Dubai said it would construct a small office building using a 3D printer for the first time, in a drive to develop technology that would cut costs and save time as the city grows.

3D printing, which uses a printer to make three-dimensional objects from a digital design, is taking off in manufacturing industries around the world but has so far been used little in construction.

The project will be handled by WinSun Global, a Chinese firm that has already used 3D printing in several construction projects.

The finished product is expected to be a small complex of several 2,000 square foot multi-use buildings. The fully usable office will serve as the temporary headquarters for staff from the emirate’s Museum of the Future, that was launched earlier this year by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai.

A 20-foot tall 3D printer will be used to print the office that will then be assembled on site in a few weeks. Interior furniture and structural components would also be built through 3D printing with reinforced concrete, gypsum reinforced with glass fiber, and plastic.

There was no date specified for Dubai’s 3D office building but as per plans the Museum of the Future is to open in 2017 in the Emirates Towers area near Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai.
