhawks. Kansas actually lead 13-10 late in the second half. The Cowboys did finally take the lead for good with a Justice Hill touchdown run with 2:47 left before halftime. It wasn’t a bad win, but it went from “what is happening” to, “let’s just move on to next week”. Cowboys win 44-20.
77. Insight Bowl vs Indiana (12-31-2007) Cowboys win 49-33.
76. University of Texas at San Antonio (9-13-2014) Cowboys win 43-13.
75. Texas Tech (11-12-2016) This was without a doubt, the most stressful and frustrating game of the 2016 season. OSU started both halves getting points and stops, looking like they would pull away. Instead, Tech found ways to pull themselves back into the game. If not for a missed extra point with 1:44 left, this game likely would have gone to overtime, with all the momentum on the side of the Red Raiders. For once, it looks like Squinky was going against someone OTHER than OSU at BPS. Cowboys escape 45-44.
74. Heart of Dallas vs Purdue (1-1-2013) Cowboys railroad the Boilermakers 58-14.
73. @ Iowa State (11-14-2015) Cowboys escaped 35-31.
72. Kansas State (10-3-2015) Cowboys squeak by 36-34.
71. @ Kansas State (10-30-2010) Cowboys win 24-14.
70. Kansas (11-9-2013) Cowboys win 42-6.
69. Louisiana Lafayette (9-3-2011) Cowboys win ugly 61-34.
68. @ Baylor (10-24-2009) Cowboys win 34-7.
67. Missouri (10-18-2009) Cowboys win 33-17.
66. @ Colorado (11-16-2008) Cowboys win 30-17.
65. Iowa State (10-4-2014) Cowboys win 37-20.
64. University of Texas at San Antonio (9-20-2015) Cowboys destroy 69-14.
63. Troy (9-27-2008) Cowboys win 55-24.
62. @ Kansas (10-14-2006) Cowboys win 42-32.
61. Iowa State (10-8-2016) Ever since that infamous 2011 game, there’s a joy to beating Iowa State that’s unlike any other opponent. Destroying them by 4 scores is nice. Coming back from 17 points down in third quarter to win, that’s awesome. On the flip side, we were down 31-14 in the third, at home, against a 1-5 cyclone Team. I loved the comeback, but it never should have reached that point to begin with. Cowboys comeback to win 38-31.
60. @ Iowa State (11-08-2009) Cowboys win 34-8.
59. TCU (10-27-2012) Cowboys win 36-14.
58. Texas Tech (9-25-2014) Cowboys win 45-35.
57. @ Washington State (9-30-2008) Cowboys win 39-13.
56. Kansas (10-8-2011) Cowboys roll 70-28.
55. @ Texas Tech (11-12-2011) Cowboys win 66-6.
54. @ Tulsa (9-17-2011) Cowboys win 59-33
53. @ Texas (9-26-2015) Cowboys escape 30-27.
52. Arizona (9-9-2011) Cowboys win 37-14.
51. Tulsa (9-18-2010) Cowboys win 65-28.
50. Mississippi State (8-31-2013) Cowboys win 21-3.
49. Iowa State (10-26-2013) Cowboys win 58-27.
48. #23 Texas Tech (11-17-2012) Cowboys win 59-21.
47. West Virginia (11-10-2012) Cowboys win 55-34.
46. Washington State (9-4-2010) Cowboys romp 65-17.
45. Kansas State (10-20-2007) Cowboys win 41-39.
44. Houston (9-7-2008) Cowboys win 56-37.
43. West Virginia (10-11-2015) Cowboys escaped 33-26.
42. @ #22 Texas (10-15-2011) Cowboys win 38-26.
41. Texas A&M (10-4-2008) Cowboys win 56-28.
40. #22 Baylor (11-6-2010) Cowboys win 55-28.
39. at Missouri (10-22-2011) Cowboys win 45-24.
38. Iowa State (11-1-2008) Cowboys win 59-17.
37. Baylor (10-18-2008) Cowboys win 34-6.
36. @ TCU (11-9-2016) I’ll admit that part of this ranking is because I was at the game. At half if was 10-6 OSU and yet half of the TCU fans never returned to their seats. By the start of the 4th the score was 24-6 and there was more orange in the stadium than purple. Cowboys win 31-6.
35. Independence Bowl vs Alabama (12-28-2006) Cowboys win 34-31.
34. Pittsburgh (9-17-2016) What a crazy game. It started with a 91-yard touchdown pass for OSU. Rudolph tossed multiple bombs, Washington made people notice him, and Rennie Childs had the best game of his career. The Cowboys could never quite pull away from Pitt and the rain delay made the game weird, but OSU got it done. It was a big win, and helped right-the-ship after the CMU catastrophe the week before. A loss here could have sent OSU reeling. Instead the Cowboys found a way to beat a talented Pitt team. Cowboys win 45-38.
