Some Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Match.com:

Want to know what you’re getting into before you dive into a full-on membership with Match.com? We’ve provided some cool facts that you may not have known about Match.com and online dating in general:

While ‘through a friend’ is still the most common way people meet first dates, online dating comes a close second at 20%.

While 66% of people think it’s acceptable to kiss on the first date, only 22% think its acceptable to have sex.(I wish that they have separated these responses by gender. I wonder how much of that 22% was comprised of men).

48% of women research their date before the first date.

All of these facts are from this source.

A Little History on Match.com:

Funnily enough, Match.com didn’t start out with the goal of becoming the worlds top dating website. It was actually just a demonstration to prove that electronic classified ads could work for newspapers in 1993. When they realized it could be a viable internet business the team came up with a subscription model and worked on including a lot of diverse communities. Women were especially targeted, as the business manager felt that a high female membership would encourage men to sign up. Match.com was launched in early 1995 as a free beta, anybody who signed up during the beta was given a free lifetime charter membership.

In an interesting media and publicity stunt, the company retitled their director of communications as the ‘Vice President of Romance’. It worked, it netted them bookings on several talk shows, news shows, and coverage in publications such as the New York Times, People, and USA Today. The company was purchased twice, by Cendant in 1998 and by IAC in 1999.

These days the company is headquartered in Dallas, Texas and operates in 25 countries and 8 languages. It was recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest online dating site in the world in November of 2004, with more than 42 million registered users and 15 million active users worldwide. They also run Stir, a social dating application built to work in tandem with Facebook. Stir events take place in major cities and give Match.com users a chance to meet in person at local mixers. The events range from happy hours to cooking classes to outdoor activities such as rock climbing and snorkeling. Their website also offers two-player games designed to let you and your partner get to know each other while playing.

Around the Web:

Match.com on Facebook – Features posts from the Match.com blog, information on their Stir events (singles mixers), and photos of successful couples that met on Match.com.

Match.com on Twitter – Seems like a fair amount of Twitter users met their partners on Match.com and tweet them pictures. Also contest and event announcements.

Match.com on Instagram – Mostly pictures from their Stir events.

Match.com on Pinterest – Pictures and links on love, dating, style, and date ideas.
