Hey PSA @ people who wear body jewelry/captive barbells etc

DONT BUY “BODY METAL/RAGE” BRAND EARRINGS FROM SPENCERS!!!

I’ve been wearing these for little under a week and I couldn’t understand why my ears were getting infected again and again, turns out these earrings are super cheap (tho they’re bein sold expensive!) and the paint has been pealing off on my earholes the whole time!!

So far I haven’t been too hurt by this but this could really be a problem for some people esp since I don’t know what exactly is in the paint!

What’s worse is the type I’m wearing was advertized as SNAKE BITES so this woulda come off in some poor persons mouth!!

Please stay safe and DO NOT BUY THESE!!

Edit: a pic the earrings after removing them

Seriously. Stay the fuck away from this brand.

Spencer’s jewelry is a literal nightmare.

Please everyone, Anatometal brand captive bead rings (link, link, link) are not that expensive (~$9 each) and they are made to last for YEARS. The coating is essentially PART of the metal, so while it may fade slightly with wear, it is not harmful and will not flake off. They’re also the same grade titanium they used in joint replacements etc so you will not be allergic to them!!

Psa: Hot Topic is even worse

Please get surgical grade jewelry and stop buying $5 plastic from these mall death traps.

Love yourself.

cheap jewelry is made out of nickel and steel, which your skin will likely develop an allergy to and you’ll suffer from contact dermatitis, even if there’s no paint chipping off.

Your best bets are implant grade titanium, implant grade surgical steel, or solid gold. Certain polymers are acceptable in HEALED piercings only. Piercers and manufacturers anodize their metals, so the color is an actual chemical reaction that causes the metal itself to become that color. The color may fade with time but it’s perfectly acceptable.

Quality jewelry is usually only sold in piercing shops and sometimes online, if you’re careful. If a piercer carries anything of lower quality than what I listed, then don’t get pierced by them. They’re not interested in the well being of your piercings, so look for someone who is.

PLEASE NOTE: TITANIUM DOESN’T COME IN BLACK OR BRIGHT RED, THESE COLOURS CAN’T BE ANODISED. If a seller claims black or red jewellery is ti, this means they have a coating. As said above, anodisation happens to the metal itself, not to an extra layer.

Titanium, titanium, get it while it’s hypoallergenic! In the US, the APP (the Association of Professional Piercers) installs primarily titanium in fresh piercings, although certain types of glass, plus 18k gold are used, too.

Preferrably, you’d go to your local [APP member], so they could get you the perfect size jewellery and install it for you, too. Find out if a piercer outside the US carries Anatometal by looking it up [on their website].

APP members often have the names of the brands they carry on display. Good brands to look for, besides Anatometal; Industrial Strength, Neometal, Body Vision Los Angeles, Body Gems, Venus by Maria Tash, when it comes to metals to wear in your holes.

Meanwhile… You know what’s even easier to wear than a BCR?

A CLICK RING! Originally made as septum jewellery, they’re super handy for a great many piercings in your ears, too! The come in very basic titanium, up to solid 18k gold.

Find some examples [here] [here] [here]. Again, if you can, get them at your local APP member, they need to make a living, too!
