Football:
The Nebraska football team held its first scrimmage of fall camp and coach Mike Riley says the goal of the scrimmage was to get everyone some action.
Riley says one surprise of the scrimmage was the play of the defensive line.
The Huskers return to the field with two practices, today.
Volleyball:
The Midland University Warrior Volleyball team began pre-season workouts on Thursday. Head Coach Paul Giesselmann was pleased how the student-athletes have worked with assistant coach Nicole Venditte on their personal strength during the off-season.
The Warriors are coming off a 33-4 season, a GPAC Post-Season Tournament Championship and an appearance in the NAIA National Championship quarterfinals. The Warriors begin the season Thursday, at the Biola University Invite in La Miranda, California. The Warriors home opener is Wednesday, August 31st, at 7:30pm, versus Concordia University, at the Wykert Event Center.
Baseball:
The Omaha Creighton Prep Legion baseball team finished the American Legion Baseball World Series, in Shelby, North Carolina, with a record of 1-and-2. Prep lost to Rockport, Indiana, 8-3, on Saturday, concluding competition. Prep ended the year, 59-5.
Golf:
The US Amateur Golf Tournament begins today in Bloomfield, Michigan. Fremont native Andy Sajevic is competing in the weeklong competition.
NSAA:
Nebraska High Schools officially begin fall sports practices today for boys and girls cross-country and volleyball. Later this week, girls golf and softball competitions officially begin.
Volleyball:
Former Nebraska volleyball standout Sarah Pavan finished fifth in beach volleyball for Canada with partner Heather Bansley at the Olympics on Sunday at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Pavan and Bansley were beaten in the quarterfinals by Germany's Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst, 14-21, 14-21.
On the court, the U.S. Women's National Team will face Japan, the fourth-place team in Pool A, in the quarterfinals on Tuesday at a time to be announced. The Americans, who are in search of their first Olympic Games gold medal in women's volleyball, finished pool play with a 5-0 record for the second consecutive Olympic Games. The U.S. has finished with the silver in each of the past two Olympics Games.
Track:
Former Nebraska track and field athlete Györgyi Zsivoczky-Farkas finished eighth in the heptathlon for Hungary at the Olympics, her best finish in her third appearance at the Games.
Zsivoczky-Farkas totaled a personal-best 6,442 points. She was sixth in the high jump - clearing 6-1 1/4 (1.86m) - and seventh in the shot put (47-2 1/2, 14.39m). She posted other top-10 finishes in the long jump, javelin and 800m.
Two other Husker track and field athletes will take the stage this week. Miles Ukaoma races for Nigeria in the 400m hurdles Monday at 9:30 a.m. (CT). Marusa Cernjul begins high jump qualifications for Slovenia on Thursday at 8 a.m. (CT).
Soccer:
The Nebraska soccer team controlled on offense and defense from start to finish in its lone exhibition match, routing North Dakota State, 4-0, at Barbara Hibner Stadium on Saturday night.
Senior Jaycie Johnson, who played her first game since a season-ending ACL tear on Sept. 25, 2015, scored twice to lead NU's strong offensive performance. Johnson's first score came in the 37th minute off an assist from Haley Hanson. Johnson added her second goal in the 58th minute off an assist from Caroline Flynn.
The Huskers open their regular season on Friday at Hibner Stadium against Marquette, with kickoff set for 7:05 p.m.
Tennis:
Former Husker Dusty Boyer captured his first professional doubles title in a $10,000 Futures Event in Innsbruck, Austria over the weekend. Boyer teamed up with Germany's Lukas Ollert to defeat Croatia's Duje Delic and Mate Delic, 6-2, 6-3.
While at Nebraska, Boyer posted a 89-52 record in singles, and a 67-47 mark in doubles. He achieved first-team All-Big Ten status on three occasions, and collected Academic All-Big Ten honors three times.
Basketball:
Venezuela was eliminated from medal contention on Sunday night at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, falling 81-56 to Australia to finish play with a 1-4 record. Creighton graduate Gregory Echenique had two rebounds and two blocked shots in 15 scoreless minutes during the contest. He finished the Olympics leading Venezuela in leading the team in points (9.2), rebounds (3.8) and blocked shots (0.6) per game, and was also tops by shooting 66.7 percent (16-24) from the field while starting all five games.
The top four teams in each pool advance, but Venezuela finished fifth of six teams in Group A. The South American country, playing in the Olympics for the second time ever (1992), picked up its lone win on Aug. 10 vs. China.
Baseball:
Dusty Coleman's 3-RBI night wasn't enough for Omaha, who dropped a 4-3 decision on Sunday night at Raleigh Field.
The Chasers finish the series in Sacramento tonight. RHP Jake Junis (1-0, 1.29) is scheduled to make the start for Omaha, while RHP Joan Gregorio (3-7, 5.70) will toss for the River Cats. First pitch will be at 9:05 Central Time.
Ryan Wiggins launched a go-ahead three-run homer but the Sioux City Explorers (42-38) battled back to beat the Saltdogs (41-38) 4-3 in front of 3,410 fans at Haymarket Park Sunday evening.
Sioux City is off Monday, while the Saltdogs open a four-game series in Joplin at 7:05 p.m. RHP Ryan O'Sullivan will get the ball.
