Comcastro blogger Daniel Smith leads a conversation reflecting on all of the super heroes in present times. He leans heavily on today’s comic book explosion and transitions into the treatment of veterans, the most fan-engaging celebrities of Dragoncon, the personality cult of Coach Paul Johnson, and the arrival of the Atlanta Hawks. The conversation goes everywhere: from controversy in sports to the cost of being at the top, to politics, the Mcconaissance, football vs rugby, independent film, the return of Shaq-Fu, career reinvention, constitutional law, the bipolar history of comic book adaptation, and the epic triumphs and failures of comic books in film. Daniel is the greatest of all superfans. Nerds of the world, this one’s for you.

It’s because those entire style was that there is no stuff it’s a very Eastern ideas like the flow is low because you could never adapt. So if your throw punches or kicks if you throw kicks is going to bite you. I mean he literally he actually said that he was like a wrestler Greco-Roman wrestling like what would you do if I got you into this position in a real fight because like I said oh yeah that’s a bit weird position. People come Castro Viva La Tourette Lucio Maximus clear. Matthew queen just getting over sign inspection sorry I’ve been sick for the past little while and I’m just getting over trying to use the word sky in it for those of you been to the website ever. You might notice that it’s looking a little better hopefully by the time this one hits the web site will actually have an ad on it so we can make a dollar off of this but you know what we’re not goofing around any further. Get married to my friend Daniel Smith and if we are in this point one course a woman’s we’ve hung out several times and it was one of our earliest guests. Now Yeah actually it’s weird how these things come out. So here’s a little behind the scenes the way it works is if someone comes and they need to promote something yeah they’re going to come up real quick faster. That’s the fast track and Daniel came in a while ago when we were first started more or less artistic and single and he was like Cher. Yeah. From several different issue just like this from conversations with Kristen and Steve Steve Steve it was great. Crystal was great. Daniel’s great seeing you. Daniel Here’s a little preview coming attractions. He likes all the same shit you know so that’s that’s really what Daniel was a talker. He loves college football. He knows a lot about the hocks of those comic books video games get get ready for some popcorn This is more Jackie Chan and less gruesomely Yeah I like that. So without any further ado I mean I think you guys should go to the guys that we do this podcast for the Rectory bottomless microphones and when you stand here and hold them the entire time. And when someone says something awesome we just do this but we’re doing the Freddie Mercury pose right there as it as if we’re black and just won the Nazi Olympics. That’s actually the identical pose. Yes even though there are statues of Freddie Mercury right there to exact. Oh yeah yeah yeah he stole it from them. It’s just universal symbol of triumph you know just being awesome. Well you know you think that if Freddie Mercury had been an actor who had just stolen every scene he could yes Leslie like Adam West and if you ever see the documentary on the original Batman and Wes put any windows in the lines but he was clever and he will like weave them so you couldn’t edit them out. He like would say something maybe a little provocative but he moved really quickly in the next line and changes his cadence so you couldn’t splice the things that would change is insanity was like a plan the entire time. Yeah yeah. Adam West and Adam West actually a genius you just sanity is a thing. Well I mean no it doesn’t make sense to magically for Bruce Wayne to be kind of a nut job and then it turns out that by night he’s a vigilante and I think he would make more sense of Bruce Wayne was like some paranoid guy who was all like I don’t know what’s the opposite of Batman The Joker. Are they the same. All I forgot where I saw this it was he was on the internet so I mean it’s got to be of course was written by you know by someone who knows. What’s going on but it was like Batman and The Joker and it was like in the future and he’s like trying to the joke was like fall in love a blend and that means like trying to hold on to him but it turns out the joke wasn’t there at all and that he killed the Joker years ago but he’s been like imagining the Joker the whole time and he became kind of became a joke with all those awful things that mean was doing them anyway and then you fantasize yourself catching the Joker and stuff and I was like wow it’s gotten it’s got darker and darker it’s got a stark reference there is funny and it’s like no one knows you better than your rival you know like there’s no one who you study more you know like there’s a it’s a borderline session when it comes like we can use GA do actually we should talk about this during the. Because I know a lot more about Georgia for either Ira. Oh OK cool. You know we’ve been recordings. Well yeah OK well yes you can at this I mean like an asshole one of the other one away because asshole is asshole give me a dollar in your jar for like we’re going to set that up eventually as soon as there’s a charity page they’ll be ajar and if it’s like only applies to you don’t just point to you when we want to talk about oh OK sounds like you just film of like I’ll do your cursing some give or take a swear word at some point to point at you and your charity of choice will be given kitchen with local three and fucker fucker for a hard worker Good luck fucker long and that was twenty dollars for me. Yeah. Max’s father will have to slow that wind down figure out how much goes into the how much do exactly. Oh yeah you’re going to the rival thing it’s interesting. Everyone if you have a rival It’s I think the quintessential rival in Venice he’s always been like the Green Goblin Spider Man deal because it was never about the Green Goblin Spider Man it was always Norman Osborn Peter Parker he hated Peter Parker and he inspired me and I was Peter Parker and then he made it his mission to like destroy Peter Parker’s life and when you when you think about amazing Sparano and what it was I mean honestly Peter does not have it easy. Well Spiderman has got. People like all bad man lost his pants. OK He lost two people. Peter Parker lost his parents under questionable circumstances because we don’t know which story actually counts best movie but one where his parish has disappeared. Parents were CIA operatives in during the ninety’s. All within sometimes a shield operatives and others left and so we had to be rebooted one more time I think they’re not going to do it and they’re going to jump in because we know the damn story at this point I mean clearly a soft it’ll be like a hole in a soft reboot and others can I just be like Abbott I mean what more do you need to know they actually song and climbs they actually acknowledge those first two hot movies as being canon and a second Hope movie wasn’t actually that that is just Ang Lee dug such a deep latrine for that first movie there was no getting out of it you know that movie with Edward Norton acted his ass off. Norton This is a great job in that movie it was like he did the same wonderful job or Ben but he came out of an English ship latrine and there was no saving that movie there was no saving it. I do love flows. Performance it’s interesting. Here’s my take on reforms of the Hawke what makes the hoax a last minute then yours is that it’s not a movie about the whole the problem with a movie about the hawk is there is this part where he’s trying not to be all that actually becomes Hawk Hawk smash Let’s all hope