The Florida BJJ scene has just been boosted with the arrival of one of Rio de Janeiro’s top jiu-jitsu instructors. Rafael ‘Gordinho’ Lima is a fourth degree black belt the famous Gracie Barra academy in Brazil.
Coming from Brazil to teach BJJ in Pembroke Pines FL, Prof Rafael was one of the top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors in the world. He has won prestigious titles such as World Champion in 1998, 4x National Champion (94/95/96/97) and 4x National Champion by Teams (95/96/98/2000), Rio State Champion in 2003 and also Champion of the 1st Challenge Brazil x USA in 2003, among many others. He has also competed in other major events such as the Pan-Ams, ADCC and the Professional Jiu-Jitsu League.
Before founding the new gym Start Jiu-Jitsu in Pembroke Pines, Gordinho spent years teaching and managing top BJJ Gyms such as the Renzo Gracie academy in NYC and Evolve in Singapore. This new BJJ gym in Pembroke Pines, FL will be a sister academy to Gordo Jiu-jitsu in Rio de Janeiro.
Professor Rafael started BJJ back when he was only thirteen years old, influenced by good friend Ryan Gracie (RIP) and older brother Roberto “Gordo”, the man who developed the modern half-guard game in Jiu-Jitsu. He had the chance to learn directly from some legendary Gracie Barra instructors such as Jose Henrique (“Ze Beleza”), Jean Jacques Machado and Master Carlos Gracie Jr.
