#CzechItOut: First ever Czech Film Festival in Malaysia, 4 days free screenings at selected GSC outlets
The Embassy of the Czech Republic presents the inaugural Czech Film Festival in Malaysia which features five Czech movies that will be screened free of charge at *Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) at Pavilion KL, Mid Valley and 1 Utama for four days from March 9th to 12th. The titles include 1996 Best Foreign Film Oscar winner Kolya and 1991 Oscar nominee The Elemental School.
Kolya is a comedy drama about a skirt-chasing middle-aged cellist who's single and free of responsibilities until he agrees to a marriage of convenience which leaves him with a five-year-old Russian boy who do not speak Czech. The film was screened to the media at the press conference and I liked it a lot. It's simple, funny, heartfelt without trying too hard to be emotional just for the sake of it, meaningful and it tells a lot about Czech's culture and history in the late 80s — which meets the purpose of this Festival — to enhance Czech-Malaysian cultural understanding and to increase film appreciation in Malaysia.
The Elemental School's a drama about the school environment in Czechoslovakia after World War II. The other three titles are Dark Blue World (2001), Oldies but Goldies (2012) and A Vote for the King of Romans (2016). All the films are rated P13 and will be projected from blu-ray discs. There will be manual censoring for any nudity or vulgarity (timing was a bit off at the press screening though ha-ha).
The tickets are free but limited and on first-come-first-serve basis.
