This one is sure to rile a few people up. West Virginia football coach Dana Holgorsen, when speaking about the “haves” and the “have-nots” of college football, took a few shots at some of the lesser programs in the Mountaineers’ geographical region.
Holgorsen did an interview with Mike Casazza of the Charleston Daily Mail and dropped possibly the quote of the offseason.
“The major conferences breaking away from schools like East Carolina and Marshall, I think that’s got some legs to it, but whether it happens or if I’ll still be coaching when it does happen, I don’t know,” Holgorsen said. “I hope it happens because they’re the ones holding us back from being able to feed our players three times a day or from being able to pay them just a small stipend to make their lives a little bit easier so they’re not starving to death at specific times of the year.”
I think college football fans generally agree that the top five or six conferences dominate the sport in both on-field competition and revenue generation, but Holgorsen is sure to get some remarks about the “feed our players three times a day” claim – not to mention the “staving to death” line.
Expect some strong responses in the coming days.
