EPA accidently releases water; Durango residents warned to cut back on water use as health officials evaluate river

About 1 million gallons of mine wastewater spilled into a tributary of the Animas River in San Juan County, threatening water quality and prompting warnings to agricultural and recreational water users on Thursday.

Health and environmental officials are evaluating the river, and officials say the mine water is acidic and contains high levels of sediment and metals.

Photos from the area showed the river’s waters turned a thick, dark orange.

The water was released Wednesday as the Environmental Protection Agency was investigating contamination at the Gold King Mine. The Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining and Safety said they had been in the area in recent days.

An iconic piece of the local coffee scene is now part of the Luna Gourmet Coffee & Tea Company, which has acquired Boyer’s Coffee brand, buildings, assets and land.

Luna Gourmet will continue roasting Boyer’s Coffee in the 1927 schoolhouse at 73rd and Washington, where it has relocated its campus.

“It’s a slice of Americana, in terms of what coffee is,” said Jason Barrow, who co-owns Luna Gourmet with his brother, Douglass Barrow. “They were roasting coffee there in the early ’70s, and before that, Bill was roasting out of his garage.”

Bill Boyer started Boyer’s Coffee in 1965, and built the brand on the reputation of small-batch coffees using only 100 percent Arabic coffee beans.

For the first time in more than a decade, a Denver jury is deliberating a case in which a guilty verdict could mean execution for the defendant.

Dexter Lewis is accused of killing five people at a Denver bar in 2012. And in their closing arguments Wednesday, prosecutors painted the picture of a man without conscience who butchered the victims and bragged about it afterward. Defense attorneys argued that that characterization — and much of the prosecution’s case — is built on flawed testimony from flawed witnesses.

Denver County prosecutors have not sought the death penalty since 2001. Meanwhile, an Arapahoe County jury is contemplating a death sentence in the 2012 Aurora theater shooting case.
