The Televerse #236- The 100’s “Thirteen” and Traumatic TV Character Deaths with Mo Ryan:

moryan:

Hi there. It’s Mo Ryan, TV critic for Variety. I wrote about the episode of The 100 titled “Thirteen” last week, and I said then that my views were evolving. I’ve been fortunate enough to read many pieces by viewers of the show in the last week, especially many by eloquent lesbian and bisexual fans, and I want to thank them all for their wisdom. This Televerse podcast with Noel Kirkpatrick and Kate Kulzick was recorded exactly one week after “Thirteen” aired, and it reflects where my views on the episodes stand at this time.

I think it may be of value, possibly, to viewers or former viewers of the show (the relevant podcast is halfway down the page). Noel, Kate and I talk about the episode in light of other deaths on other TV shows, and we try to place what happened on The 100 in context when it comes to TV as a whole and how writers’ rooms operate. We also talked about the season as a whole and the reaction to the episode.

I’ve read dozens of really good pieces about the show in the last week, and this essay by Elizabeth Bridges really stood out – and I mention it in the podcast.

Thanks to everyone from various parts of the fandom who tweeted with me or wrote something about the episode or otherwise communicated with me or with the world during this very difficult week. I’ve learned so much from you all. You inspire me. Please take care of yourselves. Peggy Carter of Agent Carter said something once that became a saying in that fandom – “I know my value.”

To the gay, lesbian, bi, queer, trans and questioning members of the 100 community, I know your value. It’s infinite.

Your eloquence and passion and your willingness to take care of each other is beautiful. May we meet again.
