Lorde understands why her style is labelled as “grumpy”.

The 17-year-old singer is known for her edgy and dark looks, which landed her a collaboration with cosmetics giant MAC. Explaining her taste in outfits, Lorde – real name Ella Yelich O’Connor – insisted she does like girly things too.

“There are a lot of expectations in this industry about looking a certain way and having a certain kind of appeal. I am feminine, but I really love dressing in boys’ clothes too. I guess that’s why I get labelled as ‘the grumpy girl,’ because I don’t play into that,” she told Teen Vogue magazine.

There is a behind-the-scenes video accompanying the photoshoot for the magazine, which took place in Austin, Texas. The curly-haired musician is seen posing for the cameras wearing an array of outfits, one of which is a colourful jacket seen on the front page.

Speaking to the camera, Lorde revealed the inspiration behind the theme of the pictures.

“I’m really excited; I actually wanted to shoot Teen Vogue for a long time… We based a lot of it on weird girls in music, which is good because obviously I’m a weirdo,” she grins. “We just tried to make beautiful, timeless photos that felt really classic. There’s a definite youth to it.”

Lorde also told the publication about her love of social networking. She finds the internet a great way to speak to her fans.

“I like Twitter because it’s a good direct link to people. You just reach out to someone you like and say, ‘Follow me please, and then we can talk.’ I really like Instagram as well. It’s a good one, very simple. I’m also on Facebook and Tumblr,” she added.