33. Colorado (11-19-2009) Cowboys win 31-28.
32. Texas A&M (9-30-2010) Dan Bailey wins it 38-35.
31. @ #15 Texas Tech (11-2-2013) Cowboys win 52-34.
30. @ Texas Tech (10-31-2015)Cowboys win 70-53.
29. Baylor (10-29-2011) Cowboys win 59-24.
28. #22 Texas (10-1-2016) After a disappointing 2-2 start to the season, OSU welcomed in a Texas team that some people thought was the “real deal” (can you believe they were ranked!?!?). I don’t care that Texas didn’t make a bowl game. It was a much needed win for OSU. Not to mention only the second ever win over Texas in Stillwater. It was also Gundy’s 5th win over the Longhorns in seven years. Oh, I almost forgot we blocked three extra points, including this beauty...
The fact at Texas was not “back”, like some thought, take some of the luster off the win, but not much. Cowboys win 49-31.
27. Cactus Bowl vs Washington (1-2-2015) Cowboys win 30-22.
26. @ Kansas State (11-5-2016) This is all about that finish. Oklahoma State, after blowing a 21-16 halftime lead, eventually found themselves trailing 37-28 midway through the 4th. After two touchdowns got them a 43-37 lead, OSU needed one final stop to win the game... and that final 1:46 took what seemed like FOUR HOURS! Hell, the final seconds seemed to go on forever. I think I speak for most OSU fans when I say my heart was beating out of my chest and my stomach was at the back of my throat at the end of that game. It was one of the most stressful finishes ever... and one of the greatest. Cowboys win 43-37.
25. #20 Nebraska (10-28-2006) Cowboys win 41-29.
24. @ #24 Texas (11-16-2013) Cowboys win 38-13.
23. #24 Iowa State (10-20-2012) Cowboys win 31-10
22. #13 Georgia (9-5-2009) Cowboys win 24-10.
21. Kansas (10-24-2015)Cowboys win 58-10.
20. TCU (10-19-2013) Cowboys win 24-10.
19. Baylor (11-11-2006) Cowboys go bowling 66-24.
18. #14 Kansas State (9-6-2011) Cowboys win 52-45.
17. @ Kansas (11-20-2010) Cowboys make history 48-14.
16. @ Texas Tech (10-16-2010) Cowboys win 34-17.
15. @ Texas (11-13-2010) Cowboys win 33-16.
14. Texas Tech (9-22-2007) Cowboys win 49-45.
13 . Alamo Bowl vs Arizona (12-29-2010) Cowboys win 36-10.
12. #13 Texas Tech (9-12-2005) Cowboys win 24-17.
11. @ Nebraska (10-15-2007) Cowboys win 45-14.
10. Alamo Bowl vs #10 Colorado (12-29-2016) The 30-point victory over a Top-10, conference runner-up was the team’s best performance of the season. OSU embarrassed one of the season’s best defenses, while putting on an impressive defensive performance of their own. It also sets up a lot of hype for 2017. It reminds me of the 2010 Alamo Bowl win over Arizona (see No. 13). The Cowboys combined a big win with the return of a hugely talented quarterback and receiver to set up a big season the next year. Cowboys win 38-8.
9. #10 West Virginia (10-29-2016) Of course this is in the top 10. It was Gundy’s 100th victory and it couldn’t have been more perfect; beating his former offensive coordinator in front of a homecoming crowd, and knocking a Top-10 ranked Mountaineers team from the ranks of the unbeaten. Looking back, the game never felt out of hand. Yes, the Mountaineers made a 4th quarter run to get the game within 7 points, but OSU responded. It was a great game and a historic moment for Oklahoma State’s FIRST 100 win coach! Cowboys win 37-20.
8. #3 Baylor (9-23-2013) Cowboys win 49-17.
7. @ #8 Texas A&M (9-24-2011) Cowboys win 30-29.
6. #8 TCU (11-7-2015) Cowboys win 49-29.
5. @ Texas A&M (10-10-2009) Cowboys win 36-31.
4. Fiesta Bowl vs #4 Stanford (1-2-2012) Cowboys win 41-38.
3. @ #18 Oklahoma (12-6-2014) Cowboys win 38-35.
2. @ #3 Missouri (10-11-2008) Cowboys win 28-23.
1. #10 Oklahoma (12-3-2011) Cowboys win the Big 12 title 41-10.
