LINCOLN - All it took was one official visit for Nana Akenten to turn away from a dozen other scholarship offers and commit to Nebraska on Thursday.

The 6-foot-6, 200-pound shooting guard from Bolingbrook, Illinois, averaged 14 points and seven rebounds per game last season, then drew high praise on the summer AAU circuit.

Nebraska was his only Power Five offer. UNLV recently offered, and other Big Ten schools were showing interest.
"I told myself from the beginning that I wasn't going to commit until I was 100 percent sure of where I wanted to go," Akenten said by phone. "I guess this means I'm 100 percent in."

Akenten's visit came a week too early to apparently mingle with arguably Nebraska's greatest guard ever.

Sources indicated Tyronn Lue - coach of the NBA champion Cleveland Cavaliers - is a likely guest this weekend.

Lue, in three years at Nebraska before leaving early as a first-round NBA pick, is the school's No. 9 all-time scorer (1,577 points). He also is fourth in assists and seventh in steals. He has won two NBA titles as a player and one as a coach.

Husker assistant Jim Molinari, a longtime coach in the state of Illinois, was the lead recruiter on Akenten. The recruit said he's somewhat familiar with Husker sophomores Glynn Watson and Ed Morrow, also from Illinois.

"I know Glynn through a couple of mutual friends," Akenten said. "I don't know Ed, other than having seen him play a few times in high school."

Last weekend was Aketen's second trip to Lincoln. He made an unofficial visit in June. Earlier this week, Nebraska coach Tim Miles made a home visit.

"I really got a good feeling for the program and what it has to offer," Akenten said. "Meeting the players and the coaches and the fans, I felt real comfortable."

He said his strengths are "my shooting ability and my dedication. I will sacrifice anything to win."

Akenten takes a scholarship that opened when 6-6 wing Aguek Arop from Omaha South decommitted last month after being asked to delay his enrollment a year to attend prep school.

The Huskers have one other scholarship open, though sources say another is highly likely to be available.

Two more shooting guards are scheduled to visit this weekend: Thomas Allen, rated a four-star from Garner, North Carolina, and Parker Stewart, a three-star from Union City, Tennessee.

Allen, 6-2 and 180 pounds, transferred to Brewster Academy in New Hampshire for his senior year. At Garner last season, he averaged 21.5 points, 5.6 assists and 3.1 rebounds.
The second-team all-stater by vote of the North Carolina coaches association has narrowed his choices to Nebraska, Ohio State, North Carolina State, Saint Louis and Virginia Tech.

Stewart, 6-5 and 185 pounds, averaged about 22 points a game last season for Union City High, which finished 34-4 and reached the Tennessee state finals.

He has listed seven final schools he is considering: Nebraska, Ole Miss (visited), Kansas State (visited), Wyoming (scheduled visit Oct. 4), Butler, Georgetown and LSU.
