The New Zealand Warriors and Canberra Raiders head into Round 9 with just three wins apiece, but sit at opposite ends of the form spectrum based on their last performances. Travelling to Auckland is not usually the Raiders’ forte, but the Warriors have an Eden Park hoodoo to contend with.

Konrad Hurrell returns to the Warriors’ starting side despite this week’s video scandal; Ngani Laumape shifts out to the wing for injured rookie David Fusitua. Chad Townsend is retained at five-eighth with Thomas Leuluai still battling injury, while Ben Matulino returns from suspension and recent Test debutant Siliva Havili drops off the bench. Kevin Locke has been named as 18th man after making a strong comeback via the NSW Cup over the last fortnight. Paul Vaughan and Dane Tilse move into the starting pack for Canberra, with Josh Papalii and David Shillington dropping back to the bench. Shannon Boyd is out for the Raiders due to a sternum injury and is replaced by fellow tyro Kyle O’Donnell.

Canberra has won three of its last four and eight of its last 13 encounters with the Warriors, while the last four matches in Auckland have been shared two apiece. The Raiders recent success over the Warriors has taken the overall tally to 17-13 in their favour, while they prevailed in the only previous clash in New Zealand away from Mt Smart – 18-10 in Wellington in 2003. Canberra won 20-16 at home in Round 6 last year after a spectacular capitulation by the Warriors, who turned the tables in Round 25 with a devastating 50-16 result in Auckland. The Warriors are still searching for their maiden victory at Eden Park, winless in five previous visits.

Since Andrew McFadden replaced the axed Matt Elliott as coach, the Warriors have recorded two patchy but hard-fought losses to Canterbury and St George Illawarra, and a stoic Anzac Day triumph in Melbourne. The 16-10 defeat of the Storm featured glimpses of trademark attacking flash, but the most satisfying characteristic was a defensive steel rarely seen from the club since Ivan Cleary departed. Canberra is perhaps the only side in the NRL that supersedes the Warriors in the enigmatic stakes, following up a stunning last-gasp defeat of Melbourne with a deplorable 54-18 loss to Manly. The defensive ineptitude in allowing the Sea Eagles to run up a 42-0 scoreline after 30 minutes was astounding, while coach Ricky Stuart’s bizarre post-match acceptance of the blame indicates the problems in the capital run much deeper than a commitment to tackling.
