Opening Fashion Week month last week, all eyes have been on New York City to see the hot new hair and make-up styles we will be coveting come springtime – and the looks that are carrying on from the current Fall/Winter season.

With a big collective of traditional fashion houses and edgy, younger designers showing in the city that never sleeps, the US metropolis has always had a huge influence over the rest of the world.

Perhaps the biggest trend to come out of the Big Apple this September is the wet hair look.

The classic ‘90s hair style has already featured on Fall/Winter catwalks earlier this year and ties in perfectly with the ever-growing grunge influences in fashion. At New York Fashion Week, Phillip Lim, Prabal Gurung, Helmut Lang and Jason Wu all created their own take on the look, varying from centre-parted, low-slung ponytails with wet roots to a fierce comb-over fringe dividing locks that had been drenched almost down to the ends.

This trendy look is wonderfully easy to create: simply work a clear gel, like V5 Styling Gel Wet Look, from your roots down towards the mid-lengths of your hair and use a comb to set in whichever way you fancy.

Tousled loose waves were another big hair trend and spotted on catwalks including Diane von Furstenberg, Thakoon and Ruffian. Whether worn in a sophisticated side-parting and neat glossy waves or a roughed-up, beachy style, you can create the effect with BaByliss Thermo Ceramic Hair Rollers or the Glam Goddess Ionic Hot Air Magic Wand by Mark Hill Salon Professional.

The make-up product you do not want to miss next spring is a matte, bold lipstick. From cotton candy pink to coral and orange hues, eye-popping lips will be back next year. For a bright yet natural, stamped-on look we recommend Mac Lipstick in Vegas Volt.

Light, iridescent eyeshadow featured at the NYFW presentations of Altuzarra, Derek Lam and Phillip Lim, while lashes were kept either bare or coated with only a smidgen of natural looking mascara. To recreate the look, apply a blended layer of Art Deco’s Glam Stars Eyeshadow in white and add a subtle layer of Bare Minerals Flawless Definition Waterproof Mascara.

Flawless porcelain skin without a hint of blusher is another big trend that continues on from Fall/Winter and was spotted at Alexander Wang, Derek Lam and Rag & Bone with varying degrees of dewiness. To recreate the look, prepare skin with Smashbox’s Photo Finish Foundation Primer before applying Rimmel London’s Ever Matte foundation and taking off shine with Bobbi Brown’s Sheer Finish Loose Powder.
