What happens when you mash up fashion, art and photography together? That’s right, you’ll get L’ILE AUX ASHBY’s Pop Up store!
Debuting as a standalone pop-up store for the first time, L’ILE AUX ASHBY by Rayson Tan, pioneered as one of the most promising fashion label whose printed fabrics are a hit in Singapore, has curated a singular event at Glamour Inc Showroom yesterday, showcasing an exclusive preview to his Pre-Spring 2013 collection and his past collection of accessories and clutches- all very noteworthy and statement-making for fashionistas and fashionistos alike.
Started as an accessories label initially, L’ILE AUX ASHBY has cleverly introduced a range of printed apparels that were indeed derivatives of his accessories range at the Blueprint 2012 tradeshow earlier in May 2012 to a rave review, especially when fashion goers turned up at Audi Fashion Festival 2012 in his clothes and were snapped by numerous street photographers, both local and overseas, including the famed Tokyo-based street fashion photographer Rei Shito herself expressing her love for his prints!
And indeed, yesterday was one event where people who attended had a chance to see and pre-order his brand new Pre-Spring 2013 collection that consists of tops, dresses and new item- skirts made in 100% silk. The colours of this new range may not be as vibrant as the 2012 range, but they are absolutely ideal for those who are not so loud at heart, but would love to wear the prints in a subtle manner.
The statement-making sunnies from our favourite Henry Holland for Le Specs range at the pop-up store
The pop up store also features a selection of covetable sunnies from Henry Holland for Le Specs, and more notably, funky design collaborations from all walks of life, namely a series of street photography that highlights the brand’s clothing line by STREET PEEK x L’ILE AUX ASHBY, a fantastical series of digital fashion illustrations by HEAGE x L’ILE AUX ASHBY, a series of mixed media hand-drawn fashion illustrations that incorprates the prints from the brand by IZZIYANA SUHAIMI x L’ILE AUX ASHBY and a one-of-a-kind quirky nail art service that graphic-fies your nails by REBECCA CHUANG x L’ILE AUX ASHBY.
Of course, not forgetting a kooky graphic art exhibit by COUTURE TROOPERS x L’ILE AUX ASHBY that involves an explosion of our trooper robots in the premises of the showroom as well as surrounding the L’ILE AUX ASHBY’s mannequins. We even initiated a ‘Spot the trooper robots’ plan on our instagram for fun-sake! All thanks to our graphic designer, Zureena Wahap who has hand-drawn all these trooper robots.
And for this, we were both stoked and incredibly honoured to be the event’s Offical Online Media Partner, a collaborator of the brand, and not forgetting, the deejay of the day, with our choice of groovy tunes that get the crowd on their feet (think Lykke Li, When Saints Go Machine, Sia and Grimes, to name a few).

THE COLLABORATIONS:
HEAGE x L’ILE AUX ASHBY
HEAGE, an outstanding fashion illustrator, whose works have been featured in publications like the ‘Big Book of Fashion Illustration’ and “Imagemakers: Cutting-Edge Fashion Illustrations”, to name a few, are testaments of how fashion would look like in a digital age.
Weaving cleverly with L’ILE AUX ASHBY’s trademark prints (which are also created digitally), he presented a brilliant exhibition of 6 illustrations that feature some of the most innovative accessories from the fashion label at the pop-up store.
These illustrations are no doubt epitomies of a dreamy state, a sheer projection of fantasy at it’s best, almost surreal but still real. We have no doubt in saying that this exhibition is by far the most eyecatching collaboration at the pop-up yesterday. According to Heage, these illustrations were all done up within a month – an incredibly short time for such fine quality work – simply bravo!

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY BY STREETPEEK (JOHN TAN) x L’ILE AUX ASHBY
For those in the know, you may know street photographer John Tan as ‘The Singapore Sartorialist’ after his numerous captures in street photography during the recent Audi Fashion Festival 2012 as the event’s official street photographer. Scouring the streets of Singapore, his eye for stylist peeps have left many raving about it, inspiring him to create his very own photography blog, StreetPeek (he’s also an avid contributor to street style website, Poshism).
Joining forces with L’ILE AUX ASHBY, StreetPeek by John Tan presented an exhibition of street snaps of the ever-stylish Rana Wehbe -Flinter (Fashion blogger of Bonjour Singapore), Lenne Chai (Photographer of Aetienne) and Nathanael Ng (1/3 of fashion design label Mash-Up) strutting and modeling the garbs by L’ILE AUX ASHBY. In this series, different pieces were styled in different manner for different looks, resulting in what seems like a guide to wearing L’ILE AUX ASHBY’s designs for every day life. And what better way to do it than to shoot them at the streets of Tiong Bahru, the surrounding areas of the showroom for that sense of familarity.

FUNKY GRAPHIC NAIL ART BY REBECCA CHUANG x L’ILE AUX ASHBY
Take your pick of graphic nails inspired by L’ILE AUX ASHBY’s trademark graphic prints! How can anyone say no to that?
In line with the street photography collaboration, Secret Chamber Nails, a nail salon by Rebecca Chuang has incorporated her flair for creating magic on nails in both the street photography series, as well as at the pop store yesterday. A corner of the showroom was dedicated to this nail art service where guests and friends have the opportunity to have their nails painted in a graphical manners, with pre-selected nail art palettes conjured by Rebecca with direct inspiration from L’ILE AUX ASHBY’s prints.
.
MIXED MEDIA WOVEN FASHION ILLUSTRATION BY IZZIYANA SUHAIMI x L’ILE AUX ASHBY
Showcasing at the pop-up store yesterday is none other than Izziyana Suhaimi, a mixed-media fashion illustration artist whom we have featured in back in February 2012 (link), who was at the pop-up store yesterday to present her collaboration with L’ILE AUX ASHBY – a series of illustrations that were woven with threads and yarns that are of the actual L’ILE AUX ASHBY’s creations, namely the scarves and the bow ties. In her exhibit, evidential spuns of threads and yarns were placed around her illustrations which were all nicely framed up, all with the aim of infusing and translating Izziyana’s love for weaving.
Friends and guests who attended the pop-up store spoke nothing but praises for her beautiful display of illustrations, whose character’s style do resembles that of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo!
.
The crowd even before the store officially starts at 2pm – remarkable or what?

And of course, what’s a pop-up store without the guests, here are some photos of peeps who dropped by:
