A website is essentially a collection of files, such as Web pages, images, videos and other digital assets that anybody can access via the internet and viewed with a browser. Just as any type of content can be used in a website, virtually anybody can also create one of their own.

Creating a website is not as intimidating as it seems. Here is a step-by-step guide on

how to create your own website.

Preparation For your Website

Think of ideas for your website. Brainstorm and write down your ideas. The Internet may just be the most ideal place to turn even your most outlandish ideas into gold.

Identify the type of people you want your website to serve. It can serve the general public, such as Yahoo! and Google, or it may provide specific service and content, such as those owned by schools, businesses, and other private organizations.

Determine how much time and commitment you are willing to give your  website. You may need to put in more time to maintain your site if you plan to generate income from it. You have the choice of putting up either a content site, where you provide information and generate income from the traffic you receive from advertisements; or E-commerce site, which is essentially an online store.

If you don’t care about earning money out of your website, free Web hosting and random maintenance is enough to keeps it running.

Steps to Make a Website

1. Register a domain name.

A domain name is the address that people use to find your website on the Internet. It’s what you type in a browser’s address bar to go to a specific website, and essentially looks like this: mywebsite.com.

Register your domain name with a domain name registrar or hosting provider. This step requires you to simply check the availability of your preferred domain name and register it online. They are usually registered annually and you can often register it many years in advance.

2. Get a Web host.

A Web host is a company that makes your website available to the public 24/7. It has computers, called servers, hooked up to the Internet 24/7. These servers are assigned IP numbers so that other computers hooked up to the Internet may find them. It’s on these servers that websites or XHTML files, CSS files, Javagroups, or other digital files loaded on the Internet are stored. In turn, this is where your browser retrieves the data so it may load the Web page into your browser and allow you to view it.

Choose a Web host that has excellent support. Such support includes an online Web builder that teaches virtually anyone to create their own website.

Web hosts typically charge a fee for storing and serving up your Web

page. Web hosting may cost from $5 to many thousands per month, depending on the hosting plan.

3. Build the website

The easiest way to build a website is to use your Web host’s website builder. The hard way, but can be quite a fulfilling way, is to learn a mark up or programming language and build your website on your own.

HTML, or Hypertext Markup Language, is the predominant coding language used for describing web pages. It’s incredibly easy to learn as HTML files simply rely on mark up tags to describe how the text should be displayed.

XHTML, or eXtensible HyperText Markup Language, is the new Web coding language set by the W3C. It’s written exactly as HTML with a few minor changes in its codes.

CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, provides more flexibility in designing the HTML or XHTML.

JavaScript, a browser sided scripting language, makes your Web page interactive.

VB Script, a server-sided scripting language, can make things on your Web page move. It can also be used to create forums.

Hire a professional to design your website for you. This option is most ideal for someone who wants to put up an e-commerce website.

4. Upload your website

Upload your website to your Web server or to a public FTP server.

Do a usability test to check if everything is functioning properly.
