Preparing a Successful College Audition

Goodspeed’s Audition Master Class is a one day workshop with Brent Wagner, the Chair of the acclaimed Musical Theatre Department at the University of Michigan. Professor Wagner will guide high school students in all aspects of song performance, including analyzing music and lyrics, acting the song, selecting and preparing the music, and understanding audition techniques. Each student will present two songs and will work individually with Professor Wagner. Participants will gain a valuable set of audition tools and techniques for their future in musical theatre. The program will also include an optional session, “Exploring College Musical Theatre Programs,” for parents and students.

With your application, please send a deposit of $75 in the form of a check payable to “The Goodspeed Opera House Foundation.” If you prefer to pay by credit card, please contact Kate Micari at 860.873.8664, x373. (If you are not accepted, your deposit will be refunded in full. If you are accepted, your deposit will be deducted from your total tuition. In all other cases, the tuition payment is non-refundable.)

2015 Program Description

• One-on-one song coaching

• Introduction to the college audition process

• Tips about essential audition techniques

• Exposure to all aspects of song performance

• Optional informational session and Q & A for parents and students

• The opportunity to see Goodspeed’s production of A Wonderful Life

Participants should prepare two 16-bar audition songs with the accompaniment clearly marked (title, key signature and time signature prominent) with a 2 or 4-bar introduction. The songs may be from any period. Participants should dress as they would for a college audition. (Note: Applicants should be equally comfortable with both songs).

In addition, Prof. Wagner will present a talk for parents and students, “Exploring College Musical Theatre Programs,” from 4:30 pm to 6 pm on Saturday, October 24. Prof. Wagner will share essential tools for understanding the college process, with a list of recommendations and guidelines. Master Class participants are not required to attend this session, though it is strongly recommended for high school juniors and seniors. This session will be completed by 6:00 pm.

Participants and their families can purchase tickets to attend the 8:00pm performance of A Wonderful Life on Saturday at the Goodspeed Opera House. If you are interested in obtaining tickets, please call Goodspeed’s box office at 860.873.8668.

Teaching Artist

BRENT WAGNER is the Chair of the Musical Theatre Department at The University of Michigan. Before joining the Michigan faculty in 1984, he started the musical theatre program at Syracuse University. Professor Wagner has directed musicals and revues throughout North America, from off-Broadway in New York to the Banff Center in Alberta, Canada. He has collaborated with the Tony Award-winning lyricist Sheldon Harnick on numerous projects, including the world premiere of A Wonderful Life (music by Joe Raposo). Among his many responsibilities, Professor Wagner directs the Senior Showcase, which is presented annually in New York City. Professor Wagner is the recipient of an Arthur Thurnau Professorship, an award for outstanding contributions to undergraduate education.