really does for like an hour and a half of the original Hulk movie the running around breaking stuff for like ninety minutes and if you can accept music as he turns to hitchhike down the road. Yes you couldn’t get so much as a clown car pulls up and spit out and then shove the hawk into the clown car and looking behind and they drive off. Yeah contrast is like that the corpses of murdered clouds rolling up the corpse of a murdered hope you’re like oh my god those clowns they were all Oh God I don’t know I’m the one thing that could destroy the Hulk. Laughter When you have Stephen King on his back and someday make sure you pitch the idea of a whole bunch of small clowns. All it’s murdering the whole I think it was so good. My brother’s favorite Stephen King book by far is the stand which is probably my second favorite but it ever just like so many different reasons. Like it really resonated with me. I mean like what you know watching the kids you know grow up like way too fast having to deal with this like extra dimensional monster that becomes your deepest fears and then it’s really insidious that it prefers to deal with children because you know adults have fears but our fears are complicated our fears are like bankruptcy dying alone. Yeah that’s hard to personify but for a kid who just saw the money you can turn into a money like real easy and like you know suck it so loud it’s like magic is still real for kids that remain still real for kids still real it’s like the more sort of the status of magic something stop trying to crush my dreams. Right so. So here’s my thing I’m Peter Parker This man has lost his parents his uncle and by the way Uncle Ben always dies that’s like the no matter how you reboot that Batman’s parents always Uncle Ben’s parents always die Krypton he would Krypton not blown up or not know about it. Ben’s always been Bruce Wayne’s parents are always dead. Those tragedies are constant like fixed points in time if you’re a Dr Who fan origin stories. Yeah so that’s common here origin special I’m sure when Martin Sheen was like Spiderman Uncle Ben crap. Yeah I got a free weekend. Well watch like Luke Skywalker is one scene of the new Star Wars being him dying and telling his son No don’t follow in my footsteps and that is fucking cross just like I want to go and watch it watch watch Mark Hamill’s one scene in Star Wars be an in-depth dissertation I met a Korean. Well it turns out after we we took a course we found all these books that explain how to figure out it was a general and it turns out yeah there’s a blood test for this so yes you are you hon it turns out that you you do have a relatively high level of unicorns. You also have syphilis. Oh it’s hard console it was. You’re getting around before you met Lee and stuff you know flying around I’m sure he was faithful to or after the marriage. Like there’s there’s no question are going well. Is there even a man who does not even care anymore. It’s likely that she’s going to land at this point. And I’ve heard of her for stars opposite side and she’s going to be queen like Queen of the asteroid belt. Yeah yeah well she’s queen of the rebellion. I mean I’m not sure if it’s more of the viva la Revolution let’s establish the monarchy. OK I mean Lord Of The Rings is where I am I don’t know that the emperor. Now what sort of a monarchy quick he did it because it was he was far too damaging for any other acting like monarchies are bad I mean like I don’t know if I was never married if that’s all I’m getting out of your pocket you’re talking about how one of the most important things about getting Star Wars understanding all the democracy work and you know if there’s one thing absurd one needed was just more sort of procedural rules no no no and like I forgot where I read this but some were saying you know what I’m when I’m an adult my kids are watching the them in the order they came out because of my kids first memories of Star Wars are talking about trade shows and five minutes later Jar Jar Binks shows up. They’re never going to forgive me. Yeah. But but but the government is an important aspect of Star Wars because you kind of see property manipulate everything and you know it occurred to me the other day Palpatine basically pulled a house of cards whenever I would start a wash and season three of house of cards yet but these guys are about to just blow like all the spoilers at the door don’t don’t don’t I don’t spoil any other spoil everything Frank I know it has forced powers the actual age I choked his wife at one point he dies and resurrection brings on the rapture before shopping’s probably involve the three way with his wife his bodyguard can you I don’t want to hear any more Frank Underwood gay stories like I’m sorry like him and he just shows you the rewards of loyalty. Anyway so you’re saying Palpatine as a get out Frank Underwood he manipulated the system you know to kill some people just like Frankie Frankie you did and yeah. And I can Doug Stamper. I mean Darth Vader is he actually has like a cat in the expanding universe. He has his own castle like lake actually several castles yet like Castle I think is what it’s called. He’s got one of course and he has like a couple other strongholds and are all like really cool is so like when I was this is dark Fortress of Solitude it’s covered in dark black crystal everywhere. Yes that’s what I thought I was going to I’m going to leave me I want to see if you have to live for I mean that what that actually is wife to death. That’s that’s the best part about the expanding universe is like at least in comic books they explore that at length where it like her force ghost comes back like it’s all in him but he’s actually creating a force ghost that is composed of nothing but his own guilt and what he sees is his his wife going back and haunting him in just constantly reminding him that you know you are you know there’s no way you know we want our own sort of as a you’re the chosen one that is intended where to die was supposed to be auto erotic force a sexy Asian I’m not sure George Lucas was going to just like David Carradine. Also a master of his art come through dark side there are some similarities I guess and choking yourself during sex. Ever think what if any of those those motivated jokes were like into some of that shit so they died happy. What if you know that you only see Admiral Oswald dying like from the chest up and half what if he’s like you know he’s like oh you know them hard as he died just from a mortice and I really don’t see how I do not see much of a D.D.S. I’m under town in any of the original trilogy I just didn’t look too hard. Only going to work hard enough to really bring it out in a serious note about controversial topics in movies that you guys see in the back to the future clip recently what one wears on the water they put it to the theme of a pro back well you know this is an actual outtake and it was referenced being gay in is that we go back to the future but it was my mom. What has an impact on what if I come back and I’m gay and the doc says you know why shouldn’t you be happy and I was like that would be an interesting I don’t know but it wouldn’t fly in the eighty’s was OK There was a funny thing I saw some outtakes from the frighteners where the fuck is his name. Michael J. Fox Michael J. Fox keeps forgetting he’s not in Back To The Future. That’s funny so he starts screaming out and sort of just get mad. Oh I wonder if those early onset Parkinson’s like given him some memory lapses. I have screamed Doc Christopher Lloyd for annual encounters. Yes OK So here’s my Dragon Con One of my drunken stories I got a bunch I have had my picture taken more than times Shatner’s would cost money and I are well aware you are human. Know that bender thing using the vendor cost and that’s awesome I got a pink one too that