Sometimes there just nothing like a good ole’ whodunnit. But in the case of ‘Buried Secrets’ by Irene Hannon , you find out early on whodunnit, but small town police chief Lisa Grant doesn’t know whodunnit. As a matter of fact, she’s not sure whose bones those are that popped up in her sleepy, little jurisdiction. Or how old they are. But like a dog with a particularly tasty bone, she’s determined to find out.

About the book: After seven years as a Chicago homicide detective, Lisa Grant has hit a wall. Ready for a kinder, gentler life, she takes a job as a small-town police chief. But then the discovery of a human skeleton by a construction crew at the edge of town brings her right back to detective ways. Unable to accomplish solving the crime with the

few resources the town has, Lisa calls for help.

Detective Mac McGregor, an ex-Navy SEAL, arrives on her doorstep, and as they work to solve the mystery behind the unmarked grave, danger begins to shadow them. Someone doesn’t want this dead person telling any tales–and will stop at nothing to make certain a life-shattering secret stays buried.

Although she’s an ex big-city homicide detective, the bucolic little town that she lives in now simply doesn’t have the resources that she’s accustomed to. But what it does have is ex Navy SEAL (of course) Mac McGregor, who is a detective that the county sends in to help. He helps alright. No, really, he does.

In a lot of books like these, girl meets boy and they hate each other right off the bat. Not so with Mac and Lisa. They did get off to a rocky start for about a hot minute. But it didn’t take long before sparks of a different kind started flying.

So they have a human skeleton and very little to go on to identify it. But fairly early in the story, they are successful in figuring out who this skeleton belonged to, and how this person died. Take a look at this photo. See something that doesn’t belong? Like jewelry? That’s a big hint. But far be it from me to give it away. And then they figure out who they “think” is the culprit, but proving it is going to be hard to do, and bodies keep turning up dead.

I love books that enlighten me, educate me, and encourage me; books that make me delve deep and think hard. But sometimes I just want to simply enjoy reading; just curl up with a soft blanket in my t-shirt and yoga pants (because I never use them for anything like yoga) and sink into a book with romance, mystery, chills and thrills. And books in which I don’t have to worry about vulgar language, graphic violence or sex.  ‘Buried Secrets’, is book #1 in the Men of Valor series, and it delivers on all counts. I can’t wait to read the next one in the series coming out next year. In the meantime, I’ll have to check out bestselling author Irene Hannon’s other great books!
