If you wonder how the models always look so great on the ramp at all times – with perfectly smooth skin, great bone structure, flawless legs and perfectly hydrated lips – this post will tell you the secret! While models do have great bodies and well cared for skin, you do need something extra to look that great on the ramp and in photos! Here are 5 secrets I discovered while covering backstage beauty as Lakme’s Official Beauty Blogger this season  ~

1. Powder, Powder, Powder!

A lot of powder is used to set the base and to control shine – especially on the T-zone. Under the harsh lighting of the runway and with hundreds of camera flashes directed at you, the face can easily look greasy. A whole army of assistants stand with powders and fluffy brushes to touch up the models’ faces right before they step on to the ramp. To add dewiness to the face, powder highlighters are used instead of cream/liquid ones.

2. Smooth Hydrated Lips

You’d never find models with dry/chapped looking lips! Whether the look requires a matte lip or creamy/glossy one, a layer of lip gloss is applied to the lips when the makeup is done and the lip blotted (if the look is matte lip) right before they step on to the ramp. The result is super smooth hydrated lips at all times!

3. False Lashes

Makeup artists almost ways use false lashes, even for the softer looks. The only time I’ve seen false lashes not being used was for Gaurang’s show where the look was a very natural, village-girl look. Apart from that, false lashes are used for every show. Each model is assigned a pair of lashes and they’ve to take them off after every show and get them fixed again before the next show!

4. Bronzed, glowing skin!

One of the last things that is done before a model steps on to the ramp is body highlighting! Once the model has changed into the outfit she is wearing on the ramp, 2-3 assistants with giant powder  brushes apply bronze/golden highlighting powder on all exposed parts of the body – arms, legs, neck, decolletage, midriff, back, shoulders and even the ears. Every inch of skin that shows through is highlighted! Most models do have good skin but that extra touch is needed to make the skin look great in photos.

5. Contouring!

Contouring and chiseling the face is super important when you are being photographed. Without that the face can look quite flat on camera. While most models are blessed with good bone structure, a sweep of contouring powder under the jawline, under the cheekbones and on the sides of the nose enhances the natural contours of the face.
