of scientific documentation. Over the past twenty years or so, omega-3 rich fish oil has been found to combat a host of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, kidney disease, breast cancer, osteoporosis and asthma.

Omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) fatty acids help prevent cardiovascular disease by reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol and increasing HDl (good) cholesterol, as well as reducing harmful triglycerides. Omega-3 fish oil also helps lower blood pressure and inflammation that could damage blood vessels leading to the heart.

That’s why the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health recommend everyone eat omega-3 rich fish (salmon, sardines, tuna) at least twice a week or take good quality fish oil supplements on a daily basis.

Higher dietary intakes of fish oil also helps reduce the risk of breast cancer in women by 14%, according to Chinese research published in the British Medical Journal. Once again, EPA and DHA fatty acids are the primary healthy nutrients present in fish oil.

Healthier kidneys are another benefit of omega-3 fish oil. In a study published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, researchers found long term fish oil consumption restored kidney functioning in 85% of the participants in an eight year study.

And osteoporosis, a bone disease that affects 50% of women and 20% of men over the age of 50, can be prevented by taking  4 grams of fish oil daily, according to the International Osteoporosis Foundation. Omega-3 EPA and DHA have been positively associated with the body’s ability to absorb an increased amount of essential bone-building calcium.

And a study conducted by the University of Indiana School of Public Health found fish oil improved lung functioning and decreased airway inflammation in patients who suffered from exercise-induced asthma. The researchers also found fish oil improved the athletic performance of participants in the study.

Don’t you think it might be time you start eating more salmon or taking high quality fish oil supplements on a daily basis?
