Agoura Hills’s teens now have many new recreational and educational opportunities to choose from as well as their own membership “hang out” space. The Agoura Hills Department of Community Services announced a lineup of new community recreational and educational activities geared toward teens ages 10 to 14. Many of the programs are centered at the teen “Garage” located inside the Agoura Hills Recreation and Event Center, which opened earlier this year. Working with the community’s Teen Advisory Committee comprised of student representatives, the city’s recreation department has developed a variety of new programs which includes a membership club for ‘tweens and young teens.
The new Garage Membership program will have a special “license” for access to and to take part in activities inside the Garage, an indoor/ outdoor teen space that features a lounge, foosball, and video games. The city is giving free membership for the rest of 2015 and then a nominal $10 annual fee will be charged beginning January 2016. Membership will include access to the “Pit Stop,”organized times for teens to gather with friends in the Garage on Friday nights during the school year and from 1-5 p.m. Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays during the summer. Membership will also include a quarterly newsletter called the “Owners Manual.”
For summer break, the city is also launching a “Get Out and Get Busy” campaign offering daytime and evening activities geared toward 10-14 year olds. Friday Night Out excursions feature a School’s Out Party, Kanan Food Crawl and Scavenger Hunt. In addition to the weekday beach bus, organized daytime excursions will chauffeur teens to customized, summer fun around Los Angeles and Ventura, Tuesdays & Thursdays, from 6/16 – 8/13, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fee for excursions is $45 per day or 10 trips for $400. Enrichment classes being offered over the summer include academics, the arts, first aid, babysitting and volunteering.
The new programs, excursions, classes and Garage membership details are listed in the Agoura Hills Summer Recreation Program Guide, which is mailed to all Agoura Hills residents or available at the Recreation and Event Center, City Hall, Library and other locations throughout Agoura Hills.
The new teen programs and the Garage dedicated teen space accomplish a longtime goal of the community’s to offer a fun, enriching, dedicated and safe environment for middle and high school kids. “These new programs were designed by teens for teens and we’re excited to bring them just in time for summer,” said Amy Brink, director of community services for Agoura Hills.
