Galway Bay fm newsroom – Over 3 thousand Leaving Cert students will receive their results throughout the city and county this morning.

2, 928 students sat the Leaving Cert in Galway in June, while a further 95 students sat the Leaving Cert Applied.

Galway had the third highest number of students sitting the exam behind Cork and Dublin.

Nationally, almost 57 thousand students sat the Leaving Cert exams this year, an increase of two and a half percent on the figure for last year.

Subjects which saw significant increases in students sitting the exams included Physics with an 11 percent increase and Spanish with a 9% increase.

There was also an increase in the number of students taking higher level Maths, with 27% of students sitting papers compared to 16% in 2011.

A helpline operated by the National Parents Council to provide information and advice to students and parents will be available today on 1800 265 165.

Speaking to Galway Bay FM news, Minister for Education Jan O’ Sullivan says it’s an exciting time for young people.
