Statement of Purpose

In a matter of two decades, the computing landscape has transcended leaps and bounds from desktop computers to laptops to netbooks and now to tablets and smartphones. The dawning age of Ubiquitous Computing will catapult the research in Computer Science to the next orbit. Devices will be embedded with intelligence and will be integrated in our everyday objects in such a way that it would not be noticed. Context recognition and Activity Recognition are the current research developments in this field and I have developed a penchant for them. To this end, I would like to pursue my graduation in Computer Science from Indiana University Bloomington.

The undergraduate curriculum at _______________, one of the top colleges of Engineering in India has provided me an opportunity to explore the realm of Programming and Computer Applications with subjects such as Discrete Structures and Graph Theory, Analysis of Algorithms and Design, Operating Systems and Mobile Computing. In the subject of Advanced Computer Networks, I scored the highest marks in the practical and oral examination. Also, assignments in ‘Data Structures and Files’ and ‘Analysis of Algorithms and Design’ made me more proficient in C, C++ and Java. My projects on Library Management System and Project Consent Portal further helped me sharpen my concepts in database management.  Moreover, to keep myself abreast of the latest developments in pervasive computing, I am attending various workshops, including Cloud Computing by Microsoft, Linux workshop by Sine IIT Bombay, etc. and also acquired certification courses like IBM DB2, Ethical Hacking by Techdefence. In order to hone my programming skills, I joined an Advanced Java Programming course, Android application development course and also took part in various contests on www.spoj.pl and www.topcoder.com.

“Real education goes beyond the classroom”. With the intention of gaining exposure to implementing technologies, I have interned with “Stupidsid” for the past eighteen months. The Company provides consultancy and assistance to students who wish to pursue higher studies. This is where I was thrown into the ocean of most recent technologies like Content Management System (Joomla), Ajax and jQuery. I also became well versed with how Search Engine Optimization is implemented. Developing automated algorithms like “Find me a college” according to marks, region and interests of the student and freelancing for some other websites helped me to become well acquainted with how to transform ideas to reality. I am currently working on making dedicated applications for iPhone and Android devices. Working at the Company has not only instilled me the confidence to lead a team to develop web-based applications but also hone my time-management skills.

Research is an important part of a graduate program.  In this regard, the undergraduate curriculum has afforded me an opportunity to develop my skills in pursuing independent research.  As part of a seminar that I delivered on “An Intelligent WEB-BASED Voice ChatBot for Intelligent Education System (INES)”, I was required to understand Natural Language Processing, Pattern Recognition and Neural Networks. I delved deeper into the microcosm of AI and mastered the different approaches in which Intelligence is embedded in computer programs. Reading various IEEE journals and international conference papers and appreciate the work carried on by researchers has ignited a spark in me to pursue my own independent research at the graduate level.

For my final year project, I am working on a project “Computer Operation using hand gestures” using open-source technologies like OpenCV, Libre Office and Office Beans. The idea of selecting this project struck me when I was giving the seminar mentioned above. We were using a wireless remote for the slideshow and suddenly its batteries went dead in the middle of the presentation. So, I had to request my colleague to change the slides manually.  It was then, that I decided that we should experiment with gestures when we have an integrated webcam available in every laptop today. The project aims at operating all computer operations from a distance using hand gestures so that the use of external accessories like mouse, keyboard etc. will be eliminated. We are currently working on this project under the guidance of our Head of Department. Working on this project has reaffirmed by desire to pursue a graduate degree in ubiquitous computing.

Throughout my career, I have tried to acquire knowledge about various fields of Computer Science, with a strong focus in the fields of Ambient Intelligence and Seamless Computing. As quoted by Steve Jobs, “We’re here to put a dent in the universe. Otherwise why else even be here?” The goal of my life is to make significant contributions to the computing industry with cutting edge and innovative ideas and change the way humans perceive and use computers. My ambition is to be involved in research work and later pursue a PhD course. In order to achieve this, the Masters of Science course in Indiana University Bloomington will be an ideal launch pad for me. My interest lies in learning subjects such as ‘Software Multiagent Systems’ and ‘Introduction to Intelligent Agents Using Science Fiction’. It would be an honor to conduct research under professors like Prof. ___________ and Prof. ___________ at Indiana University and work with the ‘TEAMCORE’ research group and the ‘Agents and Multi-Agents’ lab. It will be a great privilege to make a significant contribution to the ongoing research projects at IUB such as “Learning Agents and Activity Detection” and “Planning and Coordination for Multiagent Teams”.

I look forward to graduate school to further mould my personality by taking part in student-centric activities and continue with my extra-curricular involvement at IUB. Joining various groups like the “___________” and “__________” will help me to share my knowledge and experiences with other students of the university.

I am sure the time spent at Indiana University Bloomington would be an enriching experience and hope that I am provided with an opportunity to satiate my appetite for knowledge and zeal for continuous learning at this esteemed institution.
