Vote in the SIAM Elections!
SIAM will elect three members to serve on the SIAM Board of Trustees and four members to serve on the SIAM Council this fall. Be sure to make your voice heard on who will make important decisions for the organization by voting! Take a few minutes to read the candidate profiles and statements here: http://www.siam.org/election/election_info.php. On September 2, look for an e-mail message from the “SIAM Election Coordinator” (support@votenet.com) with your unique voting credentials and link to the voting site. To ensure the message delivers to your inbox, you may wish to “white list” your spam filter to accept the above e-mail address (support@votenet.com). For anyone who has opted out of receiving e-mails, a paper ballot will be mailed to your address of record. Questions regarding the election process can be directed to SIAM Executive Director James Crowley, c/o the SIAM Election Manager at election@siam.org.
Annual reports outline progress
SIAM grows and changes each year, in terms of membership, revenue, books and journals, prize funds, student travel awards, activity groups, student chapters and geographic reach. Read details on SIAM’s progress in the past year by viewing the annual and financial reports presented at the Annual Meeting last month.
SIAM News gets a makeover!
The newsjournal of the applied mathematics community has a newly revamped website! The online version features all the editorial content that appears in the print version of SIAM News in a modern web-based format. Readers now have a choice between reading the newsletter in the paper format, or viewing it completely online. The new site is accessible on any platform from a desktop computer to a mobile device.

Nugget Bytes: Math and movement
Math helps study transmission and movement, be it of cells, organisms, or disease. The latest Nugget Bytes shed light on mathematical models that are used to analyze cell migration in cancer and tumor growth, dispersal of organisms leading to patterns in population distribution, and disease dynamics of the Bluetongue virus. The first paper describes cell invasion through directional outgrowth or movement in the context of malignant tumors, in particular, melanoma or skin cancer. In the paper on species dispersal, authors propose a continuous-time and continuous-space reaction diffusion model where species move upward along their fitness gradients. The final paper, on Bluetongue virus, models disease persistence of the virus using a system of several delay differential equations.

New SIAM Books
Lectures on Stochastic Programming: Modeling and Theory, Second Edition
Alexander Shapiro, Darinka Dentcheva, and Andrzej Ruszczński
Optimization problems involving stochastic models occur in almost all areas of science and engineering, such as telecommunications, medicine, and finance. Their existence compels a need for rigorous ways of formulating, analyzing, and solving such problems. This book focuses on optimization problems involving uncertain parameters and covers the theoretical foundations and recent advances in areas where stochastic models are available.

Iterative Methods for Linear Systems: Theory and Applications
Maxim A. Olshanskii and Eugene E. Tyrtyshnikov
Iterative Methods for Linear Systems offers a mathematically rigorous introduction to fundamental iterative methods for systems of linear algebraic equations. The book distinguishes itself from other texts on the topic by providing a straightforward yet comprehensive analysis of the Krylov subspace methods, approaching the development and analysis of algorithms from various algorithmic and mathematical perspectives, and going beyond the standard description of iterative methods by connecting them in a natural way to the idea of preconditioning.
