Some of the primary responsibilities of the SQL DBA  role would include owning, monitoring and resolving database related incidents and requests, fulfilling requests and resolving incidents within SLAs, reviewing service related information (e.g: performance data, database backups, maintenance, and capacity issues) on a daily basis to ensure service related issues are identified and resolved within established SLAs, responding to database related alerts and escalations and working with database engineering to develop strategic solutions to recurring problems.

 

 It is desired that the candidate take a proactive approach to their work. The MS SQL Server DBA role requires a service oriented mentality, high sense of ownership of the problems and requests assigned, focus on managing and resolving issues in alignment with the SLAs, establishing and maintaining communication with technology customers to keep them updated with status of their requests, initiating and performing changes on production systems and proactively escalating any issues that cannot be resolved within the established timeframes.   It is expected that the candidate be able to work off hours within maintenance windows and be on-call for critical issues.

Accountabilities, Responsibilities and Characteristics:

Ability to work as a team member and independently.

Provides consultation, leadership, and guidance as technical expert on Horace Mann databases, and related software to technical staff, management, and corporate information providers.

Performs highly complex review, design, development and maintenance of corporate databases.

Performs development, maintenance, and control of standard methods and procedures for data base(s) recovery, high availability, security, integrity and data privacy.

Performs measurement and tuning functions at the database level to facilitate optimum utilization of the Database Management Systems.

Provides effective written and verbal communication in a professional manner to management, customers, associates, and external resource personnel; including documentation of data, programming, unit standards, and procedures.

Knowledge, at the highest level of data management, data base concepts & facilities, computer software/systems, & IS Technology

Mastery of T-SQL language.  Knowledge of programming languages, and utilities a plus.

Mastery of MS Windows Server Operating System

Familiarity with business processing concepts

Job Requirements

Technical attributes required in order of importance:

In depth knowledge of SQL Server 2005 and 2008 including data migration, security, database maintenance, backup and restore, shrink,  database tuning and debugging, T-SQL.

Functional knowledge of Windows Server, including clustering, memory configuration tuning and debugging, storage components, DNS, DHCP.

Functional knowledge of SQL patching and testing

Highly skilled in troubleshooting and problem solving of SQL development process includes data integrity, performance issues, blocking and deadlocking, connectivity, security, CPU memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention issues

Strong knowledge of indexes, index management, integrity checks, configuration, patching. How statistics work, how indexes are stored, how they can be created and managed effectively

Responsible for ensuring availability and performance of the databases that support the system including,  performance tuning, query optimization, performance monitor, and SQL profiler

Responsible for improvement and maintenance of the databases to include rollout and upgrades

Function knowledge of resource governor.

Functional knowledge of Transparent Data Encryption

Functional knowledge of SSIS, SSRS and SSAS

Experienced in data modeling, E/R diagrams and model assessment

Experience in working with SQL in a virtual environment is a plus.

Requirements:

Relevant degree and 5-7 years IT experience with database management.
