Costa Rica Picture of the Day (August 15th, 2013) – Each day the Costa Rican Times will be including a picture from around Costa Rica to see the natural beauty and amazing things that we get to see each day in the land of the Pura Vida.
Coatis are part of the raccoon family and another common animal in Costa Rica because of the geographical environment. They are widely adaptive mammals and active animals day and night.
Like many raccoons, coatis can be nocturnal as a defense mechanism against animals but for the most part they spend their days searching for food. In Costa Rica it is easy to find them searching for food in places like Manuel Antonio and Arenal Volcano National Parks.
They are omnivores who prefer smaller portion of insects, eggs, vertebrates and fruits.
If you look at a coati you will notices it’s long tail and claws used to grasp and climb trees but they spend most of their time on the ground.
Female family units are often together in groups while males are solitary.