I work with breast cancer. That’s what’s really sad I couldn’t I couldn’t paint the silver one because John Dimaggio signed my shiny metal ass at home sign my shiny metal ass and he like me bend over like a big sentence you probably love that. Oh so so there’s a story so if you have been to the Walk of Fame and you know but like every story I’ve heard about John the magic is that his personality is like one to one for better Oh I think it is. So everyone’s like in lined up to talk to him and this guy in a really cool they had this like steampunk for trauma caused by going this guy walks up there and join them as you like this guy breaks in line just imagine OK Will you call Carson I guess I’ll sign it for you and he looked excited but I also jumped in line. So I’ve been standing there for like two minutes even though it means we suspect and looks up and sees me and goes whoa. And for those of you listening in all my eyes get big like his dad and he’s like that is so cool just a minute. So I waited in line because you know not a dick and he gets to me and he comes up and he signed my visor inside my ass and my friends are like hey we’re going to videotape him and I just want you to talk off screen so it’s in my better costume and I hear Bender’s voice in this like this is surreal. So I get out of there. I’m like OK we’re tired and then my one of my friends was I guess a cancer a rare form of cancer called Inflammatory Breast Cancer very rare in a twenty nine year old and I wanted to make her laugh so I was like I want to go to kind of paint bender I can’t paint over it so we built another one. Another vendor and I built the first vendor for that how one thousand night party and yeah and I just want to impress somebody. I don’t press everyone on the planet except for I guess I don’t write but it’s like why we do anything else in this world I think I think so. Podcast just for a girl. Trust me I know I mean I got to say I don’t know how women think because everything a guy does it would have to get a job make money it’s all for women. Why don’t women wake up for every morning. We’re not in it for men if you know what women think how they think. Please contact these guys and get in there quick because we’ve been we’ve been searching for this answer for the thirteen billion but it was Oscar Wilde who said that women are made to be loved not understood. We’ve heard the joke about the genie right know what you guys are OK I’ll give you three wishes thing I want to be really attracted to Dylan and I will be really smart gun. OK I want to bridge to Hawaii because I’m afraid of flying. You know it is so much work at all and that was something else I want to know how women think and the Genie goes You want the bridge to be two lanes or four lanes. But OK so so the bender thing going around it might my friend Travis who actually has prospered at Dragon Con is a game of thrones thing now he’s followed me around the world was that easy. Yes gamest on staying well here’s here’s how I got the credentials. The year before I went to the men are like that big a deal. Dragon Con the elderly may not actually even if they say no to us it’s silly to take this seriously. Ha ha the diversion Dragon Con Comic Con is a Dragon Con is really run by fans. Yeah as recently as where has Comic-Con is basically run by Disney and Marvel which is this Disney now so if Marvel Disney wanted brothers and that kind of that was comic on drunk I was much more accessible. So I show up my Bender costume. And I kind of this is a last minute thing. I signed up for the parade but this girl says to me Look if you shop at that parade no one in their right mind to stop you and the police kept walking by checking people for the ribbons and then make you leave you’d have a ribbon so the cop stops me if the parade starts going on and I’m like I’m screwed and the cop turns to the side of me pulls out his phone and takes a selfie with two or three times have you heard the guy stand up. He basically goes on a Russian class trip and he doesn’t actually know any Russian but he gets wasted and the thing is Russians are so egomaniacs that if anyone does anything ridiculous they respect the fuck out of it so he gets away so the only thing they’ll say is in Russian is that we have this drunk white guy and all he does is just imitate every movie he’s ever seen a basically of Tom Cruise doing something stupid or something like that as repeating that he becomes the biggest hero at all these Russian galleys tell me he found some way to squeeze the notebook into there. Yeah I want to like a chick flick with an angry Russians given that he’s a machine with a great that would be funny I was playing I was playing a game of Call of the little ones and I was saying I have a writing skills so I’m going to write a poem about a girl falling in love with an artist called the notebook roll fail the role the notebook is terrible. It makes sense to them but I was what you were talking before we actually spark us we’re talking about going to Dragon Con You want to presidential my body just follow me around the big fancy cam and all my stuff in his bag. OK my his camera bag is in my big like Timbuktu Timbuktu messenger bags are great messenger bag and they’re like well who are you with bender and he just kept living stay in the parade I know right. So the next year he got up a press credential to do stuff and it really was that easy. Yeah so Max is convinced the press credentials for de counter nothing I think I think it’s like the highest mountain that we can climb in with such a big deal that we need to like cover the Sherlock Holmes best of all this is too general to be killed then you know. Drag it if you want to be a convention is a beautiful thing in and of its own right. It’s going off. Coming over the bacon convention we don’t know the bacon fat we literally like right before we came on here we are talking to the organizer of bacon fest. Yeah there’s a girl in Atlanta who does a lot of stuff or Dragon Con and she like runs you’re going to read a community you know names Nicky bacon fanatic if she’s the moderator of our Reddit our Atlanta like well yeah when they’re on our Atlanta does like meet up like a joystick she’s on just put it together but have you had your six through those burgers they have their food and another they they have like they don’t have their own kitchen staff they use someone else. Oh yes someone like rented out for like that so I can’t remember the name of it but their food is like illegal food it is it is fantastic food as good rep the other there’s no there’s nothing quite like going down there ordering again it’s a couple of tacos and playing Turtles in Time. There was an outstanding Ninja Turtles game I’d stills and it might be the best one ever made any time I play the Allison friends occasionally and there’s some thousand things Dein Diablo they go flying toward the screen and there was a mechanic and turtles in time you had like Michael Foot Soldier into the screen. So we’re like playing your someone over you know our voice a Turtles in Time that means that it’s a corpse fly at your face. That’s funny actually it’s a beach shredder at the end of stage four is you have to like keep throwing dudes into the screen and you can yeah stride it was actually like and I get behind the scenes manipulating these mechanical arms that are coming in and like grabbing you from offscreen nose O’Carroll and I’ve only played it recently with like four people on a limited place so we’re not really trying hard. That’s kind of like having to plug into controller slot two to beat psycho mantis that make no damn sense you know you know what old game gives me the right so I have a Raspberry Pi that has high on it like every freakin game you can have what you pay for it with no I did not pay six hundred dollars for did you learn what the fuck it is from the podcast Or did you know all I knew about me and a friend were. Actually going to do a Raspberry Pi website we were going to build them into like untender cartridges like the docking station be a Super Nintendo now but then I got a job so I was like I work at the Veterans Hospital blind research like this is a technology for blind division lost veterans and all people in general and then it went away because our government’s not the best with money sometimes. Oh yeah so we’re talking about and the first people to get cut or as you meet the disabled Well it’s funny I remember they told me we’re losing funding and it’s not like the old veterans are going to get better eyesight like now they’re just going to declassify vision hearing Washington combat related injuries unless you like to the Grenadier So my attitude was like me get this straight if you sat next to a mortar launcher in Vietnam for months you have ring in your ears must be just bad genes I guess. I felt a lot of people with that you’ll get like a thirty percent rating for disability that you have to go through like three or four years of appeals always terror in a hearing like here’s the thing about the V.A. versus our scaredy the V.A. like they’ll give you a hundred percent if you challenge it in court but I mean it takes literally less because they can’t find the paperwork to prove anything to be a well Gabe actually was a problem they had a fire. No joke they don’t have anything electronically stored in the V.A. or at least up until about two thousand and twelve. They did you know change is pretty tricky in the military. I’ll say one hundred years of tradition unspoiled by Progress depressing for a number of reasons but the biggest reason being able to walk into the nursing home and you see a lot of people just didn’t look happy. And I mean I guess you see some things in war and I live in a nursing home and you’re just not pleased with the way they treat the veterans there if you’re a World War two vet you feel like you know one thing and then it just seems that going to war was real well that’s a declaration. Heroes Captain America what you signed up for like you know my grandfather enlisted and he was actually in school for chemistry when he enlisted and he ended up being a pharmacist in the Navy during the war. So they’re like OK you’re smart you know chemistry will make you if you’re going to you’re going to be in charge of lecturing drugs and painkillers and stuff so you know my grandfather you know was he never you don’t we never saw anything like you know awful but you got guys from the front lines you see just terrible things and they’re treated like heroes when they enlisted and they’re the greatest generation and you have the Vietnam vets who were treated decidedly less like heroes and which makes no sense because they didn’t choose to be there. Yeah exactly like that you’re going over there deal with it and that’s just and then the Desert Storm vets and Iraqi Freedom that seem to be hit or miss like some of them seem to be feel like heroes others didn’t and they signed up for I mean they I mean they knew they were they signed up going over there and not to take away anything from that but I mean they went over there. They come back and it was a crap shoot. You’re either going to get saluted or not describing that kind of take on the branding of the war. Yeah and it’s but that’s ridiculous. Yeah so I like number one it’s it’s not my fault I wasn’t born for the Gratian aeration which is a stupid thing to say. But number two like I mean like you don’t you don’t have any say in that as a foot soldier. OK I mean the branding of a war is they’re the highest of levels and has everything to do with you know a million other factors like the culture you know the who the leadership in charge you know it turns out like decades after words like secret documents are released and then you get to see me and I do that. It had a tremendous amount of strength to be told your you have to go do this. Basically we need a Hitler to make us proud of soldiers again. That’s what it takes to be proud of soldiers we need a Hitler to kill. Well I think we’re not proud of so there is plenty of people out there support the military support the troops. That’s one thing that you might not necessarily support war. You might aspire a world or for whatever reason but you’re going to support the troops because you know they signed up for this and it takes it you have to be a strong person and have someone say to you we need you to go do this with explosives and show us that you’re doing the correct thing. I don’t think that the government does support our troops very well and what I end up in my head. That’s where that is the V.A. I mean when you look at the systemic ongoing problems with the way we treat veterans I mean everything that everything with the V.A. is incompetent. I mean I’ve I’ve delivered several seminars to people where you know I’m having to correct massive amounts of misinformation. I mean I’m things you would think they would know like the tennis benefits that are improved veteran’s pension the standards around getting disability like basic stuff you would you would think they would know Yama sitting at home say you know that’s that’s actually not correct at all and that kind of incompetence is representative of a much larger problem of you know once the veterans are done serving their country their government’s very happy just to say you know we’re we’re going to kind of forget about you. All right so much for your story about someone that and I want to check which was in the marching orders and I’m not going to use her name but she she enlisted after she graduated and she had I believe back or hip problem. And she was on the West Coast at a V.A. and they were asking where she serves I’ve never been deployed so the people thought she was pressing a memory so they like put her in a closet and start hitting on all these sounds of like I.D.E.’s exploding and whatnot. They tried like jar of memory and they’re like Oh the look on your face says it all and she told me to set up a podium a couple years ago and they can I myself are you serious. Look what happened and I was just like I get that you might suppress memories but she was like twenty three maybe twenty three or twenty four and to have suppressed memories and she’s only been in the military for like nine months she went fishing that there was just diagnosed pregnant and couldn’t handle it or something and I don’t know I mean that’s just you see it in health care in general I mean in health care they try to take you know the concert of one size fits all for clothes and stuff well it’s really one size fits not in health care and you know you can’t you can’t tell. You can’t have a broad spectrum approach saw goes mental issues you might have two people with the same symptoms that might have the same thing the same medicine might work but you can’t you can’t say oh we just tested this guy you had a fever and cough this guy has got to be the same problem you can’t you can’t do that and I think it really gets magnified in at the V.A. because you have people who wait for the benefits for ten years I had a family friend who had a heart problem and he saw like four different doctors and all four doctors or some different one and he eventually passed away at one point because of some heart problem and I don’t know that of seeing the same doctor and having you know agreed upon diagnosis by of help but just sky goes down there to the V.A. for different times and for the doctors. He’s got a file just fine. I’m a doctor saw him last time and continue the conversation with a chronic disease because honestly you know more about of the doctor like you do with it every day or researching it constantly the guy’s got to have a broad general researching your disease is dangerous now. Mossad’s cancer yeah it was like the wedding day effect but I mean if there is like diabetes you’re going to be if you’re diabetic you’re going to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the ship better than a general practice you always know how it’s affecting you because I mean people different ways. And you’re right there is the one on the cancer thing like Oh I have a cough cancer I stub my toe cancer and. Something up the other day. It said I had nothing to worry about I was like I must have nothing I must never do you know whether these guys I’m fine I remember having some neck pain the other day and thinking what if it’s been Janice but I don’t look it up. I’d rather just not know oh my god O.B. and I both had neck pain last year from some sort of a weird virus or both happen at the same time and that’s and that’s what Kate said she’s like well what if it’s meningitis and he and I just look at each other because at that time we were still sharing that same bathroom so it was like the all the anthems were there so you should probably be looking to see what she was mine she was mine. Yeah so if it’s Mongiardo such it’s infectious. Do you remember the meningitis scare we were attacked. Yeah if you got it. Yeah Reggie ball had meningitis I think you had viral not bacterial. Here the one that was a contagious I forget which one that is actually it was this I think they’re both contagious but ones like more fatal one is like really contagious and is really bad the other one you can spread but I think you have to like I think bacteria. Yeah you know I don’t want to ease your wonder bacteria as well as your spread I think Dr Oz And it was for whatever reasons but we have to not tell you which one it is and you have it. Which one is worse Well they’re both pretty bad I remember my mom was like to be if you start feeling better I’ll go to the doctor’s rage of all the men and I don’t have the same circle of friends. Now THAT is funny like and I remember my mom actually make those assumptions to make sure you introduce yourself like you know that you all are like Sure yeah right on top of that the funny thing was he wasn’t so my classes I had health with him and his arms were like whew. Speaking of health how hard was Georgia Tech Health’s one of those stupid heart. Well this was a biology class in the art of hell so I love the silly shadow in my biology class I’m going to see it. I held my first Test I felt I had to study hard as hell for the rest of semester my teacher’s name was Webster he was Michael Johnson’s trainer for the dangerous Olympics everything was on the line. She thought I know I’ll write you guys look so angry at me right now so I am at the site I used to live with a kind of a silly you probably are from tech as well he was a biomed Ph D. candidate recently he’s a gymnast. Yeah actually yeah I mean it was silly. So some of us he he told me like with a lot of shame he was like you know what I mean health like quiet. He’s like D. stands for diploma. Fast forward into the huge done by medical engineering do you know what he was teaching when he was in his Ph D. who not only was self. Oh yeah all right. Well you know those who can’t do teach I guess. Oh yeah OK I could make you better than a D. in health but I can teach you like no one’s business if you ever meet any other cool athletes attack. Joe Joe an ally I met him too. He really been really good Roman Roman or a man or a row maybe one of my favorite football players because he says he was a bit offensive lineman and I remember at that A.C.C. Championship Game two thousand and six which we won’t talk about as I get angry I pretty sure his father was there as I was on the outside of the band I think his father said it was like a six foot something huge guy in a game you show an ally Jersey and he looked big and mean and angry I got of his dad or something you know his cousin is The Rock Dwayne Johnson Yeah yeah and that’s kind of how we got as his entry way into wrestling but at the same time you suck to be good at I mean for your day I’m not I’m not saying it’s not like Wayne just like wave a magic wand because I mean like he obviously I worked very hard to get on to Georgia Tech. Yes and we’ll wrestling is an interesting thing to talk about if it’s a sport or not it really is in that you’re basically told OK you two guys you’re going to win what is going on for thirty minutes you have to basically do a thirty minute improv fight where you don’t hurt each other so bad that it’s not believable that you come back and we might have some people shop in the ring to surprise you. We need the shock value to be there so we might not tell you who’s coming out. So it’s like OK we’re going to fight for thirty minutes and we can’t really hurt each other but we have to throw each other around and break things or we should have backs for thirty minutes and then we have to finish this and we have to sell this and it’s really is acting. Oh no doubt about it and but it’s the improvisation in the improvs because without wrestling it’s because I mean there’s no way I’m sure they have certain things choreograph it all at some point we’re going to do this movie about three times in a Brevard I’m going to slam you but it’s not like you know you have a thirty minute fight choreographed. No of course not and I’m sure you know there is rehearsing over and over again like. OK when I get you in a corner of something you know is crowd pleasing is who if we do you know this move so they’ll probably like be setting each other up for like you know their signature is because the fans want to see that stuff. Boy catches me about about wrestling is just how how entertaining it is I mean like it really reminds me of like Kabuki theater where like you know they are in Japan they would like paint their faces and then they would like bring like swords and stuff onto onto a plane and it was like a fake fight and people were cheering it on. I mean this is what that was the genesis of modern kung fu films. I think you know and a very real way now wrestling is very similar. Now I don’t think that Vince McMahon was studying Japanese culture whenever he came up with the devil to be left but I didn’t study any culture ever. But I do think that the same principles are resonating with us and that’s why we enjoy it. Morning You’re a funny man and I thought we were out of the podcast called How did this get made. I mean I’m aware of it as a couple. Paul sheer from the league does which character and he was he was Andre. He must be a good actor or a liar. The did the movie. I forgot the name of the movie oh no holds barred and they’re talking about how one point he and Hawkins got the script and I stayed up all night be writing it and the like and then these guys are in a hotel room doing push ups or cocaine we write in this movie script because they wanted to make to make this movie a big deal and they couldn’t use Hulk Hogan’s real name in the movie because Marvel actually holds a trademark to hawk now which is why they use hole called it’s Dave in the movie you can perform a civil court where they can bill him is that you know in Indonesia what’s Israel like Terry Terry. Hogan Yeah and you think Terry what kind of what kind of a tough guy names Terry Terry Crews tell you had off at such a time frame of a big seller so I heard he said if you send the scene in Brooklyn nine nine. No but he goes by Terry and that too when he saw the one point he picks up. Like do I weigh anything to you. So I called her back great I love that scene where they’re working out in my wife and kids and I don’t know he just picks up like fifty lb dumbbells justice done a giant dance routine and I don’t you know it’s like fifteen pound weights in our arms like work something out it’s like one hundred pounds an inch and he’s like throwing things our allies at that’s a man who really managed to turn being strong funny into to a good career putting putting one hundred percent out there every fucking time I let it rest. Well what about doing Johnson I mean like he he is one. OK here’s one right Soho COLGAN try he won at life where he has won as unlikely as one with the universe to his goals for Iraq. Vince McMahon said upon this rock I shall build my house. Yes and No no that was Ric Flair by way before blues either Vince McMahon or Jesus one of the two. But the Rock Jesus what’s the difference. I don’t know I feel like there’s more like God the Father. Well it was his father who made the company wasn’t really there. So yeah I guess that’s when you remember a whole colons old movies when we were kids they were back. Remember suburban commando and there was not a nanny. Christopher Lloyd played the fathers were commando like Doc Brown was in the movie they did Mr nanny and Sam with muscles and Hulk Hogan really thought that these are going to be like family hits because they can be kind of cute movies for kids you know I mean I saw when I was a kid. But like a diesel the pacifier that was actually pretty funny. He should’ve won an Oscar for that role. I have never said I didn’t work so hard he was shit faced before but I get in the rock was like OK I want to I want to be more than just a wrestler. So I need to I need to get out there but I don’t want my first thing to be like a big deal like if the rocks jump into a feature film it can’t be it’s just killing him because if you fail you want to pledge on scene. He tried to do that and he John Cena had the Marine Yeah I never saw it and I think the problem was no one else did you. You know it had the baggage from Terminator two and that girl from that surgery soap opera it was Drax the destroyer seems to be doing OK He’s doing it to what the rock that was he’s he so he did that Scorpion King thing which is kind of like put his face in movies then did the follow up movie it wasn’t supposed to be a blockbuster like the fall of gravity movie was not designed to be a blockbuster so it can be a flop and then he started doing other movies like you know the tooth fairy and when he was in Be Cool. He played a gay bodyguard that was stretching and gag did a really fantastic job so he took roles that weren’t action based. To guess remember the wrestler in the hurricane. I do not. He basically he was a giant comic book fan and so he dressed as a superhero. He even had the Green Lantern like thing as his thing now really hard it was like his deal and so at one point he gets into it like a debate with the rock right at the end of the rock saying The Scorpion King is the greatest of all freaking champion superheroes of all time and goes oh yeah. Brendan Fraser could be the fuckin Scorpion King of the rock with no no. For the boulder you know and no one ever saw the hurricane again but I had a great gimmick he was awesome. Dwayne Johnson he did movies outside of being you know a big strong man he did movies we had to actually have some acting jobs. So then he successfully became what he calls a franchise Wagram you put you put the rock in your franchise and you’re back on top. Put him in jail you know you’re going to put it in fast and furious you’re doing fine. They could have put him in Spider-Man and it will be OK You will be so I don’t know Spiderman like Twain Johnson Dwayne Johnson kind of like them they can buy better but magic watch him be the new Peter Parker You know he’s the only black out of an exam movie I can’t wait for that. Yeah that’s right. D.C. got a got a hold Iraq they’re going to aggressive aren’t marvels that I don’t know D.C.. Biding their time. They’ve been real quiet recently not just know them out so twelve movie three year plan just like Marvel did not know I am aware of that but all the mood the news cycles recently like past two or three weeks all D.C. did was release that promo picture unite the seven with Jason Momoa as at our command which was also a hardcore Kiwi sailor type. They’ve been real quiet to let Marvel like do this Avengers thing and they’re not in there and they know that they can’t feel they are right now. Well if there isn’t two. Yeah I think I would just want to head off set it. I mean if you no matter what time of year you released Batman or Superman it’s making a billion dollars Others just double I think they are kind of doubling down on like the gritty attitude of that lab. You know like that always delivers as like a product and so now you get like Suicide Squad is the next kind of push thing after this crossover that they have coming. That’s a pretty like Grady serious kind of take and I was very impressed with that I totally did not see them going in that direction and like Chad let those criminals in jail. What I dislike about what D.C. is doing is they have their their T.V. and their movie universe separated I love the way Marvel did that you know Agent Carter thing they had an eight episode run of it’s based on Agent Carter from the first Captain America movie and it was that I was done pretty well I don’t really like your T.V. shows but I am impressed what they do in them. Like when halfway through the season of Agents of SHIELD where it matches up with Captain America comes out where shield collapses organization so they go from like super N.S.A. into like Splinter Cell terrorist group mid season siding with the release of kind of the bad guys are now in charge of everything like Hydra took over everything. Yes yes Solomon like so they went rogue internally for their own organization. What’s crazy is the theory right now is that Sky is going to be inhuman humans so they’re like building that towards that movie were allegedly the deals going to be and that went to the needles get everywhere. That’s good that they’re in gauging all the properties you know trying to keep them well. Guardians of the gay. You could be a double edged sword for Marvel because now it’s like look what we just made a billion we can’t fail. Howard the Duck the motion picture set it up for a trilogy and I don’t we own the rights to the general. No get all put in spandex will give them you know some superpowers of their own sort of oh we can’t fail mode. Well they haven’t failed yet. They’re in a golden age man. I mean we’re very lucky to be watching. Well I would just watch no one go to Black Panther and Miss Marvel a lot. Oh no I don’t think that will happen here’s what I think’s going on. They have realized that there are so many reboot so many children of the eighty’s and you know they had all these cartoons when we were kids of you know Avengers and Superman Batman and stuff and they’re like you know what we can make these movies and these people will see them and they’ll bring their kids to see them if they have any kids that is what it takes like they constantly cite all of comic books falling out just because they can have a kid. Properties left. Yeah what they say the comic books. Collapse because they weren’t engender new fans and they made mature ship in the ninety’s so now they’re making. Yeah like you know when the green goblin came back it was some dark stuff and Spiderman Why did he kill the clone he caused Peter’s wife to have a miscarriage the unborn child died. Yeah again Peter Parker unluckiest guy the planet and it was like next level dark stuff like that four issue series called Revelations it just got it went from he’s having a bad year to oh my god he probably wishes he died and you know with the death of Superman. First off the Death of Superman kind of when comic books it killed death I mean right now if you want to die you can bring back whatever reason okra type nation alternate timeline Your tell me Neil Gaiman’s written joker into the Sandman and then they’re like well jokers ten million is likely going to come back is like just play ball come on. Yeah that’s that’s absolutely right that’s why he that’s why Sandman is so far removed from S. a D.C. Universe because he just didn’t want to play ball even for that one episode and then after that he will relate to Sammy movie I think. Leavitt is producing it’s going to be very interesting there’s a lot of ways to do it but. Fuck man they can do it right. But I’m more excited about that than any other comic book I like the esoteric stuff like that. Sure I would have loved to have seen Hellblazer live up to its to its original source material because the movie was new divorce Neo from the whole thing if they had if it had been if they’d done Constantine now and really been true to the source of where it gets into like all of that cosmic slash like religious kind of some sort is going to from the start it’s nasty. I mean what what Didn’t Alan Moore started. Yeah well he created the character in Swamp Thing and then I was spun off by the guy who also later spawn of Lucifer from the Sandman. OK yeah it’s don’t got oh maybe I’m seventy with a writer who could be I don’t remember what it was an interesting job that’s got to be a comic book writer. I mean like anything goes I guess I mean there’s always someone to tell you know when you have an idea. Dude it’s getting wildly expressive like from my favorite writers right now are Bryan Cave on that. Fraction I’m not sure you guys are let’s talk comic history for a minute. And again it was east of Western a slam. I spoke in amazing how many writers do you think pitch tomorrow. Let’s bring back when Stacy like no no no in just five years after they killed her because I was like the first time a hero like lost someone serious like you losing your parents first. Ok whatever it was kind of assume that Gwen Stacy in Peter Parker are going to be a thing and then they killed her out of nowhere it seemed it was the shock and it was like kind of the loss of innocence in comic books and she was a woman as a writer she was resurrected fairly recently that you know they might want to rethink it was like forty years old a spider man thing is a different universe I think. Like they had one might reverse rewrite all the Spider-Man places and fight and win one universe she got that sort of peter. Sounds like a dead poor thing. Deadpool Kills the universe. Well one point he like finds all of his alternate universe versions and they’ll kill ever. Thing including the comic book writer. Yes I have seen that I was actually pretty funny. You know what’s funny is Deadpool was made by the Michael Bay of comic books but just of life. And originally he was a very original and all it is just like some random ninja that they put next to cable and I like them like this is the next one I came into it like really flushed. That’s exactly right. Yeah the subsequent writer was like well I mean why don’t we just screw this guy make a modern funny I heard he was literally a rip off of Death Strike yet what’s just like from the stroke pressure from America they will get them. Wade Yeah it is. It’s blatant. I think it was like how close can we get and not get sued. Going to play we’re going to play close to the lawsuit and see what happens when they do that kind of stuff all of the time like Clark Kent is a real character in the Marvel Universe fictional chicken right who’s going to flinch first know Clark Kent is in the Marvel Universe. He is and I think he is a human and he is just a mild mannered reporter. For the Daily Bugle All right you know random guy I’m sure there’s a Bruce Wayne out there to buy just like some rich playboy livin off a New Jersey going to shift gears here and talk about posture. Yeah Paul Johnson the coach of the year A.C.C. deservedly so. Yes Very much so you don’t know seven or eight so I don’t know eight which was Chang Daley’s last year and I was so great to see that regime put into the guillotine merciful end but sort of the first time I met Paul Johnson I Shiksha openness and a few times but they were introducing the new uniforms because of Paul Johnson coming in they were going to always wear white at home try to tell us you did so you always pictured the team wearing the same colors because you two extremes are Oregon where just imagine there’s an O. and some color scheme or Georgia Tech were there basically always wear some color scheme like the one that looks from a drop out designer yes. Yeah there’s a lot of acid going into those organ designs or goes out of its way to come up with a most likely do a hard tension. It’s repugnant or repellent or just some other terrible word but Paul Johnson wanted just standard white uniform to wear at home on the road because traditionally you where you you were cobblers at home and wait in the road but the home team it depicts white people wear the colors when they come to Atlanta. So they’re showing us often it’s been done a club opera which doesn’t make a lot of sense and so you think well it’s a nightclub nothing in the middle of the day. Tech rents it out they bring some bartenders they do side work in the back while we talk. So we’re talking with Paul we’re talking around Paul Johnson and then you know finally get a chance to meet him one of my friends and introduces himself cordially and he’s like Nice to meet you and I said you know I wish I was still going to be around next year but I’m going to buy my tickets things like you know you get another hearing probably for it. And someone said when asked a question about the transfers he’s like well we really only had like two or three guys go if we had two tight ends I don’t use my system and I want one quarterback transfer to do it so how could he be and I just love ya all. Oh my God he said it I can’t wait for him to have his first press conference when this guy has no filter. Well did you see the trophy ordering from the governor after that huge a match so the wrong what he said. Yeah would you guys be huge in overtime last year and he’s like and you could tell he had like a wise crack or something just it’s the guy. Let this one go. One says yes. Next you’re going to punch him in the teeth and I have this fascination with you never know what’s going on his mouth like the Eveready every day she Saudi blogger they have like Paul Johnson interviews and he’s like oh yeah oh my God I don’t think it’s like Paul Johnson is like you know all you need to have a good time survive in the wilderness is is a knife a knife a rubber band in like a Pink Floyd LP and one thing you should always know you always want to actually finish it you do want to include when you’re when you’re working out and when you’re you know you know it’s skinning a chicken or something and it’s just like field dressing a deer. Yeah make sure the job’s finished he’ll just be an ex-con and I’m like wow. So the guy who writes that Spencer Khalid has a fascination with Bob Johnson and it’s never it comes out I’m like This is ridiculous we sort of you know he looks he has a serious premier of course especially during the game but the areas the guy hasn’t smile he smiled once when he beat George I don’t know that more than a smile so I thought that was the average of trial personified. Well what it only comes once every six years. You look and feel that way. I want to how much he hurt the next day from using those muscles I don’t like doctors run over everyone so much I have to feed everyone says he’s currently cracking jokes like he’s a very big sense of humor but he’s like you know when when the clock starts he’s all business like owning my stuff Don I want to run the ball I just want you you want to call the same play every time you don’t get cute. You want to send him in there and say left right like you do you do in this left or the right and then you keep going