Football:
One of the early surprises in fall camp has been the play of true freshman running back Tre Bryant. The native of St. Louis was a standout at Christian Brothers College High School and made some impressive runs in last week's scrimmage.
The coaches will need to decide if Bryant is going to join an already deep rotation at running back or preserve a year and have him redshirt.
Golf:
Fremont native and Kearney resident Andy Sajevic finished play at the 2016 U.S. Amateur Golf Championships in Bloomfield, Michigan, Tuesday. After a first round, 83, Sajevic shot a second round 79 for a two-round total of 162 and missed the cut. Alex Smalley of Wake Forest, North Carolina is the leader at 7-under, 133.
Volleyball:
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) released on Tuesday its 2016 Tachikara-NAIA Volleyball Coaches' Preseason Top 25 Poll. Midland University, which ended last season ranked at No. 6, remains unchanged entering the 2016 campaign.
Midland opens its season on Thursday in California for a four-match tournament featuring three teams ranked within the Top 25 preseason poll.
The Lady Warriors open the season at the Biola/Red Lion Summer Slam Tournament on August 18-19 in La Mirada, California. Midland faces the University of Great Falls before taking on No. 9 Vanguard University, No. 11 College of Idaho and No. 19 Biola University. Midland's next opponent is No. 7 Georgetown College on August 26th at the SXU/TCC Crossover Tournament in Chicago, Illinois.
Midland opens GPAC play on Wednesday, August 31 against No. 20 Concordia University in Fremont, Nebraska. The Warriors swept the Bulldogs in the 2015 GPAC Championship to claim their second postseason title in the past three years.
The U.S. Women's Volleyball Team advanced to the semifinals of the Olympics with a 25-16, 25-23, 25-22 sweep of Japan on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
The No. 1-ranked and top-seeded Americans will face the winner of Russia-Serbia on Thursday at 8:15 p.m.
In Tuesday's quarterfinal, Jordan Larson had 12 kills, seven digs and two aces along with 10 excellent receptions. Libero Kayla Banwarth had seven digs and six excellent receptions, and Kelsey Robinson had two excellent receptions.
Should the U.S. defeat the Russia-Serbia winner on Thursday, there will be an Olympic final watch party on Saturday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center following the Red-White Scrimmage. The Red-White Scrimmage begins at 6 p.m., while the Olympic final is set for 8:15 p.m. (CT).
Wrestling:
Four-time Olympic/World champion and former Husker Jordan Burroughs (74 kg/163 pounds) looks to add to his legacy on Friday when he wrestles in the Men's Freestyle Olympic competition in Rio.
Burroughs, a Sicklerville, N.J., native, captured his third World title in 2015 after winning gold in 2011 and 2013. He won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics, and added a bronze medal at the 2014 World Championships.
Burroughs earned his spot on the U.S. Olympic Team after defeating Andrew Howe (9-3, 10-0) in the best-of-three team trials finals on April 10. Nebraska Head Coach Mark Manning is serving as a U.S. Freestyle Olympic Coach, and as a personal coach to Burroughs during the Rio Games.
Basketball:
Danielle Page scored five points while adding four rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot to help upstart Serbia to the biggest upset so far in women's basketball at the Rio Olympics with a 73-71 win over Australia on Tuesday morning at Youth Arena.
Page, a 6-2 forward from Monument, Colo., who lettered for the Huskers from 2005 to 2008, hit 2-of-3 shots from the field and added a free throw while distributing an assist to help her adopted country of Serbia to its third consecutive win at the Olympics. Serbia advances to the semifinals to take on Spain, which defeated Turkey 64-62 on a last-second shot in the game immediately following Serbia's win over Australia.
Overall, Page has produced double figures in four of Serbia's six games.
Baseball:
Whit Merrifield's Grand Slam put the finishing touches on a 9-run 4th inning, sending Omaha on their way to a 12-5 win over Fresno on Monday night at Chukchansi Park.
The Chasers continue the series in Fresno tomorrow night. Omaha will send RHP Luke Farrell (5-3, 3.79) to the mound, while RHP Brady Rogers (12-3, 2.76) will pitch for the Grizzlies. First pitch will be at 9:05 Central Time.
Curt Smith went deep twice, Brandon Jacob once as the first-place Saltdogs (43-38) out-slugged the Joplin Blasters (29-52) 8-5 at Joe Becker Stadium Tuesday night.
Smith swatted an opposite-field, three-run homer in the first, and a two-run laser in the third. The international star now has a career-high 14 home runs.
Lincoln looks to clinch the series Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Shairon Martis is expected to face RHP Mario Morales.
