Senior Systems Engineer, Global IT Services – Infrastructure and Operations

Salary: Circa £33,000 depending on skills and experience
The IT Infrastructure and Operations team is responsible for the strategic planning, implementation, control, maintenance and audit of all IT Infrastructure and Operations provisions, to meet the organization requirements. This includes negotiation, implementation and monitoring of both internal and vendor related, service level agreements, and the ongoing management of IT operational products and services to provide the agreed levels of service, seeking continually and proactively to improve IT service delivery. The function is committed to providing scalable and flexible IT services and support to meet the growing demand of the organization and aims to deliver in an efficient and effective manner.
The role is highly specialized and technical role which understands the global IT Infrastructure environment and also the critical business processes which depend on the environment. The role is heavily involved in IT Infrastructure design, advisory and consultancy for projects requiring IT solutions. The senior engineer acts as a lead technical expert and liaises with the global IT team, project office and cross-department. Able to demonstrate the skills needed to handle innovation and change resulting from the implementation of new IT solutions. Shows the ability to delegate effectively to suitably skilled IT Infrastructure and Service Delivery staff and vendors to meet and adhere to IT Service Level Agreements (SLA). The Systems Engineer ensures reliable operation of all the global IB Infrastructure estate which core and critical IB business processes operate and rely on. The stability of the global infrastructure environment is essential for organizational success. The role ensures allocation of team resource to all operational work, to maintain stability and improvement, is completed in accordance with defined policy and process, and meets agreed SLAs.
This role will Provide 3rd level support for major incidents based on a 24×7 on-call schedule, requiring one week out of four to be on-call.
Responsibilities
Design, deliver and control complex IT global infrastructure solutions for all IB approved projects ensuring integration and alignment with existing infrastructure solutions and strategy. Define and oversee a project’s success criteria, end user interactions, processes, schedules, resources, and deliverables . Work on designing Proof of Concept initiatives to ensure appropriate technology innovation is investigated and then deployed following recommendation to IT Senior Management.
The role is heavily involved in IT Infrastructure design, advisory and consultancy for projects requiring IT solutions which includes:
Research and advisory services
Reports on technology trends
Industry, business and competitive intelligence gathering
Research from websites
Workshops and seminars on emerging technology
Scenario planning
Systems analysis and design
Conceptual modelling
Evaluation
Establishes and maintains IT systems development standards, methods and procedures to ensure IT Service excellence
Co-ordinates the establishment and operation of strategies for providing sufficient infrastructure capacity to meet organizational needs. Define and implement asset replacement programme
Responsible for project evaluation and design of Infrastructure requirements
Operational responsibility on corrective actions to ensure the IB remains operational from a technology perspective. This will include deciding on what should be fixed first, determine if a DR scenario exists, who needs to be communicated to or consulted, what resources are resolved to fix the issues (maybe a mix of internal and external resources, such as managed services).
Requirements
Educated to degree level or equivalent with professional IT certifications eg. VCP, RHCE, MSCE, etc. with at least 7 years’ experience in an infrastructure related role
Recent experience in an Infrastructure design/consultancy role
In depth knowledge of VMWare Enterprise server and desktop virtualization, Red Hat Enterprise Linux / Solaris, NetApp Storage Technologies, Windows Server 2000/2003/2008/2012, HP rack and blade systems, ITIL. These skills will be demonstrated through professional IT qualifications or equivalent experience gained
Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate technical issues to non-technical staff and senior management across the organization
Confident to influence and provide direction both to team members and cross IT functions
Ability to build key working relationships, both within the IT function and cross-departmentally, in particular on project work requiring Infrastructure design
Line management or mentorship experience
Familiar and demonstrable knowledge of organizational network performance standards, change management and service management processes, ITIL
Advanced problem solving skills, often working with multiple problems under severe time pressure. Highly Organized
Self-motivated and directed
Strategic Awareness – ability to keep overall Infrastructure and IT objectives and strategy in mind
Location
The posts will be classified as a UK Teleworker and will work between the following locations dependent on the required work schedule: UK Global Services Data Centre, UK Disaster Recovery Data Centre, IB Assessment Centre (Cardiff) and home.