score points just below. My big fear about what happened this past year is that we use tech fans kind of have I guess an unfair high standard which it’s comes from being in the A.C.C. because with the erratic teams in the A.C.C. You could have a mediocre team but just happen to catch a bunch of your opponents and bad weeks and find yourself like a nine you know like what you happen to catch two other teams they were having there what the hell moments of the season. That’s a very fair assessment. Yeah so we always had this we can make an orange ball and now we’ve done it like well we have the stud red shirt maybe that come in and we I mean I don’t know who we have in the lab right now I assume are grown wide receivers like Calvin Johnson was has been assigned to a family and we do the same thing with Thomas and waller just like Disney does which are performers. Smelter smelters programming falter but we had the fail safe and as his elbow which may put him back in football he pushed you pushed a button and it’s always like now you have a football and also they’re almost programmed I think they need to be paid. But bring on the edge of all talk about it. There’s something like To this idea like growing athletes you know we call it called experience but it’s now this is you know what I’m going to let you know what happened like twenty five years ago or so very long of that free agency in the N.F.L. in which parents decided I teach my six foot to my wife six foot even. We teach my kid to catch up we can walk he’s going to buy a house in Boca when we get older and I think that’s what happened you have like you know used to be a guy like John Elway ones of a Stanford intergenerational talent now you have those kinds of guys winding up at Vanderbilt No you Jake Jay Cutler is a generational talent I mean if he is he’s just not you know a good quarterback but he did twenty years ago he would run up there you know one of somewhere else. Right now there’s just this big influx and plus with social media and stuff it’s like we have all these clips of my son doing amazing things or the clips of your son dance around the back though for ten seconds I can sack for a thirteen year loss for those clips I want to see that I want to see how bad you see someone try to pull a Barry Sanders for every one of those like big dance around ones these high school kids they probably have a couple where they get smashed drop the ball. An honor on the C.F. because the ball sub read it and they were talking about recruiters looking at a sixth grader somewhere and you know say OK because you’re allowed to. You can do it until the the year before they go in high school you’re allowed to. Wow Well I hear they’ll say you can’t teach natural gifts. So like if a guy happens to be six six or guy happens to be like this amazing frame you can put him through the gym you can put him teach him all the moves but you can’t you can take the most brilliant athlete or figure it out but it’s not going to make your match their size. Then again you can take someone a six foot six and runs of four for forty and he might just be an awful route runner and he might always be a novel route runner but there are always going to pay the most attention at least in developmental talent to the guy that they hope will figure the game out but has like the natural stuff of course and you have like the football Packers of Alabama this is an Arkansas Alabama they put all those players. To succeed they play they play typically a man defense and it’s hard to throw on a hard run on him too so there’s not a lot of footage of Alabama secondary get embarrassed their running backs have you know Giants is often sublime So you know what’s his face. They traded him this past year or a year ago to the Colts. Trent Richardson he looked amazing college depending on the pros so you could not attack and you have guys who are having to be you know be creating our wide receivers are going to great they can all pass block and we had this great season. I’m afraid we’re going to have problems. We want as much of problems that activation to be too high. However a real sobering experience with our basketball season and I’m going to tell you an anecdote I heard from this guy you know me I work for Google is his name is Nick. Yeah he’s a real fuckin genius and he said some one why is this is a really fuckin something for sure. I walked by his desk and you know writing the word I was so Iraqi season is that when he won the Orange Bowl is like no you basketball season he says look we only care about two sports attack football in math. I was I was at the U.N.C. game they were students leave before the game was over. Every wedding Nick that is that it was not a fair assessment that there was a time both when my older brother was attacked when I was attacked. When basketball was a living breathing powerful an entity that got the fans I remember this I mean I mean the students the students were really into basketball I’d sit outside for hours before the game. Remember the Duke game in particular was that when we won’t know we’ve lost a home that we beat them at home. Yes Yeah that I was insane I mean like basketball doesn’t have to be the also rans sport it’s just that we have a Bears thing basketball team but a great city you know when you get a team since they built this new stadium now they have all these P.A. announcements so used to be the clock stops the band would play in the crowd to get into it now it’s like you know you see everybody every is quiet for like ten seconds or so. P.S.A. in the band that plays have to fight song in the game starts again. They have like theater lighting which makes a kind of dim and you know drowsy and those might be a big piece with a lovely facility and I used to say for years that I wanted to you know go to a professional I mean to be depressed or go to a Hawks game. Now the opposite is true. I want to have a great time to go watch a hot smack Le Bron around which has happened twice now this year and I feel like it might happen four more times later on in the playoffs. Oh man are you going to go deep into it if they occasionally have a What the hell game like that against the Celtics are likely going to get the Sixers but for the most part they’re in control of games and we have such a deep rotation when I get tired. That’s what I love about the N.B.A. is that it gives you such a fair assessment of what the team can actually do. Because if you’re playing best four out of seven that gives you an idea you know because like the problem with football and there’s nothing you can do to change this given the severe beating your body every time and you can only play one game. So if something’s not working right for whatever reason then you look totally prefer like you know. Tipping Point random shit with anything exactly I love I mean that’s what’s the luring about a game seven when you reach a game seven it’s either it’s been a close series or a couple years ago the Hawks play the Heat in the playoffs like this is before the Iran thing and we won seven games in each game in that series decided by like twenty points or more and I was like What is this is the worst. Well how can we talk a team wins a blowout what’s going on here. Maybe the coaches had like an agreement beforehand. OK so like tonight late we’re just you know I like I’m not trying too hard but tomorrow the problem with the Hawks was that they were always going to make the playoffs but never get in a lottery so we were we were we were constantly getting players like B.C. Law and Salim Stoudamire who are like college all Americans you know no good in the pros. I remember after a Freshman year at Tech we drafted Josh Smith and Josh shoulders we left Jimi or Nelson sitting on the board twice and. Yes I know you’re Josh Childress who he was a big afro hair to th
