BOSTON - Derek Roy scored once in regulation and again in the fourth round of the shootout as the St. Louis Blues beat the Boston Bruins 3-2 on Thursday night.
Jaroslav Halak stopped 27 shots in regulation, two more in overtime and three in the shootout as St. Louis won for the fourth time in five games and continued the hottest start in its history. David Backes also scored for the Blues, and NHL points-leader Alexander Steen converted their other shootout goal after going the entire game without a shot.
Gregory Campbell and Carl Soderberg scored for Boston. Tuukka Rask made 24 saves and forced Roy to put one off the post on a breakaway in the first minute of the overtime.
DEVILS 2, KINGS 1, OT
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jaromir Jagr's 690th NHL goal 2:30 into overtime moved him into a ninth-place tie with former teammate Mario Lemieux on the league's career list and gave New Jersey a victory over Los Angeles.
The 41-year-old Jagr also tied Gordie Howe's NHL record of 121 game-winning goals.
Cory Schneider made 34 saves to earn the win. It was the second overtime victory in two nights for the Devils, who beat Anaheim on Wednesday. Jagr scored the tying goal with 1:01 left in regulation in that one.
Jagr received a holding penalty 17 seconds into OT, but Kings captain Dustin Brown also was sent off for diving. Just 13 seconds after the penalties expired, Jagr got a cross-ice pass from Marek Zidlicky and tucked his ninth goal of the season past Ben Scrivens.
Ryan Carter gave New Jersey a 1-0 lead in the third period, and Justin Williams tied it 1:05 later with his ninth goal.
RANGERS 3, STARS 2
DALLAS (AP) — Henrik Lundqvist made a season-high 41 saves — including a career-best 23 in the first period — to carry the New York Rangers win over Dallas.
Lundqvist turned aside every Stars shot in the first and stopped 35 of 36 through 40 minutes to keep New York in a 1-1 tie.
Chris Kreider and John Moore then scored 37 seconds apart in the first 1:55 of the third period to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead.
Alex Chiasson brought Dallas back within a goal by scoring at 8:27 of the third.
Just 12 seconds later, Stars goalie Kari Lehtonen stopped Rick Nash on a penalty shot. Nash had scored New York's first goal at 6:27 of the first period. It was his first goal this season, in his second game back after missing 17 games because of a concussion.
Dallas tied the game 1-1 on Stephane Robidas' goal at 8:46 of the second. It was the Stars' first power play in eight home games this season.
FLYERS 4, SABRES 1
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Matt Read scored a pair of goals to lead Philadelphia to its fifth win in six games.
Vincent Lecavalier also scored and Scott Hartnell added an empty-net goal for the Flyers, who set a season-high with 46 shots.
Read's goals came 1:40 apart late in the second period. Steve Downie and Sean Couturier assisted on both tallies for Philadelphia (9-10-2), which outshot Buffalo 46-30.
Tyler Myers netted the lone goal for Buffalo, which is 1-3 under interim coach Ted Nolan and an NHL-worst 5-18-1 this season.
The game was the first between two First Nations head coaches. Nolan is Ojibwe, and from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and Flyers coach Craig Berube is part-Cree and from Calahoo, Alberta.
Ville Leino and Tyler Ennis had assists for Buffalo, which has lost three straight.
RED WINGS 4, HURRICANES 3
DETROIT (AP) — Niklas Kronwall was credited with the tiebreaking goal in the third period, Gustav Nyquist had two goals, and Detroit broke a seven-game losing streak by beating Carolina.
Henrik Zetterberg had two assists, and Darren Helm added a goal for Detroit. Jonas Gustavsson made 24 saves.
Andrej Sekera scored twice and Brett Bellemore netted his first NHL goal for Carolina. Justin Peters stopped 43 shots.
PREDATORS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 2
TORONTO (AP) — Craig Smith netted two goals, and rookie defenceman Seth Jones and Matt Cullen also scored to give Nashville a victory over Toronto.
Toronto goalie Jonathan Bernier, who shut out the Predators last month and has dominated them during his NHL career, made 24 saves. Nashville rookie Marek Mazanec stopped 24 shots for the victory. Peter Holland scored his first goal with the Maple Leafs since being acquired from the Anaheim Ducks.
Toronto was outshot 28-26 after jumping out to an 11-5 edge. The Maple Leafs couldn't put together much sustained attack time or opportunistic offence after Holland scored 5:48 in.
Nazem Kadri, in his return from an NHL suspension, scored his sixth of the season with 4:32 remaining to bring the Maple Leafs within 4-2.
BLACKHAWKS 6, JETS 3
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Marian Hossa returned to the lineup and put Chicago ahead for good with a third-period goal in a victory over Winnipeg.
Patrick Kane, Brandon Saad, Jonathan Toews and Ben Smith each scored for Chicago (15-4-4). Patrick Sharp had an empty-net goal, helping the Blackhawks beat the Jets for the third time in three tries this season.
Andrew Ladd, Keaton Ellerby and Dustin Byfuglien scored for the Jets (10-11-3).
The first period was all Blackhawks, who held a 12-2 shots advantage.
Hossa had missed three games with a lower-body injury. He gave Chicago a 4-3 lead at 3:11 of the third period.
AVALANCHE 4, COYOTES 3
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Ryan O'Reilly scored a power-play goal at 4:18 of overtime, and Colorado bounced back after allowing two third-period goals to beat Phoenix.
Colorado had been the NHL's best team at holding a lead and entered the third period ahead 2-1 on goals by Andre Benoit and John Mitchell.
Phoenix turned up the pressure in the third period and went ahead 3-2 on goals by Martin Hanzal and Antoine Vermette four minutes apart.
The Avalanche fought back, though, tying it with 3:14 left in regulation on a whirling backhander by Cody McLeod that found its way through Mike Smith's pads.
O'Reilly ended it in overtime, sending a wrist shot past Smith for his ninth goal of the season.
Benoit had three assists for Colorado, which has won seven of nine road games.
Michael Stone also scored and Shane Doan extended his point streak to seven games with an assist on Vermette's goal for the Coyotes, who are 9-0-2 at home.
OILERS 4, PANTHERS 1
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Jordan Eberle scored a pair of goals, and Edmonton stretched its winning streak to a season-high three games with a victory over Florida.
Sam Gagner and David Perron also scored, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had three assists for the Oilers (7-15-2), who improved to 3-7 at home. Devan Dubnyk made 24 saves in the victory.
Edmonton was 2-9-1 in its 12 games before the winning streak started.
Scottie Upshall had the lone goal for the Panthers (6-13-4), whose two-game winning streak was snapped. Tim Thomas stopped 31 shots.
SHARKS 5, LIGHTNING 1
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Tommy Wingels scored two goals and Patrick Marleau added a goal and two assists to help San Jose earn its first home win in more than a month with a victory over Tampa Bay.
Brad Stuart and Brent Burns also scored for the Sharks, who looked well-rested after having three days off following a five-game road trip in which they changed time zones after every game. Antti Niemi made 36 saves, and Logan Couture had three assists.
Tyler Johnson scored for the Lightning, who dropped their season-worst third straight game on a rough West Coast trip that ends Friday in Anaheim. Tampa Bay has been outscored 16-6 in losses to Phoenix, Los Angeles and San Jose as they are struggling since losing star centre Steven Stamkos to a broken right leg last week.
